pet directory

Cat: http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/California/Metro_Areas/San_Francisco_Bay_Area/Business_and_Economy/Animals/

Site title: The Pet Directory

Problem: The site has no connection to that geo location and is full of sponsored results. Moreover, man can't advertise there, can't add url, can't contact the site staff. All in all, this is just another MFA site type. There is no value of such site. It's similar to meanwhile.com.

Items 3403 through 3405 done. All parked, rather than hijacked, but still not something we want in the directory.

Hi!

While searching:

http://www.dmoz.org/Arts/Performing_Arts/Comedy/Clubs_and_Venues/North_America/United_States/Idaho/

I encountered the following issue I wanted to bring to your attention:

URL Changed. The title link is dead but if you go to the homepage and select Boise, you are taken to the correct site

- Provides information about reservations, schedule, show times, discount passes and directions.

I suspect this is the URL that should be used.

Hi!

While searching:

http://www.dmoz.org/Society/Organizations/Animal_Welfare/Rescues_and_Shelters/Regional/North_America/United_States/Idaho/

I encountered the following issue I wanted to bring to your attention:

Sophisticated Link Hijack. This is a sophisticated link hijack in that the first time you click the link (no prior cookie set), you are taken to a pay-per-click page. Press your browsers back button, click the link again and you'll be taken to the real site.

- Contains information about adoption, dog licenses, county laws, and tips for finding a lost pet.

To reproduce this:

1.) Clear your browsers cookies.

2.) Click the title link. You'll be taken to the pay-per-click page.

3.) Press your browsers back button.

4.) Re-click the link. You'll be taken to the real site.

Note: If your browser is set to deny cookies, you'll always go to the PPC page.

Redirecting a visitor that does not have a site cookie to a PPC page may not seem like a big issue but I did some searching and the webhost company that is doing this has over 4,000 ODP entries!

Correction to my post #3410

Sorry but I didn't quite describe the scenario correctly in my prior post #3410. Here it is again. Hope I get it right this time.

1.) Clear your browsers cookies.

2.) Click the title link. You'll be taken to a site where if you scroll down a bit past the PPC stuff, a message tells you the URL has changed and to click an image to be taken to the new site.

3.) Click the image. You'll be taken to the pay-per-click page.

4.) Press your browsers back button.

5.) Re-click the image link. You'll be taken to the real site if you accepted the fortunecity.com cookie. If you didn't accept the cookie, you'll go to their PPC page again.

ODP Category:

Subject Entry:

- Contains information about adoption, dog licenses, county laws, and tips for finding a lost pet.

Over 4,000 ODP entries this webhost company has.

http://www.dmoz.org/Society/Organizations/Animal_Welfare/Rescues_and_Shelters/Regional/North_America/United_States/Idaho/

I encountered the following issue I wanted to bring to your attention.

Inactive site. Blank page except for a message that says site has moved and gives new URL without an automatic redirection

- Includes pictures of available pets, adoption policies, and pet care tip of the week.

Could some please update http://dmoz.org/Sports/Tennis/Instruction/ a little bit.

It seems like I'm the only one interested in maintaining that category.

I have found 4-5 dead links there over the last 4 months (which someone took of), how about updating that category with new sites as well.....

In the meantime, here's another dead one....

Fone International Tennis Academy - parked page.

RE: Item 3411

The URL listed is obviously not the correct URL as eventually you get through to the true url which is the one that should be considered. Unfortunately changes cannot be implemented until the maintenance described in the Announcement Sticky is completed. Hopefully, that will be sometime today and then tomorrow someone can tackle this.

It can take anywhere from two hours to several years for a site review to take place.

I do not respond to private messages requesting site status checks.

You could always volunteer to edit it then ;)

(I don't review applications in that area, but you might find it easier to be accepted for the smaller http://dmoz.org/Sports/Tennis/Instruction/Camps/ sub-category first.)

And another off-topic thing: for tennis instruction that's only relevant to a certain geographic area, I'd have thought a listing somewhere in http://dmoz.org/Regional/ would be far more appropriate than in that global http://dmoz.org/Sports/Tennis/Instruction/ .

#3407, #3408, #3409, #3410/3411, #3412, #3413 (the missing site), #3417 through #3422 dealt with - thanks!

3410: I can't duplicate the situation you laid out. I have listed the new functioning URL, though.

The potential dead link works fine for me, so have left it.

I think this has dealt with everything outstanding - your vigilance is really appreciated!

@NCMan:

It´s not necessary to put the same title (which is also the title of this entire thread) to every post in this thread. It´s a bit redundant... ;)

Here's how to Reproduce the Issue ( I hope)

3410: I can't duplicate the situation you laid out. I have listed the new functioning URL, though.

I apologize for the poor description in #3410. My correction in #3411 is more accurate. anyway, I tried again and had no problem duplicating the issue. So, let me try explaining in a hopefully clearer manner.

Essentially, what this webhost company appears to be doing is taking advantage of the large number of clients they have to generate PPC revenue from 1st time visitors to a particular clients site. In this case, it's clients sites that have changed URL's but not updated their ODP entry. Anyway, once they've set a cookie, they won't present you with the PPC page again.

1.) Clear your browsers cookies.

2.) Click the category entry link to Canyon County Animal Control.

3.) There will be a box of PPC ads near the top of the landing page.

4.) Scroll down a bit and you will see an animated gif of a dog next to the Canyon County Animal Shelter title.

5.) Beneath the animated dog gif, you will see the message: "Welcome to the Canyon County Animal Control/Shelter home page. We have moved to a new web location, so please update your book marks. Just click on the picture to go to our new home!"

6.) The image link they direct you to has the following properties: "http(colon)//business(dot)fortunecity(dot)com/lauder/364/SHELTERA.jpg"

7.) Click the image link. You will be taken to the subject PPC page having the following address: "http(colon)//www(dot)fortunecity(dot)com/banners/interstitial.html?http://www.canyoncountyshelter.org/"

8.) As long as this fortunecity webhost hasn't set a cookie in your browser, you can back up to the previous page and reclick the image link and you will be taken to the same PPC page.

9.) Once this fortunecity webhost sets a cookie, they will link you immediately to the animal shelters home page.

10.) For a single company having low traffic, this may not be a big deal, However, when you and your clients have over 4K ODP entries, directing first time visitors to a PPC page in hope of scoring a few accidental clicks might generate some money. How pervasive this is with the fortunecity webhost I don't know but will spend some time looking into that issue later.

If you still have problems reproducing this issue, don't hesitate to let me know.

Regards,

NCMan
