TTT Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Here we are with a niagara falls travel guide and hotel and have tried to have our site/s listed for the better part of 5 years and i am attaching an example of what appears in the directory, a PPC parking page yet after 5 years with the most detailed and interactive website IMHO of niagara falls we still cant get listed. Just another example to go along with my first ever post here. http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/Canada/Ontario/Localities/N/Niagara_Falls/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Hotels_and_Motels/ Selected Niagara Falls Canada Motels - A selection of hotels, inns, and motels, with links to each location, rates, and facilities of each. its no wonder we cannot get listed...
crowbar Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 I wouldn't say that's why you haven't been listed, I'd say it was more likely because the category is a spam magnet, there are 40 sites in there already, and there may be no editor who wants to go in there and wade through all the garbage that gets submitted to it. Travel guides are some of the worst of the worst, spamwise. I try to stay away from them when I can. When I do get all crazy, and take a look at them, I soon get tired of sifting through them, and go edit elsewhere. From a web surfer/users point of view (which is all that we're interested in), 40 sites should be more than enough for them to find what they're looking for. If I had access to that particular category, which I don't, that site wouldn't be there long.
TTT Posted January 22, 2007 Author Posted January 22, 2007 Each hotel website and property is independant of each other. embassysuites has nothing to do with a howard johnsons its too bad you feel the way you do about only listing a certain number as many of us hotel owners depend on places such as dmoz for users to find us. so whats next? only list 3 types of running shoes and let ford , chrysler and gm battle it out for the 2 motor vehicle spots... a multi million dollar hotel cannot get listed in a directory but a run down beaten up sleazy motel can get in... Its no wonder the falls had a bad reputation just my 2 cents,
motsa Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 its too bad you feel the way you do about only listing a certain number as many of us hotel owners depend on places such as dmoz for users to find us.The point he was making was not that we list only a certain number of hotel sites (because that's patently not true) but that hotel categories tend to be heavily-spammed and editors tend to find other places to edit rather than wade through heavily-spammed categories, especially if there are already a number of sites listed in said spammy category (if the category were nearly empty, some editors might feel an urgency to ensure that more sites were listed there). I suspect that most area hotels and motels are represented in the category since that is primarily what the category is for. Hotel guides, on the other hand, well, those tend to be overwhelmed by the junk that is out there. Eventually, someone will get around to wading through the junk to get to the good stuff. If you have a hotel site (as opposed to a hotel guide site, which is likely to get lost in the junk no matter what you do), you can make it easier for that editor to find the hotel by ensuring that your title and description meet our guidelines when you suggest your site.
crowbar Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 its too bad you feel the way you do about only listing a certain number as many of us hotel owners depend on places such as dmoz for users to find us. I don't believe I said that, exactly. I said 40 sites is quite a few choices for a user to have for finding what they're looking for. I don't speak for the ODP, I'm only speaking for myself, and being honest with you. The most common reason why a site suggestion hasn't been listed is because there has been no editor who has chosen to review it yet, and a website should be just one of many tools a business uses to get customers, and I'm sure it is in your case, not THE tool. Whoops, got interrupted before I could answer, motsa said it better.
Meta nea Posted January 22, 2007 Meta Posted January 22, 2007 i am attaching an example of what appears in the directory, a PPC parking page Sorry, but where did you say you posted that information? We obviously want to know about listed sites that have become parked. :moz: Curlie Meta and kMeta editor nea
TTT Posted January 22, 2007 Author Posted January 22, 2007 and a website should be just one of many tools a business uses to get customers, and I'm sure it is in your case, How correct you are sir. I have sent Motsa a brief pm outlining my first post on this forum and I look forward to becoming more active... If I can at least help clean up a given category then the end user will benefit.
