pwillener Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Anyone knows what's happening at Chefmoz.org ? It has been a few weeks now that I cannot do anything in there; all I get is Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@dmoz.org and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. The Chefmoz forums only return a blank page.
Meta windharp Posted December 4, 2009 Meta Posted December 4, 2009 Actually I thought the problems had been resolved some time ago. At least that was what Marcel wrote. Just tried: I can login, but am unable to get below country level. Forums are down for me as well. Curlie Meta/kMeta Editor windharp
RZ Admin Elper Posted December 5, 2009 RZ Admin Posted December 5, 2009 Out of the frying pan... It appears that there was an initial problem, it was fixed, but it seems to have gone wrong again... Word is that recovery is ongoing. Fingers crossed. :chef: elper {moz}:curlie: All opinions expressed are my own, and do not necessarily represent the official point of view of the administration of either this forum or the directory.
Editall/Catmv makrhod Posted December 13, 2009 Editall/Catmv Posted December 13, 2009 Looks like it's still ongoing...Well yes, it's only been a few days. In the ODP we have been waiting nearly 3 years for many things to be fixed after the AOL server crash of 2006, so patience is strongly advised. FAQ about becoming a volunteer ODP editor. I edit for the ODP and support those guidelines at all times, but my opinions are my own.
alabaster Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Still down ... Still no change at chefmoz. I note that the restore point used after the latest crash was November 2007. Although it may not be possible, for technical and/or resource reasons, to re-establish full editing and forum functions, wouldn't it at least be possible to use a more recent restore point? It's hard to believe that Chefmoz was not fully backed up in the intervening 2 years. All the work of Chefmoz editors since November 2007 is currently invisible to users - and that is, to say the least, a very frustrating experience for the editors involved.
rcontrera Posted February 21, 2010 Posted February 21, 2010 I got this from Marcel in early January: Staff assures me that it is not dead. They have promised that it will be restored (and there are even plans for an improved ChefMoz 2.0). However, all current staff resources are working on the Dmoz 2.0 rollout right now. I think that the issues that caused the current outage are relatively difficult for staff to fix. Moreover, in November, AOL announced "voluntary" layoffs of 1/3 of their staff, which I assume can't be helping the situation. Staff haven't given me any time frame for a fix. I'll pass along any information I get from staff. Regards, Marcel I hope they get it done soon ... got an editing "Jonz"!
pwillener Posted April 18, 2010 Author Posted April 18, 2010 Since it has been down now for more than half a year, I have started unlisting chefmoz references in the ODP. I suggest other editors will do the same in their areas.
RZ Admin Elper Posted April 18, 2010 RZ Admin Posted April 18, 2010 This issue is probably best discussed in our internal forums... elper {moz}:curlie: All opinions expressed are my own, and do not necessarily represent the official point of view of the administration of either this forum or the directory.
rcontrera Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 What internal forum ... you mean on Chefmoz? It's broken ... remember?
jimnoble Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Not all chefmoz editors have access to ODP's internal fora
motsa Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 I think elper was referring to pwillener's comment that he was delisting Chefmoz listings in the directory (something unrelated to actually editing at Chefmoz).
RZ Admin Elper Posted May 11, 2010 RZ Admin Posted May 11, 2010 I was... :o elper {moz}:curlie: All opinions expressed are my own, and do not necessarily represent the official point of view of the administration of either this forum or the directory.
rcontrera Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 OK ... all that said ... is Chefmoz a dead project?
strangerer Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 True, as it is it took me a couple of rounds with google to find this discussion so I could know what is going on. Hope Chefmoz comes back. It ain't perfect but still has possibilities. Not all chefmoz editors have access to ODP's internal fora
gizmoguy Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 True, as it is it took me a couple of rounds with google to find this discussion so I could know what is going on. Hope Chefmoz comes back. It ain't perfect but still has possibilities. It looks fine to me.
rcontrera Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 It looks fine to me. No ... Chefmoz is broken. If you try to do anything you get nothing but server errors.
gizmoguy Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 No ... Chefmoz is broken. If you try to do anything you get nothing but server errors. Ah, my bad. I only browsed existing listings.
sahbbg Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 I believe AOL is aware of this, but it's low priority compared to the DMOZ upgrade.
rcontrera Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 OK ... it has been down for over a year. Can we say that it is a dead duck and the powers that be don't really care about that project anymore?
Meta pvgool Posted December 21, 2010 Meta Posted December 21, 2010 The powers still care. But they have limited resources available and those have been spend on DMOZ. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
edwardp7 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 The site came up for me just now. Looks good.
Sparky Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 The site came up for me just now. Looks good. It may look good, but it's an obsolete version from 2007. All data added after 2007 (representing literally thousands of person-hours) has been lost. Most important, the site isn't functional. You can see an existing (i.e., 2007) restaurant listing; however, you can't add a restaurant, add a review, update restaurant information, etc., etc., etc. I'm extremely ticked because it displays some personal information that I intentionally deleted; it got put back when the site reverted to the 2007 data, and there seems to be nobody I can contact to get it removed. I'm about ready to send a cease and desist letter to AOL.
RZ Admin lisagirl Posted February 17, 2011 RZ Admin Posted February 17, 2011 Hi all: I'm sorry to say that we've confirmed that ChefMoz is dead. Because AOL has limited resources, they chose to devote them all to dmoz.org rather than chefmoz.org, which is a sensible though very sad decision. The only thing they could say was that perhaps at some point they might have the resources to develop it, but that sounds like a long shot. I guess this doesn't come as much of a surprise, considering it's been so long already that we've been unable to do anything. But hearing it confirmed is still hard.
