Do I need to resubmit?

There is a rumour flying about that all sites submited priar to the Dmoz system going down have been lost or deleted, is this true? Do I need to resubmit myne and my clients sites once submissions are back on?

It is indeed a rumour, and like all rumours is pure speculation and/or wishful thinking.

As we have explained, the recovery/repair efforts are ongoing, and when there is more news affecting non-editors, the Announcement will be updated. At the moment the site suggestion form is not yet functional, so the question is moot anyway.

Actually it is a question that is spreading, one domain register told me today that I should take advantage of this as Dmoz will be looking for more content and quickly. You people should talk to some of the whose who, we don’t make this crap up, we are being told this. I am not posting any more phone numbers here or domain companies.

 

I can say the big ones have a lot to say about Dmoz. So I think based of what I am being told the submissions box will be spamed over loaded and become a real big waste of an editors time to even look there.

What is new. The submissions were already overloaded with spam and mostly a waste of our time. But it still was a possibility for us to find good new sites. Seems nothing has changed. Or do you know a way to stop all spam.

I wish I knew of a way to lower the spam, I do know what people are being told, and I do worry that would just discourage editors from even looking there any more. I get the feeling the most hate going in these areas.

That is not a problem for DMOZ.

I reviewed over 100 site suggestions yesterday, and as the site suggestion function isn't working yet, that would lead one to question the validity of such a rumor don't you think?

I do have an idea to remove submission automation spam, it would require about 5 lines of code being added to the submission page. You would call a php script and test and reject entries based on the missing information. I got the idea from the big money and developed a cheaper way of doing this.

 

The php script only has 132 lines of code and its over all size it 3k, it takes about 2 minutes to implement in any form.

 

I use a script in the tell a friend and contact a seller the has removed 99% of the spam, there are the persistent ones that manage to make it through by visiting the form them selves and manually using it, those lame brains I delete and block the ip, some ips can not be blocked with out blocking a whole lot of people.

 

It uses the GD lib and some fonts really portable code. It has been so easy to implement, I use it in other places as well.

Just to prevent misunderstandings - ODP already has filters blocking a lot of suggestion form spam. Not unsurprisingly, the most difficult to stop is "normal" usage of the form, where the user is suggesting unlistable sites.

Tim, so far as we know, automated submittal spam is not a significant issue.

That is an extremely useful statement. In a world where there is so much misinformation, it's always useful to be able to eliminate one source of it....and you've been given that gift. You now know a domain register that is stupid, deceptive, and ignorant -- or maybe just two out of three. In the future, if you ever need to know the direction of sunrise, you know one person NOT to ask.
