Guest njohnson Posted April 2, 2003 Posted April 2, 2003 I was told earlier this month when I applied to become an editor that the "category that is currently under revision. We are not accepting new editors for categories undergoing change." I don't recall exactly which category I applied for, but it was one of the categories that is connected to international long distance and/or calling cards. Do you know if this is still the case? I was told that there are at least 300 sites waiting for review for the following category: http://www.dmoz.org/Business/Telecommunications/Communications_Providers/Phone_Card_Distributors/ and I would like to help out if at all possible. I could start in the following category: http://www.dmoz.org/Business/Telecommunications/Communications_Providers/Long_Distance_Calling/International/ which currently has only 23 listing. I know that new editors usually start in smaller categories. --Nick
Meta windharp Posted April 4, 2003 Meta Posted April 4, 2003 Since it looks like no Metaeditor wants to answer this one, I'll give it a try. I'm no metaeditor and thatfor not directly involved in processing new esitor applications. You are right that the category is not to large, but keep in mind that a lot of sites are waiting for review. I processed some of them, trying to reduce the number so that new applications could be acceted easier. In that process I have seen that most of the submissions are spam. In fact I was only able to delete about 20% of the waiting sites and unable to list a single site of those I viewed. I assume, that the fact that a lot of sites are waiting (category size counts as "published sites+unreviewed sites" for an application) and the percentage of spam makes metaeditors think twice about accepting new editors for that category. Guest njohnson Posted April 4, 2003 Posted April 4, 2003 Thank you for your reply. While you were looking through the sites waiting for review did you happen to see our site? <url removed> As you may have seen I have been attempting to get it in to the directory somewhere for almost 6 months now. (Sorry, I'm anxious to get our site listed. I'm sure you get people asking all the time.) I realize that there are a lot of sites waiting for review, that's why I wanted to get started as an editor. --Nick
Meta windharp Posted April 4, 2003 Meta Posted April 4, 2003 I have seen that it is waiting, but did not process it. I choose to remove some spam first. Curlie Meta/kMeta Editor windharp
Guest njohnson Posted April 7, 2003 Posted April 7, 2003 I decided to apply to a smaller local category. I just applied for: https://dmoztools.net/Regional/North_America/United_States/California/Localities/I/Irvine/Business_and_Economy/Internet/ I live in Irvine and figured that this might be a good way to get my feet wet as an editor. --Nick
Guest njohnson Posted April 14, 2003 Posted April 14, 2003 Just thought I'd let you know that I was approved for the small category that I applied for. I have cleaned this up and now I want more. I tried applying for the category above this, but was turned down since I was so new. I am now looking at going for another category in the Irvine/Business... category. Do you think it is still too early to ask for more? I just want to help as much as I can.
samiam Posted April 14, 2003 Posted April 14, 2003 Re: http://www.dmoz.org/Business/Telecommunication Welcome! Questions of this sort can probably be best addressed in the internal editor forum, linked from your editor dashboard. The New Editors' forum may be a good starting place! -Sam http://dmoz.org/profiles/samiam.html
