erkin Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 Application status Hi, I applied for becoming an editor of the http://www.dmoz.org/World/T%c3%bcrk%c3%a7e/Bilgisayar/Yaz%c4%b1l%c4%b1m/%c4%b0nternet/ section of the Open Directory. Today i received an email telling; either the section i applied for is a large section for a new editor, or the section i applied for already has enough editors. As you can see http://www.dmoz.org/World/T%c3%bcrk%c3%a7e/Bilgisayar/Yaz%c4%b1l%c4%b1m/%c4%b0nternet/ is a really small section which is suitable for a beginner editor, and also the section has no active editors. As i really want to be an active part of the ODP, i surely will apply again. But as i was not given any real information about the reasons of my application's being denied by the editor who has reviewed my application, i thought it will be good to ask about this here. Thank you for your interest. Erkin.
motsa Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 Actually, no, you applied for http://dmoz.org/World/T%c3%bcrk%c3%a7e/Bilgisayar/Yaz%c4%b1l%c4%b1m/ which is too large.
erkin Posted March 7, 2005 Author Posted March 7, 2005 Just as an information to the followers. My application to http://dmoz.org/World/T%c3%bcrk%c3%a7e/Bilgisayar/Yaz%c4%b1l%c4%b1m/%c4%b0nternet/ category of the ODP is denied. I think that; none of the common errors listed in guidelines is present in my application form. Also no subjective information is given, at the reply mail, about the reasons to the denial of my application.
Meta pvgool Posted March 7, 2005 Meta Posted March 7, 2005 With 127 sites already listed in that category it is probably seen as to big for a new editor. Try to apply for a category with arond 50 sites listed (including all subcategories). I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
erkin Posted March 7, 2005 Author Posted March 7, 2005 Hi pvgool, Actually i applied for http://dmoz.org/World/T%c3%bcrk%c3%a7e/Bilgisayar/Yaz%c4%b1l%c4%b1m/%c4%b0nternet/ which only has 5 sites listed, and no active editor.
donaldb Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 Make sure that you read through the [thread=1289]FAQ and General Advice[/thread] thread if you're going to apply again. P.S. Make sure that the sites that you are submitting as examples are not already listed appropriately in the ODP. This is something that I see quite often. Unfortunately the search sometimes doesn't show them, but make sure that you only search by domain name with no http://www. at the beginning.
erkin Posted March 7, 2005 Author Posted March 7, 2005 Hi donaldb, I re-read the FAQ and applied to a different category with 10 sites listed, and no active editor this time. There are sites listed in more then one category. What if i submit a site which, in my opinion, is also suitable for the category i applied for and also listed in a different category of the OD? Are applications simply getting denied if one of the submitted sites is already listed in a different category of the Open Directory? Thank you.
jimnoble Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 It's best if you select ones which aren't already listed. If you can't find any, it's probable that the category isn't suitable for a trainee anyway.
erkin Posted March 7, 2005 Author Posted March 7, 2005 Thank you, Jimnoble. Than, it is my answer. In my previous two applications, i submitted a site which fits in the category i am applying for, but also listed in a different category of the Open Directory. Seems like it was all about this.
erkin Posted March 21, 2005 Author Posted March 21, 2005 Hello, again. I am writing to ask about the status of my application. Below is the required information: i. The category i applied to. ii. erkin. iii. March 7th, 2005.
erkin Posted April 3, 2005 Author Posted April 3, 2005 Hi, again. I will be grateful, if you can give information about the status of my application. i. The category i applied to. ii. erkin. iii. March 7th, 2005.
donaldb Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 Still waiting. It sometimes takes a bit longer for applications in World categories as there are less of us who can read the language. Just be patient and someone will get to it
erkin Posted April 4, 2005 Author Posted April 4, 2005 Thank you for the information. I applied using the same language with the application form, and for this reason it seems like i will have to wait 2 more months before getting my application reviewed. I am multilingual. If you think it will be better, i may (re)apply with a more commonly used language like English.
Guest gimmster Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 The application needs to be in the language which you will edit in. For http://www.dmoz.org/World/T%c3%bcrk%c3%a7e/Bilgisayar/Yaz%c4%b1l%c4%b1m/Ticari/ it needs to be in Turkish, for the equivalent English language category http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Business/ that would be English, but that is too big a category for a trainee editor. :tree:
