swyzzlemark Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 I periodically search DMOZ for my site, suggested about a 1 1/2 yrs ago, to see if it has been included - which produces no results. I just did a google search for "dmoz" and <the site name>. Strangely, that produced a web page that appears to contain dmoz listing information for my company. I can provide the link to the page if you'd like. Is my site actually in the DMOZ database but producing no results? The DMOZ category on the page is empty. I wonder if that's why a DMOZ search produces no results? It looked like this, except I have removed the identifying information: Dmoz: YES Dmoz Tile: <my company name> Dmoz Description: <my company description> Dmoz Category: <empty category> Also, I recently re-submitted the site, thinking something may have gotten lost.
Meta pvgool Posted October 21, 2010 Meta Posted October 21, 2010 DMOZ search is not properly equiped to find a website. The best way to find a site is to search for domain.tld ( like dmoz.org ) do not include "http:// " , "www" or anything after the tld I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If you have anything to ask please use the forum.

I did the search as domain.tld and also domain. I'm sure I've also tried www and http://, etc., but never get a result. If you want to try it, use the first seven letters of my username, either with or without .com appended. I take it by your response that you believe the search should have produced a response. I have two specific questions: 1) is my company actually in the database? 2) if so, does the record include a category? My concern is that if it is in the database and has no category it will never be found.
jimnoble Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 I take it by your response that you believe the search should have produced a response. It probably did - but search can sometimes be a few days out of sync with the directory. pvgool was merely pointing you at your best option. I'm sure you've read the Discontinuation of site status checks announcement at the top of this forum so you already know that we aren't going to do a specific status check for you.

And I see what you did wrong. Search for "yourname" and dmoz does bring up a number of sites that claim to put values on webistes. Most of these websites do a very bad job. If you want to use Google to serach for somthing in DMOZ you must use: "yourname" site:dmoz.org This will search only on DMOZ pages. And the resulty is: Your search - "yourname" site:dmoz.org - did not match any documents. Ofcourse I used your website name instead of "youname" I will not answer PM or emails send to me. If I understand correctly, doing a search for a domain and "dmoz" will produce sites with information represented as coming from dmoz that actually are not. Either searching on dmoz.org or doing a Google search for domain with site:dmoz.org is the correct way to find the listing. @jimnoble I had, in fact, read the Discontinuation of site status checks notice and understood completely. However, with the evidence pointing to my listing possibly being in limbo - that is, listed, but not findable - I saw no alternative. As a problem-solver, I'm sure you understand. Anyway, you both have been very helpful. We'll sit tight.
