palmsprings Posted May 12, 2005 Author Posted May 12, 2005 Follow Up Hello, I wanted to follow up on this as it has been about six months and still no action (perhaps because this section of DMOZ is looking for an editor). Any chance someone will look at it in the near future?
Meta hutcheson Posted May 12, 2005 Meta Posted May 12, 2005 Still waiting there. There is always a chance: we just never know what it is ... well, except that directories are less likely to be reviewed quickly. The site will be reviewed on its merits, compared to the BEST other directories we can find. Therefore, of all kinds of sites that CAN be listed, probably directories are the least likely actually TO be listed (probably well down in the single-digit percent range.) The general advice for directories is: if you can't make the site obviously the most content-rich in the topic, plan on other promotional venues. (That's always the right advice, even for non-directory sites.)
palmsprings Posted May 14, 2005 Author Posted May 14, 2005 The Site Thanks for the update. It's actually not a directory site. We rent vacation condos in Palm Springs which is why the website was submitted to this section of DMOZ. The Guide section is there for our clients to find the best of things to do while in Palm Springs (of course anyone can use the Guide section which is always up to date) but it's not the primary basis of the site. (Again, we provide condo vacation rentals in Palm Springs.)
Editall/Catmv arubin Posted May 14, 2005 Editall/Catmv Posted May 14, 2005 hutcheson has a point. It's not really clear what your focus is. I spent a few minutes searching the site (actually not in response to this post -- it was a while ago), and it looks like you're renting condos in one complex, the Plaza Villas complex. The rest of the site is a directory of sorts, and hutcheson is right about how likely a directory is to be listed. If you made in more clear that your focus is the condo rental, that might make it easier for the reviewing editor, and possibly more helpful to the user.
Meta hutcheson Posted May 14, 2005 Meta Posted May 14, 2005 I understand your problem. A friend of mine has a website (timeshare rental). I told him it wasn't eligible for ODP listing, but suggested adding some information about what someone could do in the immediate area -- to attract hits. Well, he did, but the next iteration of the site had your current problem. Redesign #3 was a lot better, and worked for him. Make it absolutely clear -- main frame, front page -- what you're really doing (offering a unique property for rent). The rest of the site can be surfer bait.
