I cannot determine if http://dmoz.org.il/ is an official site or not.

If it is, then you have a problem with links being added by someone (bottom of each page) to what I assume is their own site

I appreciate there are a number of rogue copies that have nothing to do with DMOZ. I have no idea if this is the real thing or not

If it is not official, how many official copies are there?

I'ts legitimate and maintained by ODP editors - however it will not be as up to date as dmoz.org.

If you take the time to look carefully you will find that all places where sites are added link back to dmoz.org to do the actual site submissions.

As you have " Nigritude Ultramarine" as your location, you of all people should realise what is going on there then with those bottom links :-)

(Readers that do not recognise "Nigritude Ultramarine" could do a check)

It is basically irrelevant who owns the site, provided the copy of the ODP data presented complies with the licence conditions, the owner is free to add links as they wish, they may add data, present only a subset of the data, or rearrange the data (google does that by ordering the directory by pagerank).

Rogue copies from our perspective are those that do not comply with the license agreement.

dmoz.org.il

Hi!

I am the editor of World/Hebrew.

( Curlie - World: Hebrew )

As a service to the Hebrew speaking community, Michael from 2find, Daniel Nuriyev and myslef maintain a mirror site for the Hebrew category under www.dmoz.org.il .

This mirror was launched more than 2 years ago, and had the 2find link since than.

( Wayback Machine )

The main reason for this mirror was problems displaying Hebrew correctly on dmoz.org main site. (BTW - Since than Hebrew is displayed much better, using unicode, on dmoz.org)

I would like to thank again Michael from 2find for hosting this mirror site.

As told above, of course the site is not affiliated with dmoz.org, curlie.org, AOL or anyone else.

Any questions?

You ask for questions, so -

Were you aware that the site appears to have been used as part of the "Latur Motor" competition - a sort of latter day "Nigritude Ultramarine"?

The reason I asked the question in the first place was that, having come across the links, I was interested to know if they were "official" or not. The links have been to "Latur Motor" pages at some point

I am assured from this thread that the site is not an official DMOZ site (though to the browser it is impossible to know).

I was not wishing to get involved in some private feud going on between Israeli SEO companies (which I am sure you have seen on a number of forums), but trying to clarify what was an official site
