Cancasa Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Hi all I made an application to become an editor recently and have since received an email stating that I was not accepted. It went on to say that it might have been the cause of any one of a number of things which were listed ie;improper disclosure, wrong section, listing etc...... I have checked the details and can see nothing wrong with the application. How can I get an answer as to the specifics of the rejection? I attempted to reapply but now I get the page for "request reinstatement of editor account" which I don't believe I have. Can anyone shed some light on this sequence of events as it seems a maze of red tape. Edit: The original application was in section Real Estate/By Region/Europe and then I had to reapply in another section as it no longer had the "become an editor" sign. The new section is Real Estate/Residential/Marketing and Advertising.
Meta pvgool Posted May 31, 2010 Meta Posted May 31, 2010 Hi Cancase, In a rejection email we either provide ony a list of common mistakes or in special circumstances we will write a specific reply. If you only got a list of common reasons you can be sure that one or more of these reasons are valid for your application. Being able to determine which of these are valid for you and to correct them can be seen as part of the application process. An editor will encounter such situations each day and he must be able to handle them by himself. > I attempted to reapply but now I get the page for "request reinstatement of editor account" which I don't believe I have. Than you either did check the box that you ware already an editor or (most probably) you did not check any of the answers for that question. If you do not check one of the two answers by default "yes" will be assumed. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
Cancasa Posted May 31, 2010 Author Posted May 31, 2010 Thanks pvgoo. I went back to the previous page and saw that the option you mentioned concerning the editor reinstatement was selected by default. The application has been resubmitted so I'll give an update as to what happens when I get the information. Your help is much appreciated.
motsa Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Edit: The original application was in section Real Estate/By Region/Europe and then I had to reapply in another section as it no longer had the "become an editor" sign.Because most real estate agents and agencies are listed at the locality level, a continent-level real estate category is a bad one for a new editor to start out in. The new section is Real Estate/Residential/Marketing and Advertising. Most Business/Real_Estate categories are also going to be poor choices for a new editor as moist real estate marketing sites would be listed at an appropriate geographic level in Regional.

Thanks motsa, can you give me some help as to how to go about this. I presume my site will have to correspond with the section I apply for so it's pretty hard to find many other sections for it. Any tips/help to get this corrected would be great. Edit:here is the url of the site: http://no urls please
Cancasa Posted May 31, 2010 Author Posted May 31, 2010 Apologies for the url, just acted without thinking. Since reapplying,I have since received notification of a second rejection. Have to say the response time is incredible though. Third time lucky perhaps.......lol

If you really want to be an editor to help out, you could apply for a category whose topic interests you but in which you have no vested interest.
Meta pvgool Posted May 31, 2010 Meta Posted May 31, 2010 I presume my site will have to correspond with the section I apply for so it's pretty hard to find many other sections for it. Ehh. No. Only the 3 example websites that you provide must fit in the category you apply for. We do not care where your own website(s) could be listed (unless you ofcourse use the website as an example). <added>Motsa must have been typing her reply when I started. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
Cancasa Posted May 31, 2010 Author Posted May 31, 2010 You don't have to apply for a category where your site would belong. If you really want to be an editor to help out, you could apply for a category whose topic interests you but in which you have no vested interest. Ok,so as an example,I apply for category in Alternative Health which has no conflict with my website and is something I know a great deal about, but my site will be accepted in the category of Real Estate. Is that correct?
Meta pvgool Posted May 31, 2010 Meta Posted May 31, 2010 Ok,so as an example,I apply for category in Alternative Health which has no conflict with my website and is something I know a great deal about, but my site will be accepted in the category of Real Estate. Is that correct? Applying to become an editor and getting your website listed are two completely seperate actions. When you are an editor you are allowed to list any website, including your own website, as long as that website meets the DMOZ guidelines and only in the category of the website's subject. You should want to become an editor for the benefit of DMOZ not to list your own website(s). People only interested in listing their own website in most cases will be rejected as an editor. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
Cancasa Posted May 31, 2010 Author Posted May 31, 2010 I agree with you pvgoo but if I'm going to be truly helping develop a section of the directory then the facility of site admission is a welcome one. Thought it would be best if I were honest with my thoughts on the subject rather than being deceptive. Nevertheless,I've applied for an alternative therapy section which I'm au fait with so whatever happens now,you can't say I haven't tried. Thanks anyway as I have an uncanny feeling that another rejection is on the way lol.....
motsa Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Becoming an editor does not give your site preferential treatment, i.e. becoming an editor of an alternative health category would not entitle you to have your site reviewed more quickly in the category where it is waiting. As pvgool says, they are two completely different and unrelated things.
Cancasa Posted May 31, 2010 Author Posted May 31, 2010 Thanks motsa, just received a reply to the application. Again, incredibly responsive system to the application but alas "Rejected" again. Third time unlucky indeed,or was it four, running out of toes and fingers already. Best of luck to you all and thanks for helping me pass the time.
Meta pvgool Posted May 31, 2010 Meta Posted May 31, 2010 Third time unlucky indeed, .... Being accepted as an editor does not involve luck. We are looking for a few simple things an an editor - show a basic understanding of the guidelines (provide 3 websites that fit the category and write decent titles and descriptions) - being honest (strangely enough some people are not honest) - being complete (provide answers to all questions) All 3 very simple things to do (atleast I think they are not to difficult) I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
Cancasa Posted May 31, 2010 Author Posted May 31, 2010 Ouch, play nice now.... So to recap, what you meant to say to me was; -you don't show basic understanding(the 3 sites you provided were not just to be used as examples but real unsubmitted sites with decent titles and descriptions. -honesty,what's that?Never heard of it.Are you from this planet? -You're not well rounded enough,a bit square but certainly not rounded.Intelligence is obviously not one of your finer qualities. All 3 very simple things of which you are incapable of. Please insert smilie here for confirmation.....
Meta pvgool Posted May 31, 2010 Meta Posted May 31, 2010 So to recap, what you meant to say to me was; No that is not what I was saying. I just gave you the 3 things we are looking for in an application. As I did not look at your applications I do not know why they were rejected. As I wrote before being able to determine what you did wrong and to correct these mistakes is part of the application process. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
