Hi,

I would like to discusss the category and the description for the website:

<url removed per forum tos>

before posting to DMOZ.

Title: The Cedar Station

Description: Online furniture store offering teak and red cedar patio furniture in exquisite designs for home and garden decor. We also offer unfinished furniture kits.

The Top categories to choose from are:

https://dmoztools.net/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Furniture/

https://dmoztools.net/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Patio/Furniture/

https://dmoztools.net/Business/Consumer_Goods_and_Services/Home_and_Garden/Furniture/

For the Regional listing:

https://dmoztools.net/Regional/North_America/United_States/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/Furniture/

or should I select one of these

https://dmoztools.net/Regional/North_America/United_States/Delaware/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/

https://dmoztools.net/Regional/North_America/United_States/Delaware/Localities/R/Rehoboth_Beach/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/

but these do not contain listings for furniture stores and these would be too internal.

Is the Description OK

Please suggest the best suitable category for the website.

Thanks & Regards

Re: Discuss Category & Description before posting.

You are describing your product not your web site. The general rule of thumb for writing a description is to describe the purpose of the site, and the features of the site. What is the purpose of your web site? Selling teak and cedar furniture? Say that. What are some of the features of your site? Do you show product descriptions and pricing? Do you tell the users how they can buy your product? These are the types of things to write in your description.

I'm not an expert in Shopping categories, but I would hazard a guess that https://dmoztools.net/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Patio/Furniture/ would be the most appropriate here.

I don't think that you would be getting a Regional listing for this site. This site doesn't seem to have much relevance to any Regional location. Just having an address for people to send their money to does not automatically qualify your site for a second listing in Regional. Regional usually means a "brick and mortar" location, or at least some regional relevance. Do you employ hundreds of people in the area, or offer specific information about the area? Probably not :)

If you do want to try for a Regional/ listing then https://dmoztools.net/Regional/North_America/United_States/Delaware/Localities/R/Rehoboth_Beach/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/ is your best bet, but as donaldb says it is unlikely that you'll get it.

You should also avoid words like "exquisite" - we do not allow subjective adjectives in descriptions.

Re: Discuss Category & Description before posting.

Thanks

I would go for the suggested categories only. But both these categories do not have any editors at present. Also the last update date is for Jan, 2003 in the Top listing and Feb, 2003 in the Regional Listing. Is there any hope to have an editor look at these categries in a month or two?

As for the description,

Online furniture store offering teak and red cedar patio furniture for home and garden decor. Provide complete information on products description, pricing and shipping details.

Would the above description be acceptable?

Thanks & Regards

Re: Discuss Category & Description before posting.

No :)

You don't need to say that it's an online store, as you're submitting it to a Shopping category. Being in Shopping implies that it is an online shopping store.

You don't need to mention that it's patio furniture if you're submitting to the patio furniture category. Everything in that category is patio furniture so there is no need to repeat it in the description.

Same thing with home and garden. Why repeat it in the description when you're listed in the home and garden section.

"Offers teak and red cedar furniture. Includes products descriptions, pricing and shipping details."

I know that this makes it sound like every other web site in the same category, but really when you look at all of the web sites in that category, they really do look the same :) What makes your web site stand out from the rest? What makes this web site unique?

Actually, you were told that only the topical category was appropriate since you don't appear to have an actual "bricks and mortar" physical location. But, in any case, we can't offer a guarantee (or even an estimate) of when any given category might be reviewed -- submit your site to the most appropriate category, regardless of when that category was last updated or whether or not there is a listed editor there.

Right, I would go for the listings but please review the description also. Now, is it acceptable.

Re: Discuss Category & Description before posting.

Read donaldb's excellent critique and suggested description. FWIW I'd write a very similar one for most sites I review, The two sentence approach is my 'style'.
