kevbro Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Hi, I have only posted in these forums twice before ... and thank all respondents. Both posts related to submission of our company website which is not yet listed in the directory. In neither posting did I mention the company name nor website, and yet when I check our backlinks at Reportbot, as I often do, I am amazed to find both my postings showing as backlinks from Yahoo and Altavista ! How can this possibly be ? I can supply our url in a PM for anyone to check this out, but remain mystified that simple postings by myself under my username can then emerge on the net as a backlink to a website not yet listed ! regards, Kevin
gimmster Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Would looking at your public profile maybe provide a clue?
kevbro Posted March 29, 2007 Author Posted March 29, 2007 I appreciate that company url is in my profile but cannot see how personal information can get via what is a file on your system, and a forum posting, to become a backlink to the company ? still mystified Kevin
motsa Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Would looking at your public profile maybe provide a clue?Profiles here aren't accessible by guests, including bots.
gimmster Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 OK, well you've got me then, it's the only link I could find between here and there. I plugged your url into search there and it definitely shows these posts as backlinks, although the url is not in the posts (and does not appear to have been edited out). I do see that it's only Altavista that is seeing that though. (Search on the Altavista site duplicates that result). The only other thing I can think of is that there is some tracking software being used by kevbro (similar to the Alexa toolbar) that is feeding information back to Altavista.
chaos127 Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 I don't think there's a mystery here. If you look at the source for this thread page (even as a non-logged in guest), there's the following code: Visit kevbro's homepage! which I guess qualifies as a backlink. In the usual browser-interpretted view of the world, this link is hidded until it's revealed by clicking on the author name by the post. At which point a drop-down list appears including the link.
kevbro Posted April 2, 2007 Author Posted April 2, 2007 hi again, I am pretty sure now that Chaos 127 has solved the 'mystery' and am again thankful for the replies made, and the insight that you guys have. thanks Kevin
