Hello Staff,

I'd like to know what will happen to our submissions if the editor of that particular category is your competitor? Will they never approve your submitted listings?

I'm asking it because this is important to us. I submitted one of our websites in the proper category years ago and I don't know if that category has any editor or the editor is some competiror? Anyhow our listings are still pending (i assume so if they are not deleted by someone) and we have no way to have any clue since you have stopped us to post the site status check questions.

Kindly spare some of your precious time (i know your time is very precious) and post your valueable responses.

Kind Regards,

Ajay Chadha (Director)

Plural?

Your main website is already listed twice and has been for over a year.

If you have other entirely unrelated ones that haven't been suggested since 2006, please do so again.

you didn't answer his question.

It shouldn't matter if the editor is a competitor of yours because an editor should be unbiased towards any site. As long as your site follows the guidelines and isn't already listed, and has been submitted to the right category then it's just a matter of waiting.

hmm, dont you just wish all people actually were like that...most editors like Jimnoble take their role seriously, but some just cheat and make it a bad experience for us all.

Please stop making unfounded claims. If you have proof of any actual abuse by an editor, head over to our abuse report system and tell us. Just posting general accusations helps noone.

Yeah, true. Sorry, but it does get frustrating sometimes.

Doesn't it just.

Since it's apparently OK to let off steam by making up some entirely fictitious accusation I'll invent one of my own.

Thinking, thinking..... Got it.

Yes, it get very frustrating that

:icon_arro people suggest sites that we clearly will not list

:icon_arro people suggest sites without reading the guidelines

:icon_arro people complaining about something DMOZ does not provide (a listing service)

:icon_arro people making unfounded accusations just because DMOZ will not do what they want it to do and in the time they want it be done

It would become much easier if all these people would just stop.

This vocal minority just spoils everything for the majority of honest and decent website owners and for the DMOZ editor community.

I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.

Editors take this seriously. Even though editing is done in spare time in most cases, Editors have to ensure quality websites are listed. This being the case, competition is irrelevant. If an Editor were to keep the competition out of a certain category then it would be impossible to build that category right? DMOZ has it's own way of policing the directory and it makes that practice impossible without getting caught. Therefore it is not an issue.

I have no opinion whatsoever. Ignore whatever I said because I was probably asleep when I said it :D

We do not answer site submission status requests. Click here to read why

Hello Staff,

I'd like to know what will happen to our submissions if the editor of that particular category is your competitor? Will they never approve your submitted listings?

Why would they approve any site, indeed?! They're simple people, after all, and they own websites to make money, most of them, not for a hobby. So why not eliminate the competitors, at least here, on Dmoz, where they can do it?!

Besides, they're so many posts with people saying their submissions was refused, though the description was right, the category was the right one etc.etc.

I know some editor will answer the same to me: "Submitters don't read the rules bla.bla..." Let me just answer to whatever you'll say to protect the dmoz image: People can read, all webmasters can read and I'm sure most of them sent the corect submission since everyone knows it takes forever to get listed here - most of the webmasters don't make mistakes when submitting a site, because of this. But the refused submissions seem to be too many - and is impossible to say that all of them haven't read the TOS... is like saying all are stupid or something.

However, I'm sure if you'll bribe one you'll get listed in no time :)

Sometimes you wonder about that...

Not true, you would be banned permanently if you tried.

Where?

Your main website is already listed twice and has been for over a year.

I am not sure what happened but our main website's listing does not exist anymore in its respective category. Is there any update going on or was it deleted. I didn't even received an updated about it.

Can you please be so kind to shed some light on this issue? I've just resubmitted the main website's listing in the following category.

Regional/Asia/India/Punjab/Localities/Jalandhar/Business_and_Economy/Computers_and_Internet

In anticipation of your response...

Then it must have been deleted. Either temporary or permanent.

> Is there any update going on or was it deleted.

There are always updates going on. And websites are added and removed every day.

> I didn't even received an updated about it.

And you never will.

> Can you please be so kind to shed some light on this issue?

No, we can and will not discuss individual sites.

> I've just resubmitted the main website's listing in the following category.

There was no need for a new suggestion but it will not harm you.

