DMOZ Spammed by its own Editors

It looks like DMOZ is getting hijacked by spam Editors. This is the only reason why link submissions are getting delayed without any reason.

 

 

We provide legal information related to different legal firms. DMOZ directory has excellent repository of legal resources and law firms. We syndicate results from DMOZ directory to present useful information to our online new york legal directory.

 

However we observed several discrepancies within New York category ( http://www.dmoz.org/Society/Law/Services/Lawyers_and_Law_Firms/Personal_Injury/North_America/United_States/New_York/).

 

Take for example:-

 

a) http://www.decarokaplen.com/ - Site not working anymore. Does not provide any useful legal information

 

b) http://www.bwhlawfirm.com/ - Site not a legal firm. It is just an outdated link, redirecting to lawyers.com directory.

 

c) http://www.thebarnesfirm.com/ redirecting ---> http://www.cellinoandbarnes.com/

 

d) http://www.bartonesq.net/ --> redirecting --> http://www.personalinjurylawnyc.com/

 

e) http://www.birnlaw.com/ ---> redirecting --> http://1800nylawyer.com/

 

f) http://www.bradyandschaefer.com/ --> redirecting --> http://www.buffaloaccidentlaw.com/

 

g) http://members.aol.com/attorneydl/ -- > INVALID redirecting to a POOR QUALITY PAGE

 

h) http://www.decarokaplen.com/ --> SITE INVALID

 

i) http://www.law-pi.com/ --> SPAM LINK POINTING --> http://www.einsteinindustries.com/ ( Search Marketing Company)

 

 

All these links clearly show that DMOZ is getting spammed by its own EDITORS.

 

I reported this error several times to DMOZ, but I never received any update. Ultimately we had to REMOVE DMOZ syndicated results from our useful resources page.

 

IT IS REALLY SAD TO SEE DMOZ GETTING SPAMMED BY ITS OWN EDITORS, WHO SIMPLY REFUSE TO RESPOND IF SOMEBODY REPORTS A SPAM IN THEIR RESULTS.

 

IF DMOZ CAN TAKE ANY STEPS TO REMOVE THESE INVALID / SPAM LINKS FROM ITS DIRECTORY THEN IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED .

Really? You don't think that a large number of site suggestions from the public per day, coupled with a finite number of volunteer editors with a finite amount of free time that they're prepared to donate to the project might have a far bigger effect on things?

How exactly did you make the reports? The best two options would have been to post in the Report Hijacks, Dead Links, Inappropriate ODP Content, and other issues here ONLY thread here at RZ, or to use the "update listing" link on the category page in question.

 

It's not my area, so I won't be fixing those listings, but now that you've posted here, I'm sure someone will take a look shortly...

g - I did not find a problem (may not be a pretty site, but it works and fits the category).

Over time companies may change URLs, change content or go off-line. They do not always let us know so it is helpful when directory users report these problems. If you find any other issues, please feel free to report them as noted by chaos127:

Well I dont think they have finite amount of free Time.

 

It looks like they have devoted their entire lifetimes not to include quality links, and they will make sure that SPAMMY links stay as long as possible.

 

Just check out how errenously, somebody could include a link given below

This clearly shows that something is really wrong with DMOZ.

 

I would surely wish that Google to stop relying on results shown by DMOZ. Surely Google's seperate directory ( not syndicated with DMOZ) will help to resolve serious crisis of DMOZ.

Including a working link that later changes content or redirects is not an erroneous listing. And if people can't be bothered letting us know via one of our public methods (update url or the thread in this forum) that the site has changed it is not an error on the editors part that it stays listed.

 

Automated link checkers can only do so much - they can tell if a site redirects or is dead. They have a much harder time with sites that change content. Manually checking all 6 million listings daily as you seem to want done is just impossible.

 

As for the rest of your nonsense it isn't worth the time responding to, and the reason is that you have already made up your mind based on something you have no personal knowledge of.

Simply because you find one category that has some dead or redirecting links to, doesn't mean that the intent was to list those types of sites. It simply means that after someone took the time to add sites, no one felt interested enough to go back and check on them recently.

Yeah it clearly shows that sites die off, and there aren't enough editors with enough time to catch them all immediately. http://web.archive.org/web/20060814011914/http://www.bwhlawfirm.com/ shows that the site was not always a redirect. When the site was added it was a ligitimate link to a Personal Injury Law site. Attacking the editors is the wrong target, track down the site owner and asking him why he let the URL go.

Last I checked, Google didn't rely soley on anyone source to return their results. Certainly not their own directory which is a DMOZ clone.
