Report Hijacks, Dead Links, Inappropriate DMOZ Content, and other issues here ONLY

ODP has a general policy for content that it will and won't list at http://dmoz.org/guidelines/include.html

There are various types of sites allowed (sometimes only in specific areas), and the description of these is at http://dmoz.org/guidelines/site-specific.html

I mention the above links to help you decide if you've spotted something which doesn't belong.

---------------

Some sites (usually companies) change their content over the years and the descriptions and category locations have not kept up with the changes. Point us to those listings, and we'll re-review the site.

Some sites are blatant, money-making HIJACKS. Someone's domain expires and is snapped up by those who are trying to get people to visit casinos, porn sites, ebay, "distance learning" sites, shady pseudodrug sites ("herbal viagra!"), a nice-looking PPC (pay-per-click) directory or whatever else can make someone a few cents or bucks. Sometimes the intent is just linking trickery hoping to get Google to make a site jump to the top for some term or phrase. In any case, we want to know about all of these HIJACKS -- especially those which are PORN in a non-adult area of the directory.

Sometimes a company buys the URLs of other companies (or even nonrelated URLs) and then redirects you to or mirrors their site. This is a type of directory abuse typically practiced by those wanting multiple listings - although it could be entirely inadvertent. Tell us about any MIRRORS you see and we'll rereview those sites ASAP.

Finally, there is the ol' BAIT AND SWITCH. Site owner gets listed, says "yippee," and then goes and changes the some or all of the content to something unacceptable. Others are sneakier and decide to serve up some "nice and appropriate" page for those coming from dmoz.org (who are usually editors) but a "cruddy and otherwise inappropriate" page to everyone else, the public. We want to know if you ever find any sites like these.

You can report DEAD DOMAINS here as well as those which seem to be placeholder pages ("Coming soon!") since they're likely candidates for hijacking.

I was going to remove it, but it looks like someone beat me to it. It's gone, thanks.

Thanks very much, it has been moved out of the category. Very much appreciated!

Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here ONLY

Hi,

I noticed recently that there are several new affiliate sites begin added to your directory (http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Domain_Names/C/) which

are identical to each other and yet they were accepted. The sites are listed below:

Computers > Internet > Domain Names > C

www.cheap-domain-names.ws

Computers > Internet > Domain Names > C

www.cheap-discount-domain-names.biz

Computers > Internet > Web Design and Development > Hosting > C

www.cheap-domainregistration.com

As you could see, the above sites are all resellers of another company (GoDaddy.com) and their site content, directory structures are almost the same since they were generated with a common template. Aren't they considered duplicated or affiliate sites according to your policy? Just wondering...

Thank you very much for your input.

http://www.cheap-domain-names.ws/ and http://www.cheap-discount-domain-names.biz/ have both been removed from Computers: Internet: Domain Names: C already on July 5th. The only problem is that the public page hasn't been updated since, due to system works. But as soon as the category refreshes, those sites will not be listed any more.

http://www.cheap-domainregistration.com/ is still listed in Computers: Internet: Web Design and Development: Hosting: C. As I don't really know this business, would please another editor have a look into this one?

Yours,

Robert

Correction to my earlier post.

http://www.psrnurse.com/ is still a valid site.

Thanks

Just found another here which looks almost exactly the same as the ones above:

www.luckyregister.com

Found in: Computers: Internet: Domain Names: Name Search

Thanks for the tip.

As it happened, we'd already whacked that one, but the public page hadn't been updated.

Um, already been there, already done that, have the edit logs to prove it. Thwwwp! :D

But you're certainly on the right wavelength, even if the wrong time zone. Thanks again, and keep the eyes peeled.

Should I just keep my mouth shut until after the next update? ;) I wish I had access to find out what's already been edited, but alas, I do not. One of these days I'll get around to polishing my application - until then I'm just a member. LOL

Well, I admit if I were you, I'd get frustrated about this time and go work on something else until the databases were more up-to-date. But so long as you keep reporting them, we'll keep checking them. And in the meantime you're at least building a reputation for accurate reports.

You still haven't caught us. The editor of that category noticed the change on August 2nd and deleted the site listing.

Your next try please. (And thank you, though.)

Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here ONLY

Mr. Tipton or other ODP editor:

Colorado Marriages and Divorces Search website at

CO Marriages and Divorces (http://www.quickinfo.net/madi/comadi.html)

is no longer available.

It's still listed in the Open Directory at Open Directory Vital Records Listing

This site comes up FIRST in general searching for a number of Colorado Divorce terms and sort of gives ODP, as a research resource, a "bad name" as out-of-date.

Thank you for your review and assistance!

Sincerely,

Larry
