graphicdesigner Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Just a thought, but the system of ODP that used to work on a lower volume of site submissions seems to be in a complete mess, top 10 google results are filled with dmoz listed companies which maybe out of date, more progressive companies have to wait years to get listed on dmoz and claim their rifghtful place in the top 10, how can this been seen as a autonomous view of the web world when it's not even up to date? Google needs to pump money into dmoz to get everything flowing in order to keep it's status as the world's best search engine. I suggest that someone design a portal that each web page pops into which can be crossed reviewed by the public so that the web becomes self governing and sites meet public approval 'en mass' and not by the selected few. Sorry to rant :-) Cheers, Matt.
Meta nea Posted May 28, 2009 Meta Posted May 28, 2009 Google does not own, fund, or subsidize the ODP in any way. The AOL "owns" the directory, which means that they own the servers and employ staff to do the technical maintenance -- the editors are not paid by anybody, we do it out of love for the job and pure interest. Google and several hundred other sites use our data, which they are free to do as long as they attribute it properly; some of the data users (Google included) aren't that brilliant at updating, so if you want the current directory it's always a good idea to go straight to http://dmoz.org rather than through one of the external data users. graphicdesigner Posted May 28, 2009 Author Posted May 28, 2009 Thanks for the clarification, didn't mean to annoy. Cheers, Matt.
The Old Sarge Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 -- the editors are not paid by anybody, we do it out of love for the job and pure interest. I do it as penance for transgressions in a previous life. The Old Sarge War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. magomags Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 *laughs* Google is among one of the search engines that doesn't use ODP for any of it's listings anymore. Seriously, much of the information is out of date, and some categories don't even get updated anymore. And since AOL owns it why don't they actually get volunteers that show up more then once a year? *sits back and thinks* Oh, I know... Because they don't really care. They just want the prestige of saying they own this relic of internet nostalgia.
chaos127 Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 and since AOL owns it why don't they actually get volunteers that show up more then once a year? And how exactly do you propose that they go about that, given that the editors are volunteers?
The Old Sarge Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 *laughs* Google is among one of the search engines that doesn't use ODP for any of it's listings anymore. My experience with Google, ODP and my own Web sites indicates just the opposite. The Old Sarge War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. ultimateweb Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 Dmoz isn't making any money out of this if im right and are not trying to. No one is getting paid for this if im right.
Meta pvgool Posted June 21, 2009 Meta Posted June 21, 2009 You are right. DMOZ does not make any money and is not trying to do so. Suggesting a website is free, using the data is free, no advertisements, no payed listings. All editors are volunteers who do not get payed anything. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
