phantomize Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Malaysia/States_and_Federal_Territories/Pulau_Pinang/Travel_and_Tourism/Travel_Guides/ Penang The Cultured Pearl Of The Orient - The word "cultured" seems not to be in the official title, not that Penang might not be that way... Also, "sponsered" is a misspelling. Furthermore, there are a total of 11 instances of "sponsered" in the directory. Pictures of Penang - Seems this site should be under "Maps and Views". I don't believe "fullsome" is a word. Visit Penang - is almost entirely external links along with Amazon.com books for sale - very little content of its own. Wandesta's Travel Guides Penang - Domain currently parked. http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Malaysia/States_and_Federal_Territories/Pulau_Pinang/Travel_and_Tourism/Travel_Services/ Hotels Penang - This is purely an r24.org affiliated site for taking hotel reservations - not a real good travel services site. http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Malaysia/States_and_Federal_Territories/Pulau_Pinang/Guides_and_Directories/ Malaysian manufacturers trade portal. - Redirects to http://e-directory.com.my/. Title could use some help also. Penang : Pearl Of Orient - Pearl of the Orient. Penang Homepage - Looks like ought to be called PenangWeb, plus "penang" and "net" should both be capitalized. Penang Tour and the last entry are mirrors with the latter redirecting to the former. http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Malaysia/States_and_Federal_Territories/Pulau_Pinang/Weather/ Disciples, Penang, Malaysia, Catholic Bible Study for love of God - just doesn't sound like weather to me.
jeanmanco Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 #2466 - I'm still not inclined to remove the Ibas listings. Although it has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kroll Ontrack since January, so far there has been no change from the position when we last discussed this. The Kroll website does not contain the Ibas information. However I have added information to the Ibas description, so it is flagged as a subsidiary. #2467 dealt with, thanks. Needed a change of title and category, as well as description. #2468-#2471 dealt with, thanks. #2472 - It is not a problem for a site to have both a regional and topical listing. It's quite common in fact, as long as the site meets the criteria both for a topical and regional category. Both listings have now been updated to the new url. #2473 and #2474 dealt with, thanks. #2475 Computer Forensics is in fact mentioned on the site, under IT Solutions, but since they offer many services, I have made the description more general.

nanseamom Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 Misleading Info and Multiple listings Category: dmoz.org/Sports/Water_Sports/Surfing/Surf_Reports/Cams/ URL: http://www.pacificcoasttravelinfo.com 1. There are no live webcams and there have not been for years. 2. Where is the Surf report or info? 3. They own multiple sites no unique information and are simply designed to cross link to each other for increased Page Rank to generate Google Ad clicks and other advertising revenue. This website is owned/operated by Image Marketing Service as you can see at the bottom of their pages and on their website where they actually admit to this: http://www.imagemarketingservice.com/ The same operator creates almost identical sites for the purposes of cross linking. You can find crosslinks between them and can see that the information is duplicated and/or almost indentical to the other sites with whom they are affiliated. A couple of their other 'related' sites are: puertoescondidoinfo.com and puertoconnection.com
jeanmanco Posted May 4, 2006 Posted May 4, 2006 #2478 - This link was updated yesterday by another editor. The new link works fine.

phantomize Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 With regard to http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Singapore/Travel_and_Tourism/Travel_Guides/, Expatsingapore.com is available to me. Chinatown of Singapore, the 2nd entry, is about more than Chinatown. Title misleading, imo. The Real Destination Singapore is an entry page to 4 destinations, Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta and HK. Site should be listed higher up somewhere, maybe in http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Travel_and_Tourism/Travel_Guides/. Agree there should be only one domain per category, as in the previously mentioned visitsingapore.com Also wrt http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Travel_and_Tourism/Travel_Guides/, APM Forum hasn't been updated for 6 years now, if that makes any difference to the directory. Backpack Asia appears to be gone. Custom Tour Guide | Photos of Asia and South Asia - I think I would call this something else, maybe D W Bennett Custom Tour Guide? Imperial Tours - take out "luxury"? I know that's what the site says, but lux. is in the eye of the beholder, no? The Internet Travel Guide - Title should be something like Pongü's Hotel and Travel Guides. Apparently title and perhaps emphasis have changed over the years. Leon Kaye's Travel Home Page is about travel not just in SE Asia but also Eastern Europe, so maybe move to more general locale that Asia. Luxury Travel: The Silk Road - Another "luxury" site? SuiteAsia.com: Travel Forum and Community - While it's true the forum is still there, it's very hard to see from all the hotel rez stuff from travel.ian.com (read travelnow.com). TravelForum.org - Not just Indonesia and Thailand forums, but specifically Bali and Lombok rather than Indonesia as a whole.
