cliffaddy Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I notice that some categories give the ID of the editor, others say "Volunteer to edit this category", and others say nothing at all. I can understand why an editor might not want to be identified on the page, but why does the call to volunteer message appear? According to a recent post, there are no categories without editors. The particular category I'm interested in has over 100 entries, but that message is what prompted me to send in an application. I thought help was needed, but the more I read this forum, perhaps not? Cliff
jimnoble Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 We can always use more help. Some categories have editor applications disabled because they're too large or otherwise unsuitable for new editors. Some categories that probably should be closed to new editors are still open to them. We fix such issues as we discover them. The category you've requested is rather large for a new editor but it's attainable with an excellent application. Generally, it's better to aim a little lower to begin with and request further permissions as your editing skills grow.
cliffaddy Posted April 24, 2009 Author Posted April 24, 2009 Well, I'm not interested in being an editor for the glory of it It seems that a lot of people just want to be an editor, any editor. I applied because I saw a category that I'm very familiar with, in an area where I live. I also saw a category that is missing a lot of very good photographers while listing sites that, quite frankly, aren't very good. If you don't need help in that category, then I'll be on my way Thanks for replying. Cliff
jimnoble Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 If you don't need help in that category, then I'll be on my wayIt must be my funny British accent because I suggested no such thing . Some volunteer will process your application in time. If you haven't heard anything two weeks after your application, by all means bump this thread and enquire.
cliffaddy Posted April 24, 2009 Author Posted April 24, 2009 Sorry, Jim, wasn't trying to be snide. I was just addressing your comment that perhaps I should "aim lower", which I presume meant a smaller category. I was just trying to convey that there are no smaller categories that I'd feel qualified to contribute to. Wedding photographers in Florida is a terminal category, it's what I know, and it's all I'd be able to help with. If you were to break Florida into regions (which, personally, I think would be a good idea), I'll take the NE. Probably only a few dozen of us up here. I'm sure you need editors in lots of areas, I'm just not qualified and, like I said, I don't want to "be an editor", I just wanted to volunteer where it appeared there was a need. If there's a need there, great. If not, that's OK too. Cliff
Editall/Catmv makrhod Posted April 24, 2009 Editall/Catmv Posted April 24, 2009 there are no smaller categories that I'd feel qualified to contribute to ... it's what I know, and it's all I'd be able to help with.Oh I'm sure this can't be true. Most people have hobbies, favourite authors, pets, holiday destinations, craft projects, health concerns, charities, historical periods, environmental issues, their local area etc etc in which they have an interest. Any of those topics would have categories of a suitable size for a new editors, and there are thousands of them which would certainly benefit from someone with an interest in finding worthwhile sites. Once an editor has shown that they can be relied on to apply the editing guidelines correctly, they are encouraged to apply for other, larger categories, so it could become your goal to gain enough experience to edit in the Florida category you mention. FAQ about becoming a volunteer ODP editor. I edit for the ODP and support those guidelines at all times, but my opinions are my own.
