Dead/Redirect Links: US>Maine>Science & Environment

The following category contains dead and redirected links:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Science_and_Environment/

The listings in need of repair are:

Dartmouth RARGOM

http://www-nml.dartmouth.edu/rargom/ - This link should be replaced by the redirected link, which is: http://zeus.mbl.edu/rargom/

Gardening to Conserve Maine's Native Landscape

http://www.nps.gov/plants/pubs/gardenME/ - This link should be replaced by the redirected link, which is: http://www.umext.maine.edu/onlinepubs/htmpubs/2500.htm

Gateway to the Gulf of Maine Seaweeds by Algaetech

http://www.maine.com/algaetech/gateway/gateway.htm - The link is dead. There is a website for algaetech (http://algae.sch.ac.kr/main/main.aspx), but cannot find a relevant article within.

National Geographic: Unexplored Spaces by Virginia Morell

http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/2000/biodiversity/biomes/index.cfm - The link is dead for it states "This Feature is No Longer Available."

P.S. #310 is still open.

All fixed - thanks :moz:

No problem. Here's another category I swept thru today.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://dmoz.org/Society/Gay,_Lesbian,_and_Bisexual/Gay_Men/Bears/Relationships/

Alain_and_Vincent - Link is http://www.geocities.com/bigbelbears/ but should be http://www.bigbelbears.com/

Ed_and_Scott shows a description of "Presenting their life, relationship, photos." "Presenting their online community forum” might be more appropriate. Or maybe moved to this Category - http://dmoz.org/Society/Gay,_Lesbian,_and_Bisexual/Gay_Men/Chats_and_Forums/ As this site is now just a forum. Also the DMOZ link refers to http://obeythetoaster.com but it immediately redirects to http://obeythetoaster.com/forum

JohnandPaul - http://reddogshouse.homestead.com/RedDogOne.html Homestead shows disabled.

MarkBear_an_Fursus - http://www.angelfire.com/ego/2furryfinns Returns not available from Angel Fire.

Rob_and_Steve – http://www.powerup.com.au/~cuji Returns a 403

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This operation seems to move fairly quickly, would I be correct to say that the urls already listed in the directory that need updating are a higher priority than others parts of the operation? Seems to be a faster pace for updating currently listed sites.

This is nothing of any big issue how as I doubt the average searcher|surfer would even notice, how ever I notice some descriptions are written as first party and some are written as third party.

i.e.

Thier online community about gardening and landscaping.

Our online community about gardening and landscaping.

What is the perferred way?

Posted
Third person descriptions are now preferred, but this wasn't always as stringent. And yes, a lot more emphasis is put on the quality of stuff in the directory and making sure that it is valid content than the rush to submit new sites. We definitely strive for quality first, then quantity.

I didn’t completely finish this category: http://dmoz.org/Society/Gay,_Lesbian,_and_Bisexual/Gay_Men/Bears/

Bearcelona – DMOZ has this URL http://www.geocities.com/bearcelona/ but should be this url http://www.bearcelona.org/

BRear - Lounge – DMOZ has this URL http://www.brearlounge.com/ seems to be a typo and should be http://www.bearlounge.com/ Although all that is there is a Coming Soon. Maybe this isnt a typo but something isnt right with the listing.

Buffalo Bears - http://buffalobears.buffnet.net/ Returns nothing but a white page.

everquestbears - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/everquestbears/ Might be better suited in http://dmoz.org/Society/Gay,_Lesbian,_and_Bisexual/Gay_Men/Mailing_Lists/ as it is a yahoo group.

Gay Bears Bed & Breakfast in London, UK - http://www.pride-holidays.com/kw.htm Might be better suited in http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Society_and_Culture/Gay,_Lesbian_and_Bisexual/Travel_and_Accommodation/ as it doesn’t really seem to be focusing on just the gay bear traveler.

Gay San Francisco Wolf / Bear Cub - http://www.sanfranciscobear.com/ appears to be dead (DNS error) as the who is doesn’t seem to reflect anything from San Francisco or even the US.

Northeastern Kansas Bear Club – DMOZ has this URL http://jctbears.tripod.com/ but should be this URL http://jctbears.xcaliburclub.com/

Ok now that category is wrapped up.

In the everquestbears listing, is it pretty much a judgment call as to where it should be placed?

DMOZ Expired

I cannot read the language of the DMOZ listing, but this URL is listed on the web as being an "expired DMOZ" domain available for registration (obviously, someone has picked it up, and the language of the website is now English, as opposed to the DMOZ listing)(whois shows it was just registered on March 18):

Category:

http://dmoz.org/World/Svenska/Regionalt/Europa/Sverige/Hallands_l%c3%a4n/Kommuner/Falkenberg/Kultur_och_underh%c3%a5llning/

Listing:

Falkenbergs Föreläsningsförening - Aktuellt program samt presentation av föreläsarna.

http://www.forelas.org/

P.S. I apologize for submitting a prior post (which I've deleted) without first assessing whether the links already had been deleted from DMOZ (many had). There is enough to do without creating more effort for already completed work.

331, 332 and 333 are done.

I left everquestbears where it was on the theory that being about bear culture was more relevant for someone looking for it than was being a mailing list or group.

