nbriggs Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 I recently applied for an Editor Position, and was denied, yet I'm honestly confused as to why. None of the possible reasons indicated to me were relevant, and I'd like to inquire as to the specific reason(s) for the non-acceptance. opendir - 24e1c0723e6256ed5f8f5118ec0dbbe1 -nbriggs
nbriggs Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 Question - Upon re-reviewing the denial, the Reviewer Comments suggested I "...choose a category of around 100 sites.." In Top: Regional: North America: United States: Arizona: Business and Economy - the suffix is 159 - Is the 159 parallel to the "sites" term? Thanks in advance!
Editall/Catmv makrhod Posted April 4, 2010 Editall/Catmv Posted April 4, 2010 On the instruction page for applying, the second point says Your chances of becoming an editor are greater if you apply for a small, underdeveloped category to start (generally categories with less than 100 sites)The number of sites listed in a category appears in brackets after the category name. FAQ about becoming a volunteer ODP editor. I edit for the ODP and support those guidelines at all times, but my opinions are my own.
jimnoble Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 You were sent and email and the reviewer comments at the bottom include The directory does not approve new editors for categories as large as this one. Is that not clear? It's generally best to start out with a category of 15-100 listings. Also, most websites are listed in their localities, not at state level. For this reason, editing at state level can be quite difficult. Check out the category's description linked at the top of the page.
nbriggs Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 I just wanted to make sure I was correctly correlating the numerical values contained within parentheses as defining the number of listings per a category. I thought I had submitted some examples with my application within a low population category, but I must have mis-read the listing number of the category I submitted for. One of my last I submissions had two examples that surely should have been locally indexed which the reviewer pointed out. My mistake. I'm reasonably sure my latest submission was properly correlative to both the region, and subject scope. Thanks for the assist.
nbriggs Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 If this last application submission get denied, I will cross check the category here first with you to ensure I'm properly identifying a low population segment.
Meta pvgool Posted April 4, 2010 Meta Posted April 4, 2010 "To big" can mean two things 1) to many listings - as jimnoble wrote "It's generally best to start out with a category of 15-100 listings." - this is something you can see yourself very easely, just look at the numbers but also 2) the scope of the category is to big - in Regional most websites are listed in the locality in which they have a physical presence, The only businesses listed at state level (like Arizona: Business and Economy) are those with premises in several localities. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
nbriggs Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 Understood. Well I got another denial with "The title of a site should be the business's name. Not a slogan, not hype, not a summary" and I to my knowledge there was no slogan used.
nbriggs Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 Submitted for the following: Top: Business: Business Services: Consulting: Research Services (77) Submission samples were double checked to exclude any form of slogan and be strictly based upon the company/organization name.
nbriggs Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 Question - If I'm interested in multiple areas, should I wait for acceptance into one (1) particular area, and then build from there? Or submit individual editor requests for each section? nb
jimnoble Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Wait. Editors are only allowed one account here. Once you've got some experience in your first category, you'll be able to request further permissions.
nbriggs Posted April 5, 2010 Author Posted April 5, 2010 Does anyone know if my application is still in process? To my knowledge there is still an application pending, but with all the activity, it's difficult to be sure. n
jimnoble Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 As the sticky Forum Guidelines - READ BEFORE POSTING thread says, we're happy to respond to status enquiries after 14 days have elapsed. If you haven't heard anything by 18th April, by all means bump this thread and ask again.
nbriggs Posted April 5, 2010 Author Posted April 5, 2010 Ahh. Gotcha. I will do that. I appreciate the patience in helping me align with the policies, and procedures.
nbriggs Posted April 20, 2010 Author Posted April 20, 2010 Hi JimNoble - you said to bump this thread again if I had not heard anything by the 18th of April, and it's the 18th of April and I've not heard anything. thanks! n
motsa Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 It's really helpful if you give us the information asked for in the Forum Guidelines - READ BEFORE POSTING thread, in the format requested (makes it much easier for someone to look for and find your application).
