timato Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 With the new developments in web technology, we are increasingly using web applications as opposed to installed software. Not only are these web applications accessible from anywhere, many of them are also free. However, not everybody is aware of these free, online alternatives to desktop software. It seems only natural for the directory to include a first-level category for web applications. What do you think?

timato Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Is is possible you may have overlooked this category? Please visit: http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Web_Applications/ Thanks for reminding me, I did see that category, but it is not as comprehensive as it could be. For example, Google Docs is not included, nor would it fit within any of the current subcategories of the Web Applications category. Maybe we could add some more subcategories?
Editall/Catmv makrhod Posted March 2, 2009 Editall/Catmv Posted March 2, 2009 A great many categories are not as comprehensive as they could be, and are simply awaiting the attentions of a volunteer interested in building them up. You could help by suggesting worthwhile sites, or by applying to become a volunteer yourself (one of the smaller subcategories of http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Web_Applications/ would be fine for a new editor). Subcategories are created when there are enough listed sites to justify them, and when editors agree that they would be useful. If you would like to participate in this process, we would be glad of your help! FAQ about becoming a volunteer ODP editor. I edit for the ODP and support those guidelines at all times, but my opinions are my own.
timato Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Looks like I'll be participating then! I submitted an application to edit Web Applications > Personal Information Managers. I also submitted a URL to the free storage category. We'll see how it goes
firestorm Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 It is nice to hear that you are interested in being a part of the editing team. I wish you luck. Firestorm ODP Editor This is an editor comment and not an official ODP statement.
