How to locate Categories that need an Editor

Is there a Query or search string I can enter that will return all categories that are "editorless"

TIA

Hi hemsell,

I would suggest you consider your hobbies and interests, and start with a category in one of those areas. Find a cat with a low nuber of sites (new editor will be accepted to a large category) and apply.

If you look at your hobbies or recreational interests when choosing, it is more enjoyable finding, adding, and editing sites. As you gain experience you may then want to apply to a wider variety of categories.

Good luck and find a niche you'll enjoy most!

(ADDED) I noticed I didn't answer your question. No, there is no search for that but having an editor listed does not disqualify additional editors.

The one I am intersted in is Top: Computers: Software: Operating Systems: Windows: FAQs, Help, and Tutorials: Technical Support and Troubleshooting

From what I have been reading it is fairly difficult to get accepted for a category like that (would seem to me upper level)

However that is really my only interest :/images/dmoz/purplegrin.gif

I work at a Help Desk, Stay on the computer all day when not at work, and Answer questions in the Microsoft forums.

Bearing that in mind what would be a good caegory to "get into"

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm..

that brings up a point.

Would it be possible perhaps to do a scan on which lower cats have the highest percentage of unreviewed, and post "help wanted" notices here?

Might be a way to get some new people interested.

Just in case:

Unlike some other directories, ODP does allow multiple editors in a category. The question (for metas reviewing your application) is not "is this real estate already staked out?" but "does this applicant have something to offer here?" If you can find three good, relevant websites not already listed, and you think you might be able to find a dozen more within the next 6 months, then you have something to offer! And the presence of one, two, or three current editors will not even slow your application down. (Remember, one or more of those editors might be almost completely dormant, or very busy in other categories anyway!)

So: How to locate categories that need YOU as editor? ANY subject for which you know a dozen websites not already listed, DESPERATELY needs YOU. Any subject for which you know three websites not already listed, probably will be considered to be needing YOU.

I can tell you that the categories needing the most help are (in order)

1. Business

2. Computers

3. Shopping

4. Recreation

5. Arts

6. Society

7. Games

The top 3 are by FAR in the most need of help.

Computers/Shopping seems to be in need of an editor, and at 44 sites is something a newbie might be able to get; however, I'm not sure if "Shopping" categories are ever given to newbies...

Within Computers/, the following seem to need the most help:

  • [*]Companies

[*]Consultants

[*]Intranet

[*]Shopping

[/list:u]In Business:

  • [*]E-Commerce

[*]International Business and Trade

[*]Import and Export

[*]Training and Schools

[*]Small Business

[/list:u]

  • 3 weeks later...

As a general rule, the category that most needs YOU as an editor is the one that you are itching to build. If you know about the subject, are aware of some sites that are missing from the dmoz directory, and see other needed improvements in the category, THAT is the category that needs YOU.

Hint: After you find the perfect category but before applying, do search the dmoz.org directory for the sites you would like to add. You might discover another category that more closely matches your interests.
