Meta nea Posted February 26, 2007 Meta Posted February 26, 2007 That is a typical example of a site that should be listed in two categories. Neither the geographical location nor the site's focus is more relevant - they are both relevant, and so the site should be listed in both places. In fact, the site should ideally be listed in two more categories, namely the World/Français equivalents of the English-language categories, since it is available in French as well as English. rommil.santiago Posted February 26, 2007 Author Posted February 26, 2007 Ah ok, no worries. But I'm a bit confused. When I had applied as an editor, I got refused because I suggested to insert Twist Image in the http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/Canada/Quebec/Localities/M/Montreal/Business_and_Economy/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/ category, but got this comment upon my rejection: "http://www.twistimage.com has a much wider scope than Web Design which is why it's listed in ../Montreal/Business_and_Economy/Advertising_and_Marketing . Please try again but with three websites that fit the category ." Seeing as its listed in: Business: Business Services: Design: Graphic Design: Designers: Multi-Discipline: North America: Canada: Quebec Why isn't it deemed suitable in the Web Design category as that is one of its primary services? Before I re-apply, I just wanted to make sure where I went wrong. Let me know - thanks!
Meta windharp Posted February 26, 2007 Meta Posted February 26, 2007 As the reply you received says, it is listed in http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/Canada/Quebec/Localities/M/Montreal/Business_and_Economy/Advertising_and_Marketing/ as well. Which is in the same regional branch as your application was. And listing twice in the same regional branch is something we don't do :-) Curlie Meta/kMeta Editor windharp
gimmster Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 To put it another way, in the Regional branch the location is primary, so it does fit within the Montreal category. Sub categories of Montreal contain sites subdivided by topic. Montreal/Business_and_Economy/Computers_and_Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/ is for sites that only (or mainly) provide web design, hosting, promotion, maintenance, or e-commerce development services. Montreal/Business_and_Economy/Advertising_and_Marketing/ is for sites about local businesses and organizations related to advertising and promotion, including sites for local businesses offering services that advertise, promote and encourage sales for other businesses. You will note that in the category that site is lised in there is a link Web Design and Development@ that points to the web design category. This @link indicates that Web Design and Development is a virtual sub category of Advertising and Marketing. Individual sites are listed in the category that encompasses their business offerings, since they offer more than just WD&D, they are listed in the category that encompasses both WD&D and advertising/marketing services. We do not list sites in a category and a sub category (even if a virtual one), so it's current listing is appropriate for Regional. I can't comment on the listing in Business: Business Services: Design: Graphic Design: Designers: Multi-Discipline: North America: Canada: Quebec , but that is not a WD&D Topical category. WD&D in the Topical part of the directory is in Computers - http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/ which is where a specialist web design company would be listed, not in the Business tree. Hope this clears some of it up for you.