Sites can be removed for several reasons, some of them are

- the site was not available, it is removed temporary for an editor to investigate

- the site changed content and is no longer listable

- the guidelines changed and the site is no longer listable under the new guidelines

- a new category is created and the site did fit better in that new category, it is moved - which could mean that it is temporary not visible

If it was removed temporary it will become listed again after an editor looked at the situation, which includes a new review. No suggestion needed.

If it was removed permanently it will not be listed again. No suggestion needed.

I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.

May I know the reason of deletion as I'm quite sure that there was no reason out of the above mentioned 'several reasons'?

I can understand that you guys do not have time for discussing individual website but at least I must have the right to know if this was an accidental deletion or planned deletion by some competitor.

Please do not mistake my above words but try to think of yourself in my position and feel the pain.

It's not about time. This forum has a policy of not discussing individual sites. pvgool already gave you some advice regarding what you can do and what you can expect to happen. I'm afraid that's all we have for you.

I have made some mistakes in my posting on this forum. I have read many responses and it looks like the same answers every time I hear someone ask a question. I have been trying to list my site for several years, today I went to the "Wayback Machine" and seen my site WAS listed in 2002 through 2004 but is no longer.

The site I am mentioning is in every way legitimate but was removed, it's a retail site selling a unique product that has been in production for over 20 years. I can not find a reason why nor can I get a straight answer. Did my competition remove it? Was there a mistake? Did I make a mistake and will pay for it forever? I can not get a straight answer except for the fact that DMOZ is run by volunteers and after reading so many replies they do what they and we have little to no recourse.

A little self reflection might do some people some good, sorry editors but what all of you seem to say is, you are in control and only those we choose to edit will get listed and if WE decide you site is not unique or what ever other reason you come up with it's just tuff luck and we do not have to give you any kind of real answer.

Someone (a mod or editor) asked me how I know about blackballing, well I know a previous editor and he told me all about it and showed me in a some cases. He was one of those who worked to make DMOZ a good place but got tired of the bickering and back biting. Most every editor works in their business field and there was a lot of favoritism and lack of professionalism, editors work in most every complaint was always taken over the webmasters. I was holding this comment back but was asked a question, after seeing what I saw on the "Wayback Machine" I got a little frustrated and felt it had to be posted. As I have been taught, don't ask the question is you do not what an answer!

For those who do not know about the "Wayback Machine", it archives most all websites and is very detailed, from my understanding the courts use it all the time.

You can suggest a site that isn't already listed. (You can suggest it up to twice. More often is not helpful.)

You can expect the suggestion to be reviewed. We don't know when that will happen.

It is hardly ever useful to discuss editing actions with the webmaster. The actions aren't done for his benefit, so it's always OK if he doesn't get a benefit from them.

Consistency is good :).

my site WAS listed in 2002 through 2004 but is no longer

Websites are listed/moved/delisted for all sorts of reasons. Sadly, AOL's servers had an enormous crash in late 2006 and most logs were lost. Even if we wanted to tell you why yours was removed, despite this forum's ToC, we probably couldn't.

you are in control and only those we choose to edit will get listed and if WE decide you site is not unique or what ever other reason you come up with it's just tuff luck
I think you'll find that we all work to our publicly available guidelines. You could use them yourself to critically evaluate your site. Websites can be re-evaluated from time to time and no site is guaranteed a permanent listing.

and we do not have to give you any kind of real answer
We learned the hard way that arguing about whether or not a particular website should be listed isn't productive - which is exactly why we won't do it any more.

Lastly, by all means suggest your website once to the one best category. Some volunteer will process your listing suggestion in time but we can't predict who or when that might be. Elapsed times can range from a few days to a few years. There is no need to re-suggest your website and doing so could be counter-productive because a later suggestion overwrites any earlier one.

Hello jimnoble,

I was trying to figure out why our main website was removed from its respective category and I have a guess that it was down for 2 days in last year due to some technical issues at the hosting company's end and your crawler might have tried to access it (website) at that time. This could be the only possible reason that I can think of. :icon_idea

Please tell me what to do as I've already submitted it once again yesterday in the same category. Can you recover the old listing or I was right in my decision to resubmit it. Would I be punished for re-submission?

Please Guide...

With best regards,
