Desmei Posted July 1, 2003 Posted July 1, 2003 Hi, I originally submitted www.betterhomesecurity.com to category: http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Home_Improvement/Hardware/Safety_and_Security/. This was months ago. I posted at this forum on 5/24 and received reply from "windharp" that it had not yet been reviewed, and it was waiting with a "handfull" of other sites. Since then I have resubmitted to: http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Emergency_Supplies/Security/, since my competitors are also listed in this category, and since this categroy has an editor, "iperactive". Could you give me a status update. Thanks.
brmehlman Posted July 1, 2003 Posted July 1, 2003 The site is listed in the second of the two categories you mention. Not because you resubmitted it, and not because that category has a listed editor, but because it was deemed to be a better fit there.
Alucard Posted July 1, 2003 Posted July 1, 2003 Looks like your original posting got deleted as part of the forum glitch we had. The URL has been approved for listing in http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Emergency_Supplies/Security/ it still awaits review in http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Home_Improvement/Hardware/Safety_and_Security/ a deeplink that got submitted to the first category was deleted. Thanks for your enquiry - if the site does not show up on the public pages yet it is due to our ongoing server upgrades. It will appear when these are complete.
Desmei Posted July 1, 2003 Author Posted July 1, 2003 Thank you for the replies. As you guessed, my site is not showing up in the public pages yet, but I'll keep my eyes open for when the upgrades are done. Thanks for providing this forum; Everyone knows how frustrating it is being in the dark on these things!
Desmei Posted July 31, 2003 Author Posted July 31, 2003 Hello Again, My site, www.betterhomesecurity.com, now appears when I do a search for "security stickers" http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=security+stickers, which is great, but it still does not appear when I visit the category it was approved for: http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Emergency_Supplies/Security/. Is this an oversight or is it because the upgrades/updates are not complete? Thanks!
Meta hutcheson Posted July 31, 2003 Meta Posted July 31, 2003 Is this an oversight ... No. editors add to one database, and all the propagation is handled automatically. ... or is it because the upgrades/updates are not complete? Doubtless this is it.
Desmei Posted August 15, 2003 Author Posted August 15, 2003 Hi, My site www.betterhomesecurity.com finally appeared in the category http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Emergency_Supplies/Security/ for a day or so, and then disappeared. Will it reappear or was it removed intentionally for some reason?
senox Posted August 15, 2003 Posted August 15, 2003 As far as I can see it's there on the public side. The URL is https://host35.ipowerweb.com/~betterho/
Desmei Posted August 15, 2003 Author Posted August 15, 2003 Thanks for your reply, the site is back. It was appearing when I did a search for my domain name, but then when I would click on the category it would not appear in the list. It was not an old, cached page that I was looking at either. I can't figure out why this would happen, unless DMOZ has something going on akin to the google dance, when updating. Anyway, thank you again for your response.
Meta hutcheson Posted August 15, 2003 Meta Posted August 15, 2003 Yes, you should probably be thinking in terms of a mozilla dance.
Desmei Posted March 11, 2004 Author Posted March 11, 2004 Status of URL change for www.betterhomesecurity.com This is a copy of a post that I made on 3/10/04. I was informed that I should not have started a new thread, so I am reposting here, in the original thread.---Thanks. My site is listed in http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Emergency_Supplies/Security/, as BetterHomeSecurity.com. The URL that it directs to is http://host35.ipowerweb.com/~betterho/. This is my host's server name/address for my index page. This is not the way I submitted it (I think this happened due to some links on my site that have since been changed). Around two months ago, I requested that the listed URL be changed to our real domain name: http://www.betterhomesecurity.com. (This is the exact same page that the link currently points to--just a different way of accessing it.) Can you tell me when this will be done? Thank you very much, Desmei P.S. Thanks for pointing me back to the original thread. I am sorry for posting incorrectly.
Meta nea Posted March 11, 2004 Meta Posted March 11, 2004 The betterhomesecurity.com URL will not be listed in the ODP - you can find the reason for this in http://dmoz.org/guidelines/include.html#redirects . I know it's not the answer you were looking for, but that is what our guidelines state. Curlie Meta and kMeta editor nea
Desmei Posted March 11, 2004 Author Posted March 11, 2004 No redirect The betterhomesecurity.com URL will not be listed in the ODP - you can find the reason for this in http://dmoz.org/guidelines/include.html#redirects[/url"] . I know it's not the answer you were looking for' date=' but that is what our guidelines state.[/quote'] I don't understand how this relates to my site. There is no redirect. My domain name is http://www.betterhomesecurity.com. This is not like a site that is a peronal web page hosted by someone's ISP. I have my own domain name(just click on the above link and you'll see), and I don't understand why you think of it as a redirection. Could you explain that for me? Thanks.

