andysg Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 Dear all, Recently I submitted an editor application for the category of Top: Games: Gambling: Sports: Tipping and Handicapping: Soccer. Username: andysg The following day, I received an email on the disapproval. Therefore, I believe there are some issues that need to be address in order for the application to go through. I would really appreciate if you can shed some light and advice. Thank you so much.
riz Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 Certainly, these issues must be addressed. By you, my friend. The unfortunate email should have mentioned the possible reasons for this rejection. Most likely, the category is just too big for a new editor to mess around with. Not that any one is questioning you editorial skills.
cgispy Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 No one here will be able to tell you why your application was declined. You should have received a list of possible reasons it was declined, or a message from the Meta who looked at your application stating a particular reason. Other than that, there is nothing anyone here can do for you.
jimnoble Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 Please read the email declining your application again and with more care.
andysg Posted October 22, 2005 Author Posted October 22, 2005 Thank you Dear all, I really appreciate the advice I have received after posting my thread shortly. I've resubmitted the application after seriously reviewing the comments. This time, I believe I have addressed the issue raised by the reviewer and I hope to be given the opportunity to help at ODP. Thank you all for the kind enlightment.
andysg Posted October 22, 2005 Author Posted October 22, 2005 Dear all, Somehow, my application was rejected again. This time, I couldn't really understand the reason given. 1) Too many spelling and capitalisation errors. I have thoroughly checked the application and did not notice any minor or major errors on the spellings nor capitalisation. Could you please tell me which sections did it occur? 2) It also looks bad that you ignored our submission guidelines at http://dmoz.org/add.html. That you think they both belong in this categrory proves they are related. I don't understand this reasoning. Please advise further.
Meta pvgool Posted October 22, 2005 Meta Posted October 22, 2005 We don't have access to information about applications and the few of us that do have access are not allowed to discuss individual applications. So we can only give you general answers. From what you wrote my guess is that you recieved a specific answer added to the list of common mistakes. I can't judge about spelling. But from the second answer my conclusion is that you included 2 sites that are related to each other (same company / person). According to our guidelines only 1 can be listed. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
jimnoble Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 did not notice any minor or major errors on the spellings nor capitalisationPresumably the evaluating meta did. Had you thought of using a spell checker? Did you read http://dmoz.org/add.html? It says Do not submit URLs that contain only the same or similar content as other sites you may have listed in the directory. Sites with overlapping and repetitive content are not helpful to users of the directory. Multiple submissions of the same or related sites may result in the exclusion and/or deletion of those and all affiliated sites. The evaluating meta is claiming that you ignored it.

I will use the spell checker from the Microsoft Word software in my next application to ensure the general spellings and grammars are corrected. Secondly, I wish to highlight and emphasize that the 2 sites mentioned that offering different content (predictions). There is no reason I will submit the two same ones. May I request that the evaluating meta please have a good looks at the 2 sites content (predictions)?
riz Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 Since I have been asked to stop pretending to be an editor by pvgool in a private message, I must retract my last suggestion, for what ever it was worth. Just follow what you are being told by the authorities to the tee. It will help you immensely in achieving your goal.
Meta pvgool Posted October 22, 2005 Meta Posted October 22, 2005 Well that wasn't exactly how I wrote my message. But everybody must remember that although non-editors can give correct answers they can not know anything that is happening internaly in DMOZ and as such could lack some knowledge to give a complete and correct answer. For the same reason I will not answer some questions, even as an editor I don't know everything. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
andysg Posted October 22, 2005 Author Posted October 22, 2005 hi pvgool and riz, I appreciate both of your feedback. I believe your have my interest at heart and therefore giving some thoughts that could help me one way or another. Regardless you are editor or not, I thank you for the replies. I'll be resubmitting an application shortly after listening to all comments. Wish me good luck!
