#3647 dealt with, thanks.

SEOteams states that it is based in the Haridwar region.

We do not usually create subcategories for SEO firms in Regional.

ODP has a general policy for content that it will and won't list at http://dmoz.org/guidelines/include.html

There are various types of sites allowed (sometimes only in specific areas), and the description of these is at http://dmoz.org/guidelines/site-specific.html

I mention the above links to help you decide if you've spotted something which doesn't belong.

---------------

Some sites (usually companies) change their content over the years and the descriptions and category locations have not kept up with the changes. Point us to those listings, and we'll re-review the site.

Some sites are blatant, money-making HIJACKS. Someone's domain expires and is snapped up by those who are trying to get people to visit casinos, porn sites, ebay, "distance learning" sites, shady pseudodrug sites ("herbal viagra!"), a nice-looking PPC (pay-per-click) directory or whatever else can make someone a few cents or bucks. Sometimes the intent is just linking trickery hoping to get Google to make a site jump to the top for some term or phrase. In any case, we want to know about all of these HIJACKS -- especially those which are PORN in a non-adult area of the directory.

Sometimes a company buys the URLs of other companies (or even nonrelated URLs) and then redirects you to or mirrors their site. This is a type of directory abuse typically practiced by those wanting multiple listings - although it could be entirely inadvertent. Tell us about any MIRRORS you see and we'll rereview those sites ASAP.

Finally, there is the ol' BAIT AND SWITCH. Site owner gets listed, says "yippee," and then goes and changes the some or all of the content to something unacceptable. Others are sneakier and decide to serve up some "nice and appropriate" page for those coming from dmoz.org (who are usually editors) but a "cruddy and otherwise inappropriate" page to everyone else, the public. We want to know if you ever find any sites like these.

You can report DEAD DOMAINS here as well as those which seem to be placeholder pages ("Coming soon!") since they're likely candidates for hijacking.

http://www.magelectronicsbest.com/

This site sells electronics is it says it's based in the UK. This site has no security in their checkout and is prone to hijack. The site says it has ssl encryption through their servers, but it doesn't. If you have a Firefox browser, go on Tools, then go to options, then go to the Security tab, then go to the bottom and click on settings and click on the box that says show a warning dialog when I submit information that is not encrypted. After you do this your browser will inform you and remind you when you proceed to magelectronicsbest checkout that is Not encrypted. When I first encountered this page I did not know about this. I tryed to buy a laptop and a week latter someone had all my credit card information and tryed to buy 500.00 worth of merchandise on yahoo. This was the only web page that I had made transactions with and I had to cancel my card. I'm also including a link with more info. http://forum.aa419.org/viewtopic.php?t=16929 This site should be shutdown.

shareware directories discussion

#3503 – Done

#3505 – Done

@ aaleksanyants – 100apps.com is a hijack. I don’t find that it was ever listed in the directory, but possibly it is redirecting from another listing. Where is the listing you are referencing (title-category-listed URL)?

Oops, I meant 1000apps.com (one zero missing) in software/shareware/directories.

Software/Directories is a general category software products/sites that offer a large mix and would not easily fit into a more defined subcategory. The Software/Shareware/Directories category is specific to Shareware (so the majority of products/sites listed should be for shareware). I found a couple duplicates between the two, but not “lots”. Also, from what I can see, submissions are accepted into both categories.

Please take a look at MOST of sites in shareware directories section, most of them accept BOTH shareware and freeware without any limitation regarding the license type, and got listed there only because even if submissions are theoretically accepted in software directories (one level up), they are NEVER processed! I have submitted my free-to-try.com site to software directories for more than 14 months ago with no result, but when I resubmitted it to shareware directories in this summer I got it listed in 3-4 weeks!

Suggestion: You should better modify the hierarchy structure to:

Software: Directories - no listings, just subcategories:

Software: Directories: Shareware

Software: Directories: Freeware

Software: Directories: Open Source

Software: Directories: Web Scripts

Software: Directories: Games

etc.

#3661 - None of those sites are currently listed in the Open Directory. Parked domains tend to get delisted automatically.

Thanks for the info as i am a little newbie H you answered my question

Shareware > Merchant Services

DigitalCandle - no site but only "Not in Service" page

downloadAtoZ.com - this is a shareware directory and has nothing to do with processing payments, so why is it listed in this category?

Zerotec - returns "can't find the server at www.zerotec.com"

Sw-reg.com - "The Virtual Server for this domain is not currently active. If you wish to contact the domain owner, please consult the appropriate whois registry."

Order1.net - acquired by Plimus.com (which is not even listed???!!! You should know that it is one of the THIRD popular shareware payment services after RegNow and Share-It!!!)

#3651 is done

#3656 is done

#3657 - I agree the site looks fishy, but we do not have it listed in the directory.

#3662 - None of those URLs are listed in the directory.

#3666 is done. Sw-reg.com is working now.

#3667 is done.

[Re: #3667] I understand the site is big but being listed 149 times in dmoz with its different internal links to me is little bit fishy.
Harmonize.com offers free hosting to barbershop quartet and/or chorus sites. So its not really surprising that we have multiple listings.

Thanks :)

Re: Shareware > Merchant Services

Problem with SW-Reg.com still persists, here is what I see:

The Virtual Server for this domain is not currently active. If you wish to contact the domain owner, please consult the appropriate whois registry. Registry information can be obtained from the InterNIC Registry Whois.

Also there are the following links missing in this category (all the services are well known):

avangate.com

emetrix.com

yaskifo.com

Spam?

Hi,

searching for "timeanddate" its appear 14 in several categories. Some of them it could be all right, but there are some links like this:

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=169

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=44

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=159

...

I think this is a sort of spam, all webmaster would like to have all subpages in the directory, but this is not possible...

Thanks

I tend to agree with you about those. I'll look into it. (As you haven't given the full list of URLs you think inappropriate, I don't think I can give a "done" notice.)

But those sites are not mine! I'd better become an editor to add them from within my editor account. BTW, I have applied for editing this category along with some others in "Shareware" category bit still did not receive any reply.

Anybody can suggest a website to a category - not just those with a vested interest.

But what if their owners have already applied for DMOZ listing and wait for the inclusion? In such case my re-submission with throw their submission to the end of the list!

And now some issues found in "Computers > Software > Freeware > Music and Audio":

MP3Manager (http://www.volweb.cz/str/) - This project has been closed. Thank you for your support.

Midi Karaoke Software - (http://www.basi-karaoke.com/software/free/) - first, this is a software catalog containing freeware and shareware by other authors and not genuine software, and second, it seems to be in Italian, check http://www.basi-karaoke.com to ensure

RandomFill - (otterplus.com/randomfill) - error 404

UniTagger - (http://www.unitagger.com) - error 404

DigiMode Maya - (http://www.digimode10.com/availmaya.htm) - what a crap is this?! There is even no descriptsion in DMOZ, and the downloadable file itself has 318 BYTES (!!!) size and does not even open!
