Dead Links - Maine/Culture/Orgs

The following category contains 7 dead links:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Society_and_Culture/Organizations/

Commission of Community Service

http://www.state.me.us/spo/mccs/ - The correct link is: http://www.state.me.us/communityservice/ Note also that the title is "Commission for Community Serivce" (not "of").

Franco-American Women's Institute

http://members.aol.com/FAWI2000/index.html - The correct URL is: http://www.fawi.net/

Maine Coast Men

http://www.mainemen.org/mcm/ - The correct URL is: http://www.mainecoastmen.org/

Maine Horticulture

http://janus.state.me.us/agriculture/plantind/homepage.htm - Given the old URL and given the title, the likely correct new URL is: http://www.state.me.us/agriculture/pi/horticulture.htm

or, to go up a level, it could be: http://www.state.me.us/agriculture/pi/index.html (but then the topic title would be better stated as "Maine Division of Plant Industry," of which the horticulture program is one element).

Maine State Federation of Firefighters Convention

http://www.bairnet.org/organizations/msfff/1999/ - First, the URL for this organization is http://www.msfff.org Second, I would delete the word "Convention" in the title, as this category is for orgs, not for specific events within orgs. Linking to a 1999 convention makes no sense.

Paved Shoulders for Bicycles Maine

http://www.bikemaine.org/pavedshoulders.htm - This appears to be less an organization than a cause within an organization, so shouldn't be listed at all. If it is to be listed, should be http://www.bikemaine.org/shoulders.htm (not /pavedshoulders.htm)

Penobscot River Keepers 2000

http://www.bairnet.org/organizations/riverkeepers/PRK2000.HTM - If you call the number for this org listed at the following URL, you'll find that it has been disconnected: http://www.mainerivers.org/penobscot.htm

Dead Links - Maine>Arts>Humor

The following category contains dead links:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Arts_and_Entertainment/Humor/

A Semi-Wicked Good Maine Page

http://www.angelfire.com/me/fromaway/index.html - The site has moved to its own domain (to which angelfire is kindly including a redirect, which is why the link from DMOZ still works). The correct URL is http://www.semiwickedgood.com/

The Wicked Good Guide to Mainah English

http://people.bu.edu/lorettah/glossary.html - If you click on this link, there is a statement that the site has moved and that one should check out http://home.earthlink.net/~lorilady/glossary.html

However, this link too is dead.

Dead Links - Maine>Travel>Events

The following category contains dead links:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Travel_and_Tourism/Events/

Maine Open Farm Day

http://www.mainefoodandfarms.com/openfarm/ - This is a dead link. Though there is nothing yet stated on the site about 2004, the link (which refers to the 2003 event) would be as follows: http://www.mainefoodandfarms.com/visit/open_farm_day.html

Maine Special Olympics-Law Enforcement Torch Run

http://members.aol.com/Mspe564/index.htm - This link is dead (though it has a redirect). The correct new link is: http://users.adelphia.net/~maineletr/

Re: Dead Links - Maine>Travel>Events

P.S. On Post #68096:

Though both work (for now) it is probably better on the Maine Open Farm Day link to use the "getrealmaine" nomenclature. I.e., substitute "mainefoodandfarms" in the URL with "getrealmaine" The resulting URL would be: http://www.getrealmaine.com/visit/open_farm_day.html

gckorn

P.S. Even the www.maine.gov website has many dead links from use of the old "mainefoodandfarms" links. See the various links under the "agriculture" heading here: http://www.maine.gov/portal/living/land_environ.html#agriculture

Dead Links: Maine>Restaurants

The following category contains dead (and perhaps hijacked) links:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Localities/B/Bath/Business_and_Economy/Restaurants_and_Bars/

J.R. Maxwell and Company

http://mainerestaurants.com/maxwells/ - This link is dead (well, it goes to mainerestaurants, but not to this particular restaurant). A URL that does work is: http://www.midcoastrestaurants.com/maxwells/

Kristina's Restaurant and Bakery

http://rivendell.fortunecity.com/albion/845/tinas/ - This link is amazing! Each click brings a different result. I've ended at an attorney finder site, at Motor Trend, at Hyperconnections, and a hundred other places (literally). Go figure. I called the restaurant and they have NO website.

