freemason Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I have a daily weblog (new) that answers a question about cabling for networks (phone, television, security, and computer) each day. (Visiting the site probably isn't necessary to answer this question, but if you'd like to, here's the link: http://fourpair.blogspot.com) I submitted it to this category: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Weblogs/Technology/ But now I'm thinking that that may have been a mistake. Perhaps it should have gone here: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Hardware/Cables/FAQs,_Help,_and_Tutorials/ My question: Do all blogs need to be submitted to a Weblogs category or is the blog format acceptable for sites in other categories? EDIT: Though it's irrelevant to the question, I just realized that I made this post under my personal DMOZ account that I use to submit other people's sites that I think are neat instead of the one I use at work to submit my own sites. So you won't be able to find this submission under my name. Sorry if that confused anyone.
freemason Posted March 4, 2005 Author Posted March 4, 2005 I didn't know it was okay to do that. Thanks for the quick answer.
Meta andysands Posted March 4, 2005 Meta Posted March 4, 2005 It is okay if an editor tells you its okay :-) It's not otherwise.
Philip25 Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 Hi, I have a similar issue. I submitted my site, http://www.cellphonenews.net to http://dmoz.org/Home/Consumer_Information/Electronics/Communications/Mobile/ where it awaits to be evaluated. Can I also submit to http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Weblogs/Technology/ ? If so, do I have to tell anyone so I don't get penalized or do I just make the suggestion in the second category? Thanks!
motsa Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Weblogs/Technology/ would generally be for blogs with fairly broad coverage of the world of technology -- blogs on a specific topic (like yours and IMO freemason's) would generally get listed in that specific topic, not in http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Weblogs/Technology/ (and not in both). I would leave it at the submission you've already made.
BetaCandy Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 I'm curious about this, too. I have a site ( http://thehathorlegacy.info ) which uses blog software, but I consider it a frequently updated collection of articles, rather than a blog. In my mind, "blog" means it chronicles something, which my site does not. The vast majority of the articles are about works at least several years old, as I like to have perspective before offering criticism. I submitted the site to http://dmoz.org/Arts/Movies/Theory_and_Criticism/Feminist/ because that was the tightest match, in my opinion. Now I'm wondering if I should have submitted it to http://dmoz.org/Arts/Entertainment/Weblogs/ instead. I just felt that was a very general category for such a niche site. Fortunately, if an editor feels I've chosen the wrong category, s/he will simply forward the submission to the appropriate category, which I appreciate. But to save the editors that extra step in the future, I'd like to know: 1) What does DMOZ consider a blog? Absolutely any site using blog software? Or just those sites that chronicle something? Or personal blogs? 2) If it fits DMOZ's description of a blog, should we submit it to a blog category, even if there's a more relevant category for regular sites?
Editall/Catmv arubin Posted July 26, 2005 Editall/Catmv Posted July 26, 2005 IMHO, although I don't edit in any of the categories your site would go in (if described correctly), I think you suggested it to the correct category. We generally believe that the substance of the site is more important than the form. Perhaps an editor who edits in http://dmoz.org/Arts/Movies/Theory_and_Criticism/ might comment?
