theglow Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Hi there, We run the web site We were located inside: http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Business_and_Economy/Industries/Wholesale/ but not anymore! When you do a search for glow sticks, we still come up in the search ranks in dmoz, and the directory stated next to the listing indicates the above url. We wanted to be moved to a more relevant directory: http://www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Toys_and_Games/Novelty/Glow_in_the_Dark/ The funny thing is, I can't for the life of me remember actioning this move, I'm getting a bit forgetful you could say. My question is, does it look like it will appear in the 2nd directory? Strange how it still shows in the results. Thanks Gareth
theglow Posted June 25, 2009 Author Posted June 25, 2009 Apologies there, I have actually found my web site in a completely different category, not complaining though I guess the search results take some time to update! I'm not sure though why I can't get inside the glow in the dark category, I think I have been trying on and off since 2004, strange because its more relevant than the other two categories I have been in. Any ideas?
Meta windharp Posted June 25, 2009 Meta Posted June 25, 2009 I guess the search results take some time to update! True. Search data is updated roughly weekly, and due to ongoing technical problems it can currently be significantly more than that. The current date of the search database is displayed at the bottom of each search result page. Curlie Meta/kMeta Editor windharp
Meta pvgool Posted June 25, 2009 Meta Posted June 25, 2009 > I'm not sure though why I can't get inside the glow in the dark category, Maybe because your site does not match the guidelines for that category or else because no editor has yet reviewed the site in that category. > I think I have been trying on and off since 2004, That could also be the reason. We clearly ask you to suggest a website only ONCE to the ONE best category. Try to much and you will be seen as a spammer. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
theglow Posted June 25, 2009 Author Posted June 25, 2009 I wasn't aware the guidelines in the glow in the dark category were any different to any other category. It's quite obviously a more relevant cat for my web site.

It's quite obviously a more relevant cat for my web site. It is ofcourse not about glow in the dark. You are asking for Shopping. Did you read the guidelines for Shopping? My answer was "situation A or else situation B". If situation A is not true it will be situation B. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
theglow Posted June 25, 2009 Author Posted June 25, 2009 With all due respect, I don't understand what your trying to say. I didn't read the guidelines for shopping because I didn't request the shopping category. Are you saying because its a shopping web site about glow in the dark, it deserves to go into a shopping category rather than a glow in the dark category? I'm not so sure about that. Actually 99% if not 100% of the web sites in the glow in the dark category are shopping web sites.
Meta hutcheson Posted June 25, 2009 Meta Posted June 25, 2009 If you're right--and you may well be--it sounds like other sites might need to be moved to Shopping (or perhaps the whole category does.) Since the beginning, the general trend has been to move retail sites (and categories) to Shopping, rather than to allow them to be scattered throughout the other top-level categories.
Meta pvgool Posted June 26, 2009 Meta Posted June 26, 2009 With all due respect, I don't understand what your trying to say. Strange in your first posting you wrote "We wanted to be moved to a more relevant directory: http://www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Toys_an...w_in_the_Dark/" That is clearly Shopping. Everything below is just a specification of what the website is selling. And all these categories must follow the Shopping guidelines. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. Meta nea Posted June 26, 2009 Meta Posted June 26, 2009 It is not a one-or-the-other situation. A website that offers items for sale (and includes an online shopping cart, or information about how to order) can be listed in a category under Shopping/, provided it meets the requirements for unique content, and provided it ships internationally (for historical reasons, US sites are excempt from the international rule, they can be included if they ship to several US states.) A website based in the UK, that qualifies for inclusion in the Shopping/ category tree, can also be listed in the Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom category tree, such as Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Business_and_Economy/Shopping. (I don't know where your site is listed, and this is a general rule in any case, but I use the UK as an example because you used to be listed in a UK category and possibly still are.) There are many sites that can be listed both based on geography and subject matter; because different editors work in different parts of the directory, sites are usually not listed in all eligible categories at the same time, though. Your site has obviously been considered eligible for listing (based on your post 2 above ) and using the information you have been given by me and others you should be able to work out if it's eligible for listing in Shopping/Toys_and_Games/Novelty/Glow_in_the_Dark/ in addition to where it already resides. theglow Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 Strange in your first posting you wrote "We wanted to be moved to a more relevant directory: http://www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Toys_an...w_in_the_Dark/" That is clearly Shopping. Everything below is just a specification of what the website is selling. And all these categories must follow the Shopping guidelines. ok, a bit of confusement on my behalf, the category we want to be listed in (the glow in the dark category) is actually a shopping web site, which is a bonus in light of what has been said. It was PVGOOL's post which confused me It is ofcourse not about glow in the dark. You are asking for Shopping. Did you read the guidelines for Shopping? My answer was "situation A or else situation B". If situation A is not true it will be situation B. Seeing as the site in question is a shopping site for glow in the dark products which ships internationally, unlike quite a few UK sites in that category. We are already in a shopping cat: http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/Toys_and_Games/ So if we follow the shopping guidelines in this category then surely we are following the shopping guidelines in the glow in the dark shopping category, right? And to reiterate, we ship internationally. Thank you nea for your post also. From what you have said i'm 100% sure that we meet all those guidelines you mentioned for being eligble for Shopping/Toys_and_Games/Novelty/Glow_in_the_Dark/ and I have absolutely no problem being in two categories (uk and general). So with all that in mind do you think i'm likely to make it into Shopping/Toys_and_Games/Novelty/Glow_in_the_Dark/ ? Thanks for all your input guys, much appreciated.
jimnoble Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 So with all that in mind do you think i'm likely to make it into Shopping/Toys_and_Games/Novelty/Glow_in_the_Dark/ If you've suggested it to there, then some editor will review it there but we don't know who or when that might be. We won't give an opinion here because we'd have to review it to do so - something that's against this forums T&C. This thread seems to have run its course. Closing. Please don't start another one on the same topic.