I have my own domain name(just click on the above link and you'll see), and I don't understand why you think of it as a redirection. Could you explain that for me? Thanks. Okay, I think I get it. Back in my own post #12 I said... "My site is listed in http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_G...plies/Security/, as BetterHomeSecurity.com. The URL that it directs to is http://host35.ipowerweb.com/~betterho/. This is my host's server name/address for my index page...." Maybe that's where the confusion came from? What I meant was.... I am listed with link text of BetterHomeSecurity.com. That link is set up as href="http://host35.ipowerweb.com/~betterho/". It should be set up as href="http://www.betterhomesecurity.com". If you go there you will see that there is no redirect. I am not sure why you can access the same page both ways, but I know if I want a page protected by SSL I have to link to https://host35.ipowerweb...etc. This does not mean that we reidirect. I own the domain name, just click on this link, http://www.betterhomesecurity.com/ to see that there is no redirect. Thanks.
thehelper Posted March 11, 2004 Posted March 11, 2004 As long as you can access it both ways we are going to list it like that. In its current state the url it is listed currently as is the only one we will list it as. Sorry.
Desmei Posted March 11, 2004 Author Posted March 11, 2004 I don't understand. I know your job isn't to help me understand, but... Is Ipowerweb the only host that has its customers accessible on two servers(or whatever is going on)? Why would the ODP have to list my site with the host35 server name instead of its true domain name? You do see that there is no redirect, right? You can do a whois and find all the info you need. There is nothing funny going on here. I guess I am just completely in the dark as to why this is a problem. 1) There is no redirection 2) I have a real domain name How is this any different than anyone else's site?
Alucard Posted March 11, 2004 Posted March 11, 2004 There appear to be two sites with the same content - they BOTH appear to be the "true" URL of the site. We can have no idea of the inner workings of your ISP. Therefore, we have chosen to list the host35 URL, since they appear to be equivalent. While you might not like this, while the setup is the way it is, there is nothing that you can do by continuing this discussion with us. If you want to change things, then you need to talk to your service provider. Thank you.
thehelper Posted March 11, 2004 Posted March 11, 2004 Nope, you host is not the only one that does it that way. Yahoo stores do it like that as well and the Yahoo site owners who we have to tell this very same thing to don't like it any better than you do. Sorry.

If you want to change things, then you need to talk to your service provider. Thank you. Thank you. I called my hosting company. The "host35/~betterho/" name was a temporary way of letting me access my root directoy while they were setting up my domain name way back when I got started. They never disabled this access. Now they are going to disable it for me, and that link on the ODP will go dead. (Probably in the next 24hrs) Should I resubmit the URL change now or after it goes dead? Do I need to resubmit the change at all? Should I repost after it goes dead? Please let me know the correct way to handle this Thank you very much for all the assistance. --Desmei

I thought the Yahoo stores don't have thier own domain names? (If they did why wouldn't they just set up their own stores?) Anyway, I understand what you mean, but this is a little different, see my last post. And thank you again.
Desmei Posted March 11, 2004 Author Posted March 11, 2004 over and out When the link goes dead PM me. Thanks a lot for all your help. --Desmei
