I have fairly recently submitted my site to be added to a category.

Category= Regional:North America:United States:California::Counties:Mendocino:Travel & Tourism

My Site= mendocinoconneciton.com

This category is actually very small, the county itself is relatively unpopulated. It appears to me that this category is not actively being updated. One link (Mendocino County Promotional Alliance) is a broken link and has been for quite awhile. Several other links although obviously relevant are not listed. Plus, although not conclusive in itself, the category has a "become an editor" link at the bottom.

The question is, should I apply to become an editor? Being completely honest with myself it probably wouldn't even occur to me if my site was processed and listed in the directory. I can, however, view it as a public service to the area, as it seems that ODP is sort of passing us by.

If I did this, I obviously would want to include my own site. There must be other people that feel similarly in other categories. Should I go ahead and apply as an editor and is this approriate?

Thanks to anyone in the know.

Joining to add sites in a category that's important to you is good -- even if you've created a site on that subject because, duh, it's IMPORTANT to you.

Joining to add only your own site, or only suggested sites, is not good.

If you're willing to go out hunting for other local websites ... and use the ODP stylesheet for describing them -- then yes, please, apply.

If this area is of interest, by all means go ahead and apply as an editor.

When I was finally accepted as an editor (after 3 attempts), my category was: http://dmoz.org/Society/Organizations/Service_Clubs/Lions_Clubs_International/North_America/United_States/New_York which had only maybe 6 sites in it (I used my Lions Club site on the application, as well as other sites relevant to this category).

Before you submit an application, read http://resource-zone.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1289.

Good luck. :)
