Yahoo! Geocities is closing down on Octobar 25, 2009. Any action plans form dmoz teams to handle tons (may be millions of) of dead links? :confused:

We are already working on replacing those that we can. I think it's not much risk to predict that the remaining listings will be removed from public view by one of our automated processes after geocities stopped working, and checked on later.

If you know any replacements for listed URLs that will go down shortly, please hand in an update request.

This isn't that unusual, although geocities is one of the larger sitehosts to drop dead. The mechanisms to handle these things have been around for years. (In fact, the ODP may have been the first major directory to systematically and periodically check links. Certainly we were doing it before Yahoo was.)

I've tried to bookmark all the sites in my categories that are/were hosted by GeoCities. I've already made an attempt to remove any that are down. Whenever I sign on to edit, I search the major SEs to see if I can "locate" any sites that have changed hosts. (My categories are mostly by real people using their real, individual names, so it's pretty easy to do.) Any sites that remain on my watchlist for an extended period (albeit arbitrary) without being "relocated" by search will be dropped altogether.

And as Windharp said, the automated processes are helpful in keeping up.

The Old Sarge

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

There is an ongoing effort to replace as many of the geocities url's as possible before they get taken down. If you know of any with new url's, you can post them in the QC Thread here...

Old url --> New url
