Dead Links: Maine>Trav>Lodge>B&B

The following category contains 3 dead or incorrect links:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Localities/L/Lincolnville/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Bed_and_Breakfast/

These links are:

Cyder Valley Farm and Cellardoor Vineyard

http://www.midcoast.com/~cyder/ - First, the description references a B&B. However, the B&B closed several years ago, so there is no longer a B&B. Second, the correct URL for the remaining vineyard is http://www.mainewine.com. This vineyard is listed elsewhere on DMOZ (see http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Food/Drink/Wine/United_States/Maine/ ). Since this site is no longer a B&B, and is properly listed in a wine category, it does not seem appropriate to continue listing it as B&B in this category.

The Mount Battie

http://www.acadia.net/mtbattie/ - This link is dead (404 Error). The correct URL is http://mountbattie.com

Victorian By the Sea

http://www.midcoast.com/~victbb/ - This listing should be deleted. It already appears (with the correct URL) in the following listing:

Victorian By the Sea/Linconville Beach

http://victorianbythesea.com/index.html - THis is the 2nd of two identical listings in this category. Save this listing but delete the first listing that has the incorrect, old URL.

P.S. There is also an issue with the DMOZ search results for Cellardoor Winery. In the category (http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Food/Drink/Wine/United_States/Maine/) the result is correct. However, when one searches for "Cellardoor," the listing on the search page that appears (http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=cellardoor) is incorrect, as it retains the old URL (we changed this URL on the specific category a few weeks back).

A brief check shows that this may have happened for other if not ALL of the prior changes that are being made are getting made. I.e., only the specific directory is changed, but not the results that appear on the search page. I tested a random other change (#247) and saw the same thing: the search result for "Aurora Motel" still contains OLD data (and an invalid redirect).

How to handle? Do we need to report both the bad links in the specific category AND do a DMOZ search to have the search results page corrected as well? Or is this something that after a few months will sort out?

Dead/New Links: Maine>Rec/Sports>Reenactment

The following category contains listings (2 of the 3) with dead or new URLs:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Recreation_and_Sports/Reenactment/

The listings are as follows:

Midcoast Medieval Society

http://www.pinelandpress.com/mms/ - This link goes to a redirect that in turn is a dead link. I called a number of a representative (listed on another search result), and it was disconnected. It may still exist, but having great difficulty finding (I sent an email to midcoastmedievalsociety@yahoo.com, an old address on the web) and have not received a response. In any event, these links do not work.

3rd Maine Regiment, Company A

http://www.powerlink.net/mcgill/ - The correct URL is http://thirdmaine.org

In answer to whether you need to show us problems with the search results: No, you don't - it lags behind the "real" categoriy listing by quite some time, and it can be highly inconsistant. Editors have no control over it, too. Please just keep letting us know about problems in the categories themselves.

#303 and #304 done

Midcoast Medieval Society seems to now be on http://w3.ime.net/~barak/

Thanks again

Are there any I've missed? (I can edit only the Regional listings)

Alucard & Gimmster Replies

Dear Alucard -

Thank you for the explanation of the search engine lag time.

Dear Gimmster -

You asked for open items. They are:

#270/271 - These are the same (see 270 for the problem and 271 to access the category). Still showing 2 whale watch listings for same place. One is dead.

#285 - The Maine Special Olympics URL still needs correction. See post #285 for the correct listing content (part of #285 was already corrrected, but this one item was missed).

Incorrect Link: Recreation>Gyms>Maine

The following category contains an incorrect URL link:

http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Climbing/Indoor/Commercial_Gyms/North_America/United_States/Maine/

The listing requiring correction is:

Big Adventure

http://bigadventure.com/sub_rock_climbing_gym.htm - This page is gone from the site. Given the description (which is rock climbing, but also other activities), and given internal link changes over time, probably the better choice for a link is http://www.bigadventure.com If you wanted to link to just rock climbing, it would be http://www.bigadventure.com/rockgym.html. However, safer for long-time validity is the homepage, which as stated is http://www.bigadventure.com

P.S. Thanks very much gimmster (I forgot to say so in last post), thehelper and others.

In correct URL

Reading advice threads I was told this is the place to come to.

Our business focus has shifted dramatically out dating the current Dmoz listing

Current listing:

http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Jewelry/Watches/Utility/www.sporttek.com

would be better served in:

http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/Sporting_Goods/www.sporttek.co.uk

Or any appropriate regional section in the UK

Originally we set up to distribute products world wide but found this un workable so we changed our focus to supporting a more regional customer base in the UK thus we now operate under http://www.sporttek.co.uk. the current .com domain drives international custom to our site who we have to turn away to their dissatisfaction and much complaint.

We have submitted our changes a few times over 2003 but to no success this is our last resort and we apologize now, should this request be inappropriate but we are only following advice from this thread: http://resource-zone.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=11625

Any help most appreciated.

Most of this query has been answered within this thread and I would request that you continue to use that thread for enquires concerning your domain as requested in the forum guidelines.

Dead Links: Rec>Snowmobile>Maine

The following category contains a dead link (and perhaps a mis-titled link):

http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Outdoors/Snowmobiling/Organizations/North_America/United_States/Maine/

The links are:

Linneus Sno-Sports Snowmobile Club

http://www.geocities.com/linneussnosports/index2.html - This link is dead, perhaps because of the /index2.html at the end. If it is dropped, and one links simply to http://www.geocities.com/linneussnosports/ it works. However, the home page states "We Are Sorry Our Website Is Unavailable." Still, this is better than the current dead link.

The Maine Snowmobile Connection

http://www.sledmaine.com - The title of the site is Sled Maine. Not sure why the listing is titled as it is, but it is inconsistent with the site title. Even the Title META TAG states "SLEDMAINE."

Link Redirect: Maine>Rec/Sports>Sailing

A link for a listing in the following category is being redirected to what appears to be a proper, new link. The cateogry is:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Recreation_and_Sports/Sailing/

The listing is:

Schooner Nathaniel Bowditch

http://www.midcoast.com/~natbow/ - This link is now being redirected to http://www.windjammervacation.com/ This seems to be the correct new URL.

Thanks zombie, taken care of.

I got some more but I will post them later. I think I may clean up this category this way then apply to edit it as I have no sites to be listed in this category and I would have NO affiliation with people's personal web sites. Or maybe another one that has interest for me but I would have none of my own sites to list or have any affiliation. I will just clean up a few and apply later maybe.

http://dmoz.org/Society/Gay,_Lesbian,_and_Bisexual/Gay_Men/Bears/Personal_Pages/

Jasper redirects to multiple affliliate sites. Redirects so fast I can't get a copy and paste of the url.

kiwicub - http://www.kiwicub.co.uk/ Returning DNS errors.

MrJames - http://www.geocities.com/mrjameshh/index.html Returns a white blank page

Pinner - http://www.geocities.com/mrjameshh/index.html Returns almost the same thing

QBearDetroit - http://www.geocities.com/qbeardetroit Same as pinner

RainbowBear - http://www.virtualave.net/403_error.html 403 Page no longer available

RogerBear returns this url http://members.tripod.com/frelancr/ but should be http://www.rodgerdodger.net

Sashazur - http://bear.sashazur.com/ Has nothing but under construction

Thats wraps up that category pretty much.

Checked

I looked at it - definitely dead. But the whois record was made only a couple of months ago, and it is possible it may be down for maintenance or some other reason. As it is dead, I'll pull the site, and recheck every few days to make sure it really is. Thanks for posting. :)
