redline Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 Hi all, I had applied to become an editor on 11/30 with application key c8dd1900bfde65e7ddc3cba5ebe22471 and quickly received a decline. I knew the moment I submitted I had made a mistake as my speedy little finger clicked one category below the correct target category for the sample links I submitted. So it was w/o surprise I got a "thank you - but no thank you dear john" letter. However I repplied today app key 5ff09254eb3f78f4f078b040c7893a33 and even faster yet ... declined again despite writing thoughtful, articulate and accurate site descriptions for url's that are not in dmoz. I verified punctuation, grammer, spelling etc prior to submitting, and the category was 100% accurate for the links submitted. Also, the category only had 22 active listings which seems like the type of category you specify to start out in . I see you dont offer specific reasons for declinations, however could someone perhaps offer any alternative reasons the 2nd application was so quickly rejected provided the category is small and my sample sites & descriptions were concise, accurate and w/o any grammatical or spelling errors? Are there any other reasons that I may not be aware of, or if you could offer if it is the category that is somehow unsuitable for me? Category=> Top: Business: Transportation and Logistics: Moving Services: Directories Date: 11/30 & 12/1 Username: The same
Meta hutcheson Posted December 3, 2005 Meta Posted December 3, 2005 Isn't that a major spam target, or what? <added after looking at category>"or what" is NOT the right answer. No, I can't see us dumping a new editor into a category where blind-lead-generators are so prevalent: not only are they a problem all by themselves, but they strongly indicate an industry that is driven to unscrupulous promotional techniques in general -- not a good place for a new editor.
redline Posted December 3, 2005 Author Posted December 3, 2005 Hutcheson, Yes it is a target for spam. However the links I submitted the first time were incorrectly to the :directory: category. They were however some very useful sites that are consumer advocate and affairs groups which aid individuals in finding reputable service providers (most of which .gov sponsored and operated sites). In hindsite I suppose I would have been more correct in requesting a new category for that type of listing since none currently exists. The retry was to the same category with sites that were in the correct genre per category specs and have not current complaints available via *oogle, and Y! nor did they have any BBB complaints found anywhere. None of which I am associated with and all of which were copmpetitors of mine when I was in that business lol
Editall/Catmv lmocr Posted December 3, 2005 Editall/Catmv Posted December 3, 2005 Because it's a target for spam, it is not a good place for a newbie. If you're interested in helping to build the directory, you'll have to look to a different area. I would recommend: a small Regional category like your hometown or a neighboring town; or a hobby or sport.
redline Posted December 3, 2005 Author Posted December 3, 2005 Thanks for the suggestions and comments to everyone. I'll start dmoz surfing for something humble and small to try again LOL
bobrat Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 Congrats x 2 - I've never seen someone get a second categroy within a few hours of the first
motsa Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 Read his thread in the New Editors forum about the original category and you'll understand.
