Quality of a certain category on Dmoz

Hi after Applying and refused to be an editor due to the very poor listing quality of the following Category:-

 

http://www.dmoz.org/Sports/Motorsports/Auto_Racing/Tracks/Europe/Germany/

 

Is there any chance an editor can make it a priority as the area has gone through some major renovation and the listed sites are either defunct or not up to date.

 

Any editor who needs any information on the current sites is welcome to contact me, As I have done some extensive research of this particular category.

The listed sites all work fine for me.

 

Few editors visit this forum and it's not likely that one interested in Motorsports will see your plea. All editors are volunteers who edit where they wish, when they wish and as much as they wish within the constraints of their permissions. We have no schedules or systems to force people to do work that they don't volunteer to do. ODP is not primarily a free listing service for website owners and it does not attempt to process their listing suggestions within the time scales desired by them.

I have never heard of the current quality of a category to be a reason to reject an editor application. Are you sure that was the reason provided?

Applications are rejected because of the quality of the application itself.

I doubt there will be such a change. Atleast not on request.

We don't 'let applications through'; we accept acceptable ones.

 

To be acceptable:

 

The applicant must be pretty fluent in the category's language.

The applicant must be completely honest.

The applicant must provide 2 or 3 (3 preferred) unlisted examples suitable for the category.

The applicant must make some attempt to write guidelines compliant titles and descriptions for them (we don't expect perfection).

From my perspective, I have no reason to believe the listed sites are defunct or not up to date.

 

Oh, I know some total stranger has made some kind of vague insinuation to that effect ... but you wouldn't believe what I've heard from perfect strangers. (I didn't believe it either....)

 

OK, so how do you make a statement like that, so that it can be believed?

 

Simple. Skip the vague insinuations, or tell them to your local marines. Here, we focus on facts. So (1) find some facts, some actual specific listings that are truly defunct, and (2) report that actual specific information in the appropriate way (in the "Quality Feedback" forum.)

 

Now, the issue of "obsolete" listings is not so easily handled. We hear this a lot--most often we hear it from fly-by-night scam artists who can't afford to remain at one address for more than 2 or 3 weeks for fear of the police, and cannot imagine how a six-month-old website could still be relevant. Now, for me, currently preparing a 90-year-old book about 900-year-old poetry for online publication, the English language doesn't provide an adequate way of expressing the contempt I feel for that attitude. But perhaps (probably!) that wasn't what you meant.

 

So go back and ask yourself, what DID you mean? What is it about information that makes it "obsolete" as opposed to "archival"? Once you've figured that out, you'll be ready to provide some USEFUL feedback (in the "quality assurance" forum).

 

And you'll have a better idea of what editors do, if you're interested in giving still more help.

On the editor application a number of questions is asked.

The applicant should answer all these questions completely and according to the truth.

Leaving out certain information, telling something that is not true or trying to disguish the truth is not acceptable.
