Expertu Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 Hi guys, I want my listing: IT Xperts - Offers a web directory using live data from the Open Directory Project. in this category : Directories/Open_Directory_Project/Sites_Using_ODP_Data/I/ removed, because that website does no longer exist, and i 301 redirected that address Thank you.
Expertu Posted May 29, 2006 Author Posted May 29, 2006 Thanks for the removal. Also note that in the same category: http://ilectric.com/ - Not using the described content anymore (page with affiliate links). http://www.indexfree.com/index.php - Not using the described content anymore
jeanmanco Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 Thanks for checking. Index Free has been removed. Ilectric still has an ODP-based directory with the correct attribution.
Expertu Posted May 29, 2006 Author Posted May 29, 2006 Ilectric still has an ODP-based directory with the correct attribution. It's a single page, filled with affiliate links : ilectric is unavailable. 0% Credit Cards Find the best offers for 0% APR Credit Cards Search for finances at eBay At eBay you can find practically anything, even finances. eBay's the place to buy or sell electronics, cars, clothing, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods, digital cameras and more. Are you sure we are looking at the same page ? http://ilectric.com/
jeanmanco Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 We are looking at the same url, but not seeing the same page. I can see a functional site. I have checked in a different browser, going in direct and not via the ODP. Possibly the domain is blocking a range of IPs that includes yours.
motsa Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 It appears we're not looking at the same thing. Try clicking on the link you just listed here -- does it really take you to the page you describe? I see what I suspect jeanmanco sees, a full site. See the attached screenshot.

motsa Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 Dang. Try http://dmozed.org/Stuff/ilectric.gif There's nothing funny in its meta tags or code. Maybe your ISP's DNS servers are messed up or you have a spyware infection. What IP do you get when you PING them?
Expertu Posted May 29, 2006 Author Posted May 29, 2006 Reply from 66.98.179.184: bytes=32 time=655ms TTL=45 I just asked several other friends (Romania, Canada, USA) to go there. They see the same thing as i do.
motsa Posted May 29, 2006 Posted May 29, 2006 Are you travelling with a bad group of people? LOL I get the same IP you do but you can see what I see and what jeanmanco sees. Do you see what you see if you go directly to the IP address instead of the FQDN?
motsa Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Hmmm, their terms of use says "SPYWARE SCANNING ilectric has determined that spyware is a serious problem to all users of the Internet. Spyware is software that malicious people secretly install on a computer for the purpose of recording user behavior and/or displaying unwanted advertising. Accordingly ilectric may scan visitors to the ilectric website for spyware. If spyware is detected then the user will be offered a link to remove it. Otherwise the scanning will be completely transparent to the user and will in no way interfere with the normal operation of your website. " Wonder if maybe that's the trouble. That would explain the parasite.js script reference (it's an IE spyware scanner).
Expertu Posted May 30, 2006 Author Posted May 30, 2006 Trust me. I do not have spyware in my computer. I do not use Internet Explorer, at all. Only when testing websites. The source was taken with Firefox. 3 other people see the same page as i do. We are all web professionals. We all have spyware ? Oh .. It doesn't matter
jeanmanco Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Yes the screenshot motsa gave is what I saw. I did wonder whether cloaking was going on, with the functional page being served up to ODP editors. That's why I tested with another browser and not routing in via the ODP at all. Very strange.
Expertu Posted May 30, 2006 Author Posted May 30, 2006 Check the Google index. It's not in it. Check the cache in Yahoo and MSN. It doesn't have any. Exactly the meta tags i gave you above. Check the meta tags YOU see in the "real" website. Does it contain any robots no-cache tag ?
motsa Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Actually, my last post was not saying that you have spyware but that perhaps there's something about your and your friends' computer setups that doesn't work well with ilectric's spyware scanning thingy or causes them to serve you a markedly different page from the rest of us. That's why I tested with another browser and not routing in via the ODP at all. Yeah, me, too. Very weird.
motsa Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 Check the meta tags YOU see in the "real" website. Does it contain any robots no-cache tag ?Nope, just a 'noarchive' tag. Don't know what to tell you. If you figure it out, let us know. In the meantime, the site is listable according to what we all see.
Expertu Posted May 30, 2006 Author Posted May 30, 2006 Well i see it OK with a proxy. Doesn't matter anymore.. Too much time spent Thanks for trying at least :o
Editall Callimachus Posted May 30, 2006 Editall Posted May 30, 2006 Hmm I don't see the ads, I do see the directory but I don't see any attrbution. Meta shadow575 Posted May 30, 2006 Meta Posted May 30, 2006 Hmm I don't see the ads, I do see the directory but I don't see any attrbution. It took me a bit to find it too. An example http://ilectric.com/glance/Regional/ , it just isn't on the "Top" page of the directory anywhere that I can see. Meta shadow575 Posted May 31, 2006 Meta Posted May 31, 2006 Ha, looked at the site again after seeing lmocr simultaneous post with mine yesterday. On the "top" page of the directory: http://ilectric.com/glance/ which was working just fine a couple of seconds ago, just as it was for me yesterday. I noticed down in the lower left corner there was a hidden link something like http://ilectric.com/bad-bot ? Which for some reason I clicked and now all I get for that page is: "ilectric is unavailable." followed by a bunch of affilliate links. I checked it on all my networked computers and they all see the same result. So you aren't crazy expertu there is something weird there, unfortunately someone more technically minded than me will have to figure it out Shadow *The opinions I offer are my own and may not represent the opinions of Curlie.org or other editors.* It can take anywhere from two hours to several years for a site review to take place. motsa Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 Presumably, it's their way of stopping bad 'bots from scraping their copy of the directory. I'd guess it was based on IP address or something since Expertu could see the right stuff when he used a proxy. But that's just my uneducated guess. I tried clicking the http://ilectric.com/bad-bot link and I can't make it think I'm bad -- I just get redirected to the main ilectric page. And if I try to click the link from your post, I get a 404 page.
Meta shadow575 Posted May 31, 2006 Meta Posted May 31, 2006 - Guess I am a bad-bot then. Darn, always tried to be a good-bot I clicked that little ole link and now I get the affiliate pages that expertu talks about Guess when my IP resets I will have to try again. Thanks motsa for checking it out. 1 Shadow *The opinions I offer are my own and may not represent the opinions of Curlie.org or other editors.* It can take anywhere from two hours to several years for a site review to take place.
