I have a pretty good idea of what it's like to build a gigantic website using volunteers since that's what I've been doing for over a decade, now.

So I am sympathetic to the fact that this organization doesn't necessarily get it right all the time.

But I am visiting this site for the first time today, having come from here from Alexes.

I found that my site description is somewhat out of date.

It described our site as offering "dozens" of book for free online reading

Now, that would have been accurate in 1996 the day we launched. We offered about 70 books back then. I think our total book count is now something like 1200 books published in thirty languages. We are the largest such website in the world, actually.

So DMOC's description (picked by Alexes) offers a VERY misleading description to anyone seeking to understand what my site is all about.

I blame myself for not knowing this site even existed, to keep the description up to date.

Some of you know how it is...you're so busy building your site and organizations, you don't have the time to troll the internet to keep the information about your site up to date on other directory websites.

But still...I cannot help but wonder where that original misinformation came from to begin with.

Well, hopefully, this misinformation will be corrected once dmoz allows me to get into their system to correct my sites description

Right now, DMOZ isn't taking editing corrections, so that puts still another thing on my "to-do when its possible" list...check back here to see when I can finally update the site's profile.

Will it fall off my radar?

Probably.

Just one of the joys of running a 501©(3) without much money. There's far more to manage than there are managers to keep on top of things.

Dmoz won't allow you to get into the system yourself merely to correct the site information - you can apply to become an editor, of course, but that's a bad idea unless you really are interested in finding, reviewing, classifying and describing websites other than your own.

What you can do, and what we encourage you to do if the site description is misleading, is to go to the dmoz.org category where the site is listed, and click "Update listing" at the top of the page. This will allow you to enter a suggested description update; there is no time frame for updates to happen but most editors tend to give them priority. It can still take some time, depending on how much editorial activity there is in the category. When the update request is processed, the reviewing editor will determine whether the description needs to be rewritten or not, and will make sure that the new description conforms to the dmoz.org guidelines.

Right now, DMOZ isn't taking editing corrections

What do you mean? Are you trying to submit an update request and receiving an error message? If so, what does the message say? If the problem is simply that nothing happens once you have submitted the update request, well, as I said above, there is no time frame. It is unfortunate that outdated descriptions are not being updated immediately, of course, but at least you have done all you can do by submitting a request for it to be updated.

Sites in the Kids and Teens section of DMOZ are described in such a way that children understand them. Therefore while 1200 may be more accurate "dozens" is still technically correct (just 100 dozens ;) ) and IMO its probably ok for the K&T section. I don't know anything about Alexa, but if they are pulling the Kids and Teens description vs the Classic (Regional) one that would be an issue you would have to take up with them. DMOZ can't control how someone else interprets, uses, or displays the data so long as they obtain it through the Free License Agreement.

It can take anywhere from two hours to several years for a site review to take place.

I do not respond to private messages requesting site status checks.
