Decius Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 Please Note: I submitted these sites ranging from 4-2 months ago, so I am not 100% sure the categories I submitted to are the same I list here. 1) http://www.undergrounds.com Submitted to: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/Directories/ When: Approximately 3-5 months ago Status: No feedback on submission. Site already exists in Dmoz, but in an incorrect area (site has been changed) 2) http://www.captaincynic.com Submitted to: http://dmoz.org/Society/Philosophy/Chats_and_Forums/ When: Approximately 3-5 months ago Status: No feedback on submission. Site already exists in Dmoz, but in an incorrect area (site has been changed) 3) http://www.perfectpeople.net Submitted to: http://dmoz.org/Arts/Celebrities/Image_Galleries/Non-Gender_Specific/ When: Approximately 3-5 months ago Status: No feedback on submission. Site does not exist in directory. 4) http://www.gnomenetwork.com Submitted to: http://dmoz.org/Society/People/Personal_Homepages/ When: Approximately 3-5 months ago Status: No feedback on submission. Site does not exist in directory. 5) http://www.selit.net Submitted to: http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Classifieds/Free_Classifieds/ When: Approximately 3-5 months ago Status: No feedback on submission. Site does not exist in directory. 6) http://www.learmedia.ca Submitted to: http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Entertainment/Recordings/Video/Videotape/Special_Interest/ When: Approximately 3-5 months ago Status: No feedback on submission. Site does not exist in directory. I deeply appreciate any feedback on the above sites as I have been waiting very patiently for some sign of them being added, but to no avail. Decius.
motsa Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 1) I didn't see www.undergrounds.com in the queue for Computers/Internet/Searching/Directories but the listing that was under Image Galleries has been moved to unreviewed under Directories. It's waiting with over 300 other sites and it's likely going to be quite a while before it's reviewed.
motsa Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 2) www.captaincynic.com is currently listed in Society/Philosophy/Humor -- is that where you're saying it is miscategorized? You say here it belongs under Society/Philosophy/Chats_and_Forums but your update request in the Humor category states you'd like it moved to Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Message_Boards. Which is it? Personally, I see it as just a subsite of undergrounds.com (UGN network) and therefore not appropriate to list on its own but it's in the queue (along with over 500 sites) of Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Message_Boards anyway. It's likely going to be quite awhile before it gets reviewed.
motsa Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 3) www.perfectpeople.net shows that it was only submitted a month ago (to the day) so I'm guessing you resubmitted at least once. It's there in the queue with under 100 sites. Don't know how long it'll take.
motsa Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 4) www.gnomenetwork.com -- submitted to Society/People/Personal_Homepages? I don't know where you actually submitted it but it isn't waiting in Society/People/Personal_Homepages or in Society/People/Personal_Homepages/G . What exactly is it? It looks like a directory of personal profiles, not personal homepages and it definitely isn't a homepage on its own. It is also, like all the other sites you're asking about, firmly meshed with undergrounds.com's content. This site especially is not listable on it's own so I wouldn't bother resubmitting.
motsa Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 5) www.selit.net is not waiting in Shopping/Classifieds/Free_Classifieds. I don't know where you submitted it but it wasn't there.
Decius Posted March 22, 2003 Author Posted March 22, 2003 Hi Motsa, I don't really see how any of the sites listed are in any way affiliated with Undergrounds.com except for them being in the same network. Undergrounds.com is a web directory, whereas the rest of the sites are completely unrelated to that. CaptainCynic is to be in > Society/Philosophy/Chats_and_Forums Gnome Network is to be in > Society/People/Personal_Homepages Also, the Gnome Network has a complete online GUI for users to personalize their pages any way they want, and they may create any number of them themselves. I suppose I just have to re-submit it if it isn't even in queue. Thank you for moving Undergrounds.com for me. If you could move captain cynic that would be great. I look forward to hearing about the results of the remaining 2 sites.
motsa Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 6) www.learmedia.ca is not waiting in Shopping/Entertainment/Recordings/Video/Videotape/Special_Interest . However I can tell now that you must have gotten the IP error message (probably for all your submissions) that states that your IP address couldn't be determined and that the submission was being routed to a holding area. This one is currently waiting for someone to shift it out of the Shopping holding pen into the correct queue.