Meta pvgool Posted October 22, 2005 Meta Posted October 22, 2005 I'll be resubmitting an application shortly after listening to all comments. Wish me good luck! A little secret :secret: it seems luck isn't involved in an editor application. But for what it is worth: good luck :gift: I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
andysg Posted October 26, 2005 Author Posted October 26, 2005 Good morning to all, May I request to have a status check on my application? Thanks for the trouble. Appreciate it.
jimnoble Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 Username? Clickable category link? Date submitted? Is that more than 2 weeks ago?
motsa Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 If you're talking about the application you said you'd be submitting up in item #12 on Oct 22, you're way too early for a status check.
andysg Posted October 29, 2005 Author Posted October 29, 2005 Hi all, Today I received an email from ODP regarding my application. >>Although we would like you to join us as a volunteer editor, you have >>chosen a category that is already well represented, or is broader than >>we typically assign to a new editor. However, there are no editors listed in the directory that I am applying for: Top: Games: Gambling: Sports: Tipping and Handicapping: Soccer In addition, there were very very few websites listings on that category. Therefore, I am very puzzled why it says there are many editors for that category. Could someone please advise? Thanks.
jimnoble Posted October 29, 2005 Posted October 29, 2005 Had you thought of reading the entire email? The reviewer comments seem pretty clear to me. This category, with its much bigger pool of URLs awaiting review, is too large for a trainee. If you try again, please select one of up to around 50 listings. Our editor guidelines should help you to write acceptable titles and descriptions. You're still making spelling errors (bettors)
andysg Posted October 29, 2005 Author Posted October 29, 2005 Hi jim, Thanks for your prompt response. 1) I read the email a few times. But I do not really get it. As you can see the category I am applying for "Top: Games: Gambling: Sports: Tipping and Handicapping: Soccer" has only 20 websites listed. I would like to be an editor here to add more interesting soccer sites to this category so there would not just be 20 only. 2) At http://www.dmoz.org/Games/Gambling/Sports/Tipping_and_Handicapping/Soccer/, I did not find any editors listed at the bottom of the page. Therefore, I presume DMOZ is lacking editors here. Am I correct?
dogbows Posted October 29, 2005 Posted October 29, 2005 Try reading it one more time, Andy, especially the first sentence: "This category, with its much bigger pool of URLs awaiting review, is too large for a trainee."
andysg Posted October 29, 2005 Author Posted October 29, 2005 Hi dogbows, Thanks for your reply. What I understood from the first sentence is that there are many URLs submitted into this category, and it would be difficult for a new editor to handle? However, why is there only 20 sites listed? If there is many submissions to this category then I feel that there is more reason for me to volunteer. I believe I am up to the task if given the opportunity.
Meta pvgool Posted October 29, 2005 Meta Posted October 29, 2005 Maybe because most gambling categories attract enormous amounts of spam. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
andysg Posted October 29, 2005 Author Posted October 29, 2005 I have a passion in soccer and have a fair knowledge in this game. I would love to dedicate time to manage http://www.dmoz.org/Games/Gambling/Sports/Tipping_and_Handicapping/Soccer/. >This category, with its much bigger pool of URLs awaiting review Seriously, I would be more than happy to review the soccer websites one by one as I can afford to be online everyday. I have seen hundreds of related websites and wouldn't mind finding out more. I know ODP need more editors to reduce the work, that is also the reason I am here to help out.
motsa Posted October 29, 2005 Posted October 29, 2005 Categories that get a lot of spam require someone with more experience dealing with the spam to edit them. have a passion in soccer and have a fair knowledge in this game. I would love to dedicate time to manage http://www.dmoz.org/Games/Gambling/...capping/Soccer/. I don't quite understand how a love for a sport translates into wanting to edit a gambling category for the sport. That sounds more like "I like betting on soccer" than "I have a passion for soccer". Not saying that's what you mean but that is just how it looks to me (and I say that having not seen any of your applications).
Meta pvgool Posted October 29, 2005 Meta Posted October 29, 2005 I have a passion in soccer and have a fair knowledge in this game. In that case I advise to find a small category within http://dmoz.org/Sports/Soccer/ I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
