Hallo,

two weeks ago I got the confirmation that my application as editor was successful.

I tried to login - but it did not work. It still does not work. I posted my problem in the German forum and an admin resetted my password, but it did not help.

I think there is a bigger technical problem.

I have already tried any possible variant of my password and also used the "forgot password" function. My user name and password are correct.

Any ideas? Can anybody help me?

Thanks!

I'm sorry you're having problems.

I've reset your password.

I asked our systems to send you a password reminder but you were already sent one recently.

I've changed your status on this forum to Editor.

If your password has more than 8 characters, what happens if you try to log in at http://www.dmoz.org/ with just the first 8?

Can you log in to http://forums.dmoz.org/forum/ which is on a different server?

If neither of those suggestions helps, please bump this thread.

It would be usefull to know what "it did not work" means. What kind of error do you get.

I checked and your account is active.

I don't know how you try to login. Try to login through the mainpage of dmoz. http://www.dmoz.org and than "editor login" link at the top.

It is essential that you type your editor name (always lowercase) and password correctly (can have upper and lowercase).

If you still can not login please tell us the exact error message you got.

<added> as so often jim is faster, and he, as a meta, can see and do more than me, as an editall

I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.

Wow, thank you for the quick answers, that is amazing.

The problem still exists and I start to doubt my sanity.

I tried to login on several pages, also those you named, Jim.

I checked my user name and my password several times, I checked the emails I got from DMOZ with the login details, I even used copy&paste, but it still does not work.

Really, I use the right username and password and spell them correctly. My password is only 8 characters long.

The error message I get is simply "Authorization required":

I enter my data in the login window, click "ok", then the login window disappears for a sec and reappears just the way it had looked before with empty cells.

The error message "Authorization Required" only appears when I click on "cancel".

The complete error message is "This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required.

Additionally, a 401 Authorization Required error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

It does not work with Mozilla nor with IE.

Thanks again for your help.

What you describe is a normal procedure when a wrong username or password is entered.

To be sure that the problem is not something on your side.

First questions:

- are there any other websites where you have to login

- do you have similar problems with these websites

- what is the security setting of IE (normal, high, low)

Than action:

- please clear the cache of your browser and try again

I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.

I've taken some fairly drastic action in the hope of kicking our servers into sanity.

I've just fired you and immediately reinstated you. This should cause our servers to do whatever they do when making an account work. (This has worked in the past)

Please let us know what happens when you try to log in now.

Hello there,

I am in!

The problem was, as I had presumed in the first place, but did not mention in this thread, that there was a German Umlaut in my password.

One of the German editors had the brilliant idea to use Opera, and it worked.

Thank you for all your efforts, I appreciate it,

best regards,

Birgit

Good to know.

I suggest that you change your password to one with unaccented Roman characters and just eight of them. That should help to avoid similar problems in the future.