Dead Link: Maine>Business>Restaurants

The following category contains a dead link:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Localities/B/Bar_Harbor/Business_and_Economy/Restaurants_and_Bars/

Maine Street Restaurant

http://www.mainestreetrestaurant.com/ - This link is dead. I called the listed telephone number for the restaurant and the recording stated it was no longer in service.

thanks again for helping out with these.

#67101 is waiting for a Recreation editor

#67643 done

#67986 done

#68096 / #68098 done . Have corrected existing url, and placed a note to the new domain for if/when it goes 404.

#68438 done

#68778 done . http://www.timesrecord.com/Taste_Midcoast/kristinas.html listed instead. The old link was delivering all those variant pages as the old host is selling their 404 traffic, so you are effectivly clicking on a PPC ad each time you head there

#68995 done. Can't find new site, did find a reference "open April-October,".

some hijacked german domains

hi!

in

http://dmoz.org/World/Deutsch/Freizeit/Humor/Witze/

www.witz.de was not really hijacked but probably sold to some dialer-guys. used to be a good site but it isn't any more and should be deleted. no free content at all any more as you can see.

and there was another one, but i just forgot that. well i'll first post this one, the other one later.

do you agree, that those site shouldn't be listed in odp?

Dead/Redirect Links: Maine>Trav>Monuments>Acadia

The following category contains duplicative and/or redirected links (and a link that at might warrant a title correction):

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Travel_and_Tourism/Parks/National_Parks_and_Monuments/Acadia_National_Park/

Acadia Visitor Guide

http://www.acadiaguide.com/ - This link is live.

Acadia Visitor Online

http://www.acadia-national-park.com/ - This link goes to a site that has IDENTICAL content to the above link, i.e., http://www.acadiaguide.com, even though the URL is different. It is odd, but there is no need for 2 links to the identical content. Also violates the rule "Do not add mirror sites."

Query on the following link:

Sailing Acadia National Park

http://www.downeastfriendshipsloop.com/ - The name of the company is "Downeast Friendship Sloop Charters." This does not match the link title, although it does match the meta-tag title. URL submission guidelines state: "Always opt for the official name of the site." The meta-tag is more "descriptive" than it is a title of the entity. Anyway, it had me confused.

Misdirected Link: Maine>Trav>Lodg>B&B

This one is odd. The following category has a link whose URL is that SAME as that of the category itself. The category is:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Localities/K/Kennebunk/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Bed_and_Breakfast/

The listing is:

Alewife House Bed & Breakfast

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Localities/K/Kennebunk/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Bed_and_Breakfast/ - The correct URL is as follows: http://www.alewifehouse.cjb.net/

gckorn

P.S. Given that the number system has changed, I went through old posts and tried to determine what was still open. Here they are:

#270/271: Same thing, but need #270 to see the issue, and #271 to access.

#285: The "Special Olympics" item still needs to be corrected.

Dead Links: Maine>Freeport>Trav>Lodg>B&B

The following category contains dead links:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Localities/F/Freeport/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Bed_and_Breakfast/

The listings are as follows:

Holbrook Inn

http://www.maineyellowpages.com/holbrookinn/ - This link gets redirected to a better link, http://www.holbrookinn.com, but even this link is dead. WHOIS shows this record on "REDEMPTION HOLD" status. I called directory assistance and they reported no listed number for this entity.

Old Red Farm

http://www.bbchannel.com/bbc/p202033.asp - This link gets redirected to http://www.bedandbreakfast.com. It still does not bring up Old Red Farm. I called directory assistance and they reported no listed number for this entity.

Re #296 Dealt with, thanks. There is new listing for Old Red Farm, but with limited content, so I am leaving it to the local editor to decide whether or not to list.
