Google Directory a clone or not

Somebody tell me that the google directory is a perfect clone of dmoz.

Is it true?

 

Are there, in google directory, sites that are not listed in dmoz?

 

Every site that is listed in dmoz it will in google ? (after directory update)

 

I am asking that because of :

The content of the Google directory is based on the Open Directory and is enhanced using Google's own technology.

Google directory is not a "perfect" clone, that is, it is usually an older and less updated version of dmoz.org. Dmoz.org changes every day: new sites are listed, broken URLs are removed or changed, descriptions are updated. Google directory only updates from time to time; when they have just updated, the two directories should be very similar. The sort order in the categories is not the same; in dmoz.org it is alphabetical and in Google it is... some other order, don't ask me what it's based on because I don't know.

So, all the links from Google Directory are only from Dmoz and Google do not use another source for links ?

As far as I know: No (Talking about the Google directory here of course, not the Google search). Any more detailed answer would have to come from Google, not from us.

I have always assumed (but have no proof) that when Google makes a copy it's a one for one snapshot of the entries at the time it makes the copy, but that only refers to the list of websites.

 

You should note that it does not display or use that information in exactly the same way as the DMOZ directory. For example it does not identify "Cool Sites" - which in DMOZ would be listed at the start of the sites within a category. It display sites in it's own "order of importance" Page Rank, as opposed to DMOZ, which (with the exception of Cool Sites) displays sites in title order. (Google has the option to display in apha order but it's not exactly the same, for example it does not ignore "The" in a title)

 

Dated sites (which are generally news items) appears in DMOZ at the bottom of the category in reverse date order. In Google they get mixed in with the rest, and the date does not display.

 

As far as categories, it displays sub-categories as one group, whereas DMOZ may subdivide sub-categories into as many as three logical groups. It does not display the corresponding categories in other languages, or usenet groups.

 

I'm sure there are other differences.

I actually just recently ran into the DMOZ from using the directory in Google. I didn't realize that G was using another source for their directory. DMOZ looks very intriguing... Intriguing enough for me to apply to become an editor. I LOVE attention to detail and organization. However, after reading through these forums it doesn't look like I'll have much luck becoming an editor. : ) Oh well...

Don't be detracted by the posters here. Some are SEOs that only want to become an editor to list their own site and delete thier competition. We have new editors added every day and if you are detail oriented and would love to build this directory, then there may be a place for you. Read the info carefully and apply today!

I know that they are the same thing and google supports dmoz.This is a very big project, thanks all editors.But like gboisseau write, this is a big power.So editors must obey all rules.
