Meta hutcheson Posted May 9, 2002 Meta Posted May 9, 2002 A "deep link" is a URL that doesn't point to the "home page" of a site -- usually, this means contains something more than just a domain name [optionally followed by "index.htm" or the like.] It "addresses some page deep inside the site", not its "main entry point." A site that has pages (or subdirectories) with information on several different topics might have each such page or subdirectory listed separately (and directly) under several different categories. This would be "deeplinking". The guidelines say "deep linking is the exception" -- that is, the deep links in a category should be consistently of significantly higher value (quality of content) than the minimum required for a site listed in the same category. In practice, this means that certain kinds of sites (e.g. online retail sites) are "basically never" deeplinked, while others (e.g., encyclopedias, newspapers, large "conglomerate" corporations, newsgroups or etext archives, universities) are "frequently" deeplinked.

I had just received an email this morning from a client who has a one page web on our site and wrote that he had submitted the page to his regional/local category of the ODP. He asked if it would be accepted since this is the "only" web presence they have. I emailed back that I wasn't sure /images/icons/frown.gif Maybe one of the editors could answer this for me? The site/page is at: http://www.the-home-improvement-web.com/web-pages/mmoore/MMooreConstruction.htm and the category they submitted to is http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Ohio/Localities/M/Munroe_Falls/Business_and_Economy/ I did include in my reply that they should email me some more content/text to place on the page. Although it is not by any means official policy, some editors use the 'business card/classified ad' idea, whereby they will only list sites that contain more information than the average business card or classified ad. While that does cover most sites, it rules out those that merely consist of a photo, logo, slogan and contacts. Submitting it to the Ohio category was a good move, as these sorts of sites generally only get listed in Regional/. But adding some more content would do it no harm.

Guest Posted May 12, 2002 Posted May 12, 2002 Just so people don't get the idea that the site is being listed as a result of the posting here, I just did a check and found that the Ohio Localities editors are keeping on top of submissions state wide. That's one of the advantages of locality listing, there is much more likely to be an editor or two looking at localities often. They don't get swamped as the bigger cats do, and therefore quite often get listed quicker. Submitting with good descriptions helps too. /images/icons/smile.gif
dstanovic Posted May 12, 2002 Posted May 12, 2002 gimmster, I agree completely. I have seen sites listed very quickly when submitting to the correct regional/local category. I believe many of the Regional->Localities editors can stay on top of things a lot easier and do not have near the spam factor to wade through. It also lessens the degree of the question "Does this site belong here or some other category". In my previous post I was thanking "all" editors and these forums which have helped many people such as myself. I really have a great deal of respect for all of you after volunteering for some time myself in the Compuserve forums for a leading notebook manufacturer. My 2-cents, Dave S.