jeanmanco Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 #2489 and #2490 dealt with, thanks. The expat site worked for me too.
phantomize Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Laos/Travel_and_Tourism/ Diethelm Travel Laos - link is bad. There no doubt is a link to Laos, however, Diethelm is already listed under Bangkok travel agents, so maybe it's redundant to list here? IndochinaTour.com - The root url is also listed under Thailand travel agents - still want this one here? Lao Hotel Group - Redirects to laos-hotel-link.com which is an affiliate of worldhotel-link.com - still want it listed here? http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Laos/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Guides_and_Directories/ Laos Hotels is an affiliated of aaaahotels.net, a worldwide discounter of hotels. Laos Hotels Travel Guide wants you to go to hoteltravel.com (HTN, another worldwide consolidator).
kevin_svek Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/Clothing/Lingerie/ Exotic lingerie 4 U [EDIT] moved / Site has been redirected to url beolw New url: http://www.sexy-lingerie.uk.com/ Don't know if this counts as a hijack since it's in the same industry and the new site serves similar content to the original
phantomize Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Laos/Education/ National University of Laos - Wants you to go to another page I couldn't get to load. SSAYP - is some sort of message board or chat that doesn't seem much like an education site. http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Laos/Education/English/ Vientiane International School - A better url is http://www.vis.laopdr.com/ http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Laos/Health/ AIDS Laos - A small archive of info from 1996-2003, a bit out of date I think. Europ Continents Laos - Laos is just one link on the site to many countries - should be higher up in the hierarchy I'd think. Public Health: Asia - Laos - Five years since an update - just pointing it out. http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Laos/News_and_Media/ Laos News.net - Got nothing from site. Vientiane Times - is listed twice under Regional/Asia/Laos/ http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Laos/News_and_Media/Newspapers/ Vientiane Time (Official) - This is some kind of rehash of info from the Vientiane Times and only as recently as 6 years ago. http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Laos/Business_and_Economy/Telecommunications/ GSM cellular phone coverage map of Laos - Not found.
phantomize Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Singapore/Education/ Insworld Consultant Services International - can't be found. Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society (SIFAS) - is gone. http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Singapore/Education/Chemistry/ NUS Dept of Material Science - this dept has ceased to exist as such, and anyway it's not chemistry so should be listed elsewhere. http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Singapore/Education/Economics/ Asian Commerce and Economic Studies Centre (ACES) - redirects to another page which can't be found. The Institute of Policy Studies - has 3 listings under Regional/Asia?Singapore/ MAS economic research - why isn't the title simply Monetary Authority of Singapore? Also "Singaporeís" spelling. http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Singapore/Education/Educational_Achievement/ Study Rates Singapore Best In Math, Science - this study is dated 1996... http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Singapore/Education/Humanities/ The two subcat's here don't seem to belong to humanities, certainly not geography. http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Singapore/Education/Management/ Ednovation - has 3 Regional/Asia/Singapore listings. Formation Centre - homepage error, goes to web hosting service site. Hartford Management Centre - Directory Listing Denied http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Singapore/Education/Centralised_Institutes/ The first two listings are from the same domain (informaticsgroups.com) of which there are 3 total in Regional/Asia/Singapore cat's. Regional Applied Computing Centre (RACC) - looks like all in Chinese. http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Singapore/Education/Arts/ Lasalle-Sia College Of The Arts, Singapore - listed twice within Regional/Asia/Singapore/Education/ cat's
phantomize Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 Spelling problems too... Taken from the recent April, 2006 monthly report: At the same time, trustworthyness is now explicitly named among the criteria to consider when selecting sites. Unfortunately, the word in bold is misspelled. :embar: And while on the subject, I've run across quite a few other misspellings too many to go into right now. But I will point out just 2 that I'm almost afraid to mention but feel I should. 1. calender - 224 instances. Yes, I realize it's a legitimate word, but not the way editors are using it. In probably 99% of the instances in the directory, it appears to be the wrong word. Whenever you see a phrase like "events calender" or the like, you know it's wrong. 2. equiptment - 30 instances. Whatever happened to the mantra I keep reading about around here relating to "attention to detail"? Is it meant to apply only to prospective editors but less so to those who actually manage to become ones? I guess I have a different idea of what editors do, or at least what I think they should do. Maybe "site listers" would be a better title; that way there would be less pressure to be accurate and the rest of us wouldn't be surprised when things are wrong. The word editor implies a certain level of writing that too often is lacking in the directory. Sorry for the rant - when I see simple things done obviously wrong, it tends to drive me a little crazy. I know you all work hard, but if something is to be done it should be done properly. Maybe it's the consequence of a consensus-driven operation. What you really need is someone in charge who will crack the whip and refuse to tolerate sloppy work. OK, I'm dreaming, it's just how I'd probably do things.
