nickroylance Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 At Genesis Publications we are thrilled to have our website listed on the DMOZ directory. For the past 35 years Genesis has published limited edition books primarily about art, music & photography (a few sports & historical titles too). At present, the website appears in the "Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: Business and Economy: Publishing" category. Genesis has not published books about business or economics, so the Genesis listing would be better suited for, say, the "Business: Publishing and Printing: Publishing: Books: Arts" section. How do we go about suggesting this to the editors at DMOZ? The listing is great, it is just a case of positioning. With thanks for any advice on making this adjustment. Nick
Meta pvgool Posted June 6, 2010 Meta Posted June 6, 2010 "Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: Business and Economy: Publishing" This category does not mean that the website is from a company that publishes books about B&E. It means the company is a Business located in the UK and it is a publishing company. If you are located in the UK it is a good category. But. A website can in some case be listed twice. Once in Regional (the current listing) and once in a topical category. "Business: Publishing and Printing: Publishing: Books: Arts" is such a topical category. You are allowed to suggest the website in the most appropriate category of Publishing: Books. And it won't harm the current listing. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
cpfchris Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 I tried emailing an editor on this but encountered the known 502 Proxy error, and clicking on the link in the error message results in a "bad email" message. So, I don't know if it went through. (I tried sending to both Shruti and Nocturnal.) I was updating my client's DMOZ listing today and noticed that they aren't in the appropriate category. They are currently in Business: Business Services: Fire and Security: Security: Investigation: Records Research. While "Records Research" is applicable, the official Description that much more accurately fits what SingleSource Services is all about is for the "Employment" (sub-)category under "Investigation". Please let me know if there is something else I need to do to have this reviewed. (For example, I can email someone the URL of the site in question, or I can post it here.) Many thanks, Chris
Meta pvgool Posted June 29, 2010 Meta Posted June 29, 2010 If you think a listing needs updating than there is only one (1) option. Go to the category and click the "update listing" link at the top of the page. There is no need to email an editor, nor is there a reason to post details here at R-Z. An editor will look at your request and at the website and decide if your request is valid. I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.

I made my updates to Title and Description thru the 'update listing' link. But, I also noticed that the category was incorrect. According to the 'Updating Your Site' section of the 'Add' page, "If you are dissatisfied with the category in which your site is listed, you may send an e-mail to an editor for the category explaining your disagreement." That is what I was attempting to do when I encountered the (apparently ongoing) proxy error. When that didn't appear to work, I went looking for a way to report it and found a link to Resource-Zone. I registered and read most of the posts on the thread about the proxy error. Since I had nothing new to add but my own frustration, I looked for this thread instead. So,... are you now telling me to go back and put my category change request into the box at the bottom of the 'Update URL' page? Or,...? Thx
Meta pvgool Posted June 30, 2010 Meta Posted June 30, 2010 I looked at the update request pages The first page states Specifically, this Update Listing form should be used to Replace an old URL with a new URL when it has changed.Correct spelling and grammatical errors in the site's title and description.Suggest a new title when the title on the site has changed.Suggest a new description when the scope of the site has changed.Suggest a category more appropriate for this site I could not find any reference to contacting an editor on bothg the first or second form nor on the confirmation page. But I found the text you are refering to on http://www.dmoz.org/add.html This text seems incorrect to me. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. So,... are you now telling me to go back and put my category change request into the box at the bottom of the 'Update URL' page? yes, that is the best option as the request will be seen by many editors and not only the one you emailed I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.
cpfchris Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 I must've skipped right past that bullet, since I had already read the other page and didn't expect to make category change requests from the Update Listing page. It is odd that there seems to be nearly-contradictory instructions on that topic. Hm. Well, at least now it's known and changes can be made to make it more clear. I'll go make that request, now. Thanks for the assistance, Chris
cryp705p0r1d1um Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Hi, I am needing my client's website updated, it is CDI College (URL Removed) There are 2 listings for it currently... I updated the listing in Ontario with a new description as the current one is not accurate. Can you please make sure it gets updated? I also would like it to be moved to the category .../Reference/Education/Colleges_and_Universities/North_America/Canada/ As for the other listing, it can be left at your discretion, its my understanding that a website only be listed in here once. Thanks cryp7
motsa Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 An editor will review your update request -- if it meets our guidelines, then the editor will make the changes. You don't need to stop in here and ask for the request to be reviewed. As for moving the site to another category, an editor will also review that request (I presume you included that in your update request) and action if it appropriate.