I don't read Swedish either, but I can see that forelas.org doesn't belong in dmoz in any language. Gone now.

No sweat about the superfluous post, gckorn. On the contrary, thanks for catching it before I'd gotten too far into it.

And thank you both for helping make dmoz a better directory.

These two sites are age restricted Yahoo Groups, they should be moved out of the general directory and into an adult listing?

http://dmoz.org/Society/Gay,_Lesbian,_and_Bisexual/Gay_Men/Chats_and_Forums/

Anyways here is the info:

The Renaissance Group - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/therenaissancegroup/

Street Diversity - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/street_diversity/

However without actually joining the group it doesn’t appear to be much adult material. So without joining the group it is hard to tell but you do have to state your 18 to get there.

Posted

I'm not seeing anything in the description of either of those groups that suggests Adult content by dmoz standards. And the descriptions haven't changed in any significant way since they were listed, so I'm pretty sure they're still ok.

I'm guessing that Yahoo has a different threshold for requiring adulthood to access than we do.

But don't let this slow you down. You're finding some bad stuff that I'm happy to eliminate, and I'll be even happier if you keep it up.

Ok that was my thought too as Yahoo can get a wild hair up thier ___ just over the word gay.....so they very well may be just covering them selfs.

Ok now I have a question. Im going thru category that does have an editor. Im still going thru the category cause I want too ;) However should I report anything here if I find something? I dont want to get on anyones toes.
Posted

It depends on what you find.

Changed content, site taken over by something inappropriate, go ahead and post it here if you like.

If you feel that there's enough to embarrass the editor, a private message to a meta might be better.

And if you suspect deliberate abuse, you should send mail to http://report-abuse.dmoz.org/ .

ok very good.

I am assuming the number in ( ) after a directory level indicates how many total sites listed there and anything under it, assuming the sub categories were still in the same root directory? Are editors susposed to tally that or is that a generated number cause no matter how I add this up I dont get what is in the ( )

Yes, your assumption is correct.

The number in brackets includes all sites listed in that category and it's sub categories.

It does not, however, include the number of sites in @linked categories, even though the totals are displayed for them as well.

For an example

http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Florida/Localities/A/Apalachicola/

Apalachicola (26)

Arts and Entertainment (1)

Business and Economy (5)

Education (2)

Guides and Directories (2)

Health (0)

News and Media (3)

Real Estate@ (1)

Recreation and Sports (8)

Travel and Tourism (2)

Weather (3)

Total 27

but it that is really counting the 1 site in Real Estate twice as the @link is a pointer to a sub category of Business and Economy. So the automatic counter knowss there are 26 sites , but it appears there are 27 if you add it manually and don't disregard any @links.

Related Categories ("see also" links) also have site numbers, but are not true sub categories, and so are not included in the category count

Clear as mud?

ok the @ was getting me. I was leaving one out and counting one.......but yep clear as mud now. This is what happens from lack of sleep ; )

I'm one of the listed editors at the top of the GLB branch, and I have no problem with you going through and finding things to tidy up :) Unfortunately the GLB cats have been neglected by some of us lately. We sometimes have other chores that need to be done. The GLB cats are sometimes depressing to work on as well because so much spam and porn is submitted to them.

Dead Link: Maine>Auburn>Real Estate

Following category has a duplicate link (the first can be deleted, as it has old URL):

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Localities/A/Auburn/Business_and_Economy/Real_Estate/

Developers Marketing Resource

http://www.developersmarketing.com/ - This URL is old and has been replaced. The correct URL is included in the 2nd listing for this same name in this category. So, just delete the first listing.

Dead Link: Maine>Business>Real Estate

The following category contains a dead link:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Localities/W/Waterville/Business_and_Economy/Real_Estate/

The listing is:

Tom Munson Realtor

http://www.tommunsonre.com/ - The site is dead. According to whois, this domain expired in January 2004 and is in "redemption period." If it is not revived by owner, it will be reregistered by someone who wants a DMOZ listing.

Dead Link: Maine>Counties>York

The following category contains a dead link:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Counties/York/

Profile for York County

http://66.223.51.57/capitolimpact/gw/cntydetail.asp?state=me&stfips=23&stname=Maine&fips=23031 - Not sure where this link came from. A possible replacement is FedStats/MapStats, which in this instance (York County) would be: http://www.fedstats.gov/qf/states/23/23031.html (note that the numbers at very end of this URL happens to match the numbers in the dead URL).

Dead Links: Regional>US>NewEngland>Weather

The following category contains dead links:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Regions/New_England/Weather/

The listings are:

National Weather Service-Boston

http://tgsv5.nws.noaa.gov/er/box/ - This link is no longer used. The link contained therein refers to the same one included in DMOZ in the listing that is just ABOVE this one, i.e., National Weather Service-Eastern Region. So, perhaps just delete this (Boston) listing.

New England Hurricane Barriers

http://www.nae.usace.army.mil/usr1/web/static/htmlfiles/hurrbarr.html - This link is dead. Could not find an exact replacement. You might just try http://www.nae.usace.army.mil (which is the Army Corps of Engineers site for the New England region) and then state, in the description, that one can search for hurricane barrier documents within (though even some of the documents found in a search return 404 errors).
