I had to split this post into three posts to keep it under the DMOZ limit: These listings are referred to as deeplinks. Although we ask that these types of links not be suggested from the outside it is acceptable for editors building categories to seek out and use these deeplinks in certain circumstances, and within our stated guidelines In the case of specific Illustrators (as you noted) and also for smaller categories that are specific to well know people (artists, actors, etc.) this is a fairly common practice. Again, please note it is only at editors’ discretion and we generally do not allow outside suggestions of multiple deeplinks. Also, the Kids and Teens section of the directory is considered a separate entity and contains only kid safe sites. It is very possible and often encouraged to have sites appear in both the “Classic” directory and the Kids and Teens section when appropriate ased on the site content. Item3083 is done. My understanding of ODP site submission rules is that the HTML page title of the home page must be the company name. Therefore, this site never should have been added. This is not correct. The "Meta" title is of no concern when determining the listing of a site. The "Title" is determined from what appears on the site as the company, organization or entity name. Item #3072 - Mobile Burn - Although this is the exception and not the rule, it is possible to have a site double listed in Topical categories (at editor discretion only). I believe the "Non-profit" statement refers to the organization and not the actual website. However, as I did not find it stated on the web site I did remove it from the description. NCMan Posted May 5, 2007 Posted May 5, 2007 RE: Artisan Hi! Thanks for your reply regarding posts 3084-87, you mentioned: "These listings are referred to as deeplinks. Although we ask that these types of links not be suggested from the outside it is acceptable for editors building categories to seek out and use these deeplinks in certain circumstances, and within our stated guidelines " Thanks. I reviewed the guidelines and still fail to see how a couple of sites hawking magazine subscriptions and book sales can get so many directory linstings. http://www.bpib.com/ Sells "Images" magazine from each ODP listed page http://www.illustration-house.com/ Sells books and subscriptions from it's homepage http://www.ortakales.com/gallery/ Licenses the site owners art designs and advertises her commercial art illustration services These aren't large sites with thousands of diverse and eclectic pages. These are small focused commercial sites using their deeplinked pages to sell magazine subscriptions and books. Furthermore, they could easily provide single click access to each page from their homepage. They certainly did so for subscription links. In marketing, what these sites have done is to provide "loss leader" pages. each individual page doesn't make a great contribution to the bottom line but in aggregate, the large number of directory listings dramatically boosts the sites overall web visibility thereby allowing the site owner a substantial advantage in marketing their personal and highly related goods and services from the same site How is what they did any different than, the owner of a small hardware store posting a page about the history of a particlular screw or hammer where each page contains links to a shopping cart? Regards, NCMan
Meta Artisands Posted May 5, 2007 Meta Posted May 5, 2007 Arts/Illustration/Historic Illustrators/ contains sites and page links that provide information on well known Illustrators. The editor(s) who work to build out this category are looking for unique information about the individuals. They are not concerned with how a listing from a particular site is going to benefit the site owner in the search engines. They are not concerned with advertising and other links on the site (unless these are so extensive that the page content cannot be easily found. It is all about providing the web surfer with information specific to e.g. Edwin Austin Abbey as found on http://www.bpib.com/abbey.htm. I am not saying that every link is valid as I have not reviewed each one. At some point an editor found the link – most likely through a search on the Illustrator’s name and determined that it provided information that could be of use to someone interested in that particular Illustrator. How is what they did any different than, the owner of a small hardware store posting a page about the history of a particular screw or hammer where each page contains links to a shopping cart? No different at all. And if an editor decided to build a category on the history of that screw or hammer – it might just get listed. Curlie Meta editor artisands CurlieCrew