Decius Posted March 22, 2003 Author Posted March 22, 2003 Hi Motsa, I don't understand what you mean about Learmedia.ca and the IP issue. Why is it in a holding pen? And are you able to move it out of that?
motsa Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 CaptainCynic is to be in > Society/Philosophy/Chats_and_Forums Since there are more than just philosophy forums on the site, it isn't appropriate there. It's waiting in the only place it could be listed. Gnome Network is to be in > Society/People/Personal_Homepages Also, the Gnome Network has a complete online GUI for users to personalize their pages any way they want, and they may create any number of them themselves. I suppose I just have to re-submit it if it isn't even in queue.1. They're not really personal homepages. They're one-page profile pages of UGN members -- if users can create more than one page, I couldn't find any. 2. In order to create a profile, one must first be registered with undergrounds.com. That makes them very intertwined and thus one becomes a subsite of the other. Feel free to resubmit. It's a gigantic queue, though (several hundred sites) so it's likely to be a long time before it gets properly reviewed by someone.
motsa Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 I don't understand what you mean about Learmedia.ca and the IP issue. Why is it in a holding pen? And are you able to move it out of that? You must have gotten an error message when you tried to submit the site. The error message would have said that it couldn't determine your IP address and that as a result the site was getting routing to a holding pen to be verified and then forwarded to the correct queue. You may have gotten the error for several of your submissions since only 1 of the 6 actually made it through to the cat you said you submitted to. No, I won't move it out -- I avoid the holding pens because they are too large for my computer to load. It will get moved out eventually.
Decius Posted March 22, 2003 Author Posted March 22, 2003 Thanks for the help Motsa. I have re-submitted Selit.net. I still think that CaptainCynic should definitely belong in the philosophy/chat area since it also has philosphical articles, and many of the forums relate to philosophy even if not literally.
ishtar Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 http://www.gnomenetwork.com will not be listed under Personal_Homepages. Please view the FAQ.
Decius Posted March 22, 2003 Author Posted March 22, 2003 In retrospect I appologize... I did not realize it did not include listings of personal homepages. Would it relate moreso to blogs? I've been racking my brain trying to figure out where it should go. I'll keep looking I guess. thanks.
Decius Posted April 4, 2003 Author Posted April 4, 2003 http://www.learmedia.ca I submitted to: http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Entertainment/Recordings/Video/Videotape/Special_Interest I was told it might be in a "holding" pen of some sort. I submitted this site in late December and received no errors during submission. If I could get someone to look into it and finally put it in the category that would be great.
Meta kokopeli Posted April 4, 2003 Meta Posted April 4, 2003 Re: http://www.learmedia.ca Your site is not waiting in that category. It appears it was caught by the filter and is in the process of being moved to the appropriate category. There is no need to resubmit, it should be moved shortly.
motsa Posted April 4, 2003 Posted April 4, 2003 Re: http://www.learmedia.ca See original discussion in original thread.
Decius Posted April 4, 2003 Author Posted April 4, 2003 Thanks koko Thanks Koko... that is pretty much the same response I got originally. I was wondering if you could explain to me why it may have been filtered? I want to prevent this from occurring again so I wanted to get as much info about this problem as I could. Thanks. PS: My submission went fine, so the IP problem I heard about doesn't affect this submission, I don't think.
Meta kokopeli Posted April 4, 2003 Meta Posted April 4, 2003 Re: Thanks koko I have very limited understanding on this, all I know is what I've read in posts by others--so I could be incorrect in some of what I am going to say (any other editor, please feel free to jump in). ODP is spammed with thousands of sites daily, I imagine this is much like the spam that would go to a hotmail box. I picture this as get rich quick schemes being sent to say Shopping/Gifts/Gift_Baskets for example. If you have a hotmail account, however, you will notice that 95% of the time it filters out the correct spam. However, you can look into that spam box and occasionally you'll find an email that you actually wanted that is legit but ended up there by mistake. I imagine this is one of these cases. There are around 10 other sites waiting in that category right now, likely the editor will sort by date. It should be sent there soon, and the plus side is that the original date stays there on your original submission. I can see by the editor notes that they were working on it, so it should be sent there soon.
Meta kokopeli Posted April 4, 2003 Meta Posted April 4, 2003 Re: Thanks koko Yikes, just noticed motsa caught what I didn't--from now please us the other thread listed above
