whitelaceangels Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 Hi. I applied to become an editor of the category Shopping-Jewelry-Estate and Collectible. I received an email stating that the category already had an editor, and to apply again to another category. If there was an editor of this category, would the name be listed anywhere? Because I could not find an editor of that category, and at the bottom of the page, it says to become an editor of this category. Jean
motsa Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 What you probably got was the generic email that says "you have chosen a category that is already well represented, or is broader than we typically assign to a new editor. " The key part of that is usually the "is broader than we typically assign to a new editor." part.

" The key part of that is usually the "[b']is broader than we typically assign to a new editor[/b"]." part. I can't remember the exact wording, as I didn't save that email. But I could have sworn it said that they already had an editor. Are the editors of the categories listed somewhere? Because I could not find an editor for that category. Jean
motsa Posted November 13, 2005 Posted November 13, 2005 You probably misinterpreted the "you have chosen a category that is already well represented" part as meaning that there was already an editor there. Pick a smaller category.

Pick a smaller category. There were only 98 listings in Shopping-Jewelry-Estate and Collectible. To me that seems small already. Do you mean pick a smaller category than Shopping, or pick a smaller category than Estate and Collectible? Jean
spectregunner Posted November 13, 2005 Posted November 13, 2005 Pick a smaller category than Shopping-Jewelry-Estate and Collectible. Shopping can be a tough place for new editors to begin, so pick a very small category (fewer than 50 listed istes) and that still may be too large, depending upon the category and the amount of spam that has been submitted.

Okay thanks. I'll look for a category with less than 50 sites listed. But I am still wondering if the editors are listed somewhere. I don't want to apply to a category that already has an editor. Editall/Catmv lmocr Posted November 13, 2005 Editall/Catmv Posted November 13, 2005 Named editors are listed at the bottom of the page - look at http://www.dmoz.com/Shopping/ for example. The last item on the page says Category Editors: xxx, xxx, xxx.
Meta hutcheson Posted November 13, 2005 Meta Posted November 13, 2005 >But I am still wondering if the editors are listed somewhere. I don't want to apply to a category that already has an editor. Sigh. Bad news: every category has hundreds of editors (that is, there are hundreds of editors who can edit in all categories.) So if that's what you're looking for, just assume you found it and go on. If you prefer to work alone, then ... by all means, set up your own website and work there alone. It's an honorable practice: most websites get started that way. But the ODP is a collaborative effort, which many people enjoy. And the way it is structured, multiple people can work on the same category. Of ALL the reasons that e-mail mentions, "too many editors for a category already" is the LEAST likely to be an issue. Don't worry about it, really.
