Dead Link: Maine>York>Economy>Real Estate

The following category contains a dead link:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Localities/Y/York/Business_and_Economy/Real_Estate/

The dead listing is:

Greg Gosselin-RE/MAX Realty One

http://www.realtor.com/iLead/default.asp?mls=maine&aid=22327 - This URL is dead. Research on the internet shows a live link, which could be used in its place: http://www.seacoastregionproperties.com/ggosselin_home.html

Dead Link

The following category contains a dead link that is listed as an "expired DMOZ domain" on a recently-expired domains site. It has already been reregistered (probably on March 21, given the March 21, 2005 expiration date):

http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Designers/Full_Service/K/

The listing is:

Kutting Edge Grafix, Inc.

http://www.kuttingedgegrafix.com/ - The link does not return a live page.

Dead Link (noted as DMOZ-avail domain on site that lists expired domains)

The following category contains a dead link, noted as available for registration as a DMOZ-listed site:

http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Indiana/Localities/I/Indianapolis/Society_and_Culture/Religion/Christianity/Baptist/

The listing is:

St. John's Missionary Baptist Church

http://www.stjohnsmbc.org/ - The link is dead at the moment, but will doubtless be picked up by someone.

Dead Link (listed as available DMOZ-listed site on recently expired domains list)

The following category contains a link that is listed as recently expired DMOZ, but is obviously now active. Since cannot read the langauge, not sure if the new content matches the old listing:

http://dmoz.org/World/Fran%c3%a7ais/R%c3%a9gional/Europe/France/R%c3%a9gions/Ile_de_France/Paris/Commerce_et_%c3%a9conomie/Arts_et_divertissements/

The listing is:

Péniche du Quai de la Gare

http://www.locationsalle-peniche.org/ - This domain was just recreated on March 23, 2004, so it is fairly clearly a reregistration of an expired DMOZ-listed domain.

Hello,

Well, the site is still about an on-board restaurant on the Seine.

I changed the name (it's now Quai de Seine), but it looks very legit otherwise.

Txs for your help.

Multiple Listings & Dead Links

Several issues in the following category:

http://dmoz.org/Home/Cooking/Fish_and_Seafood/Shellfish/Lobster/

First, the following just doesn't seem right. One entity, The Recipe Box, has eleven (11) different listings in just one category. To be sure, each of the 11 different listings goes to a different page of the site, but I've not seen this elsewhere on DMOZ (even with "topics" submitted to a central site by multiple users). It would appear more appropriate to include one listing with reference to the fact that this entity has numerous lobster recipes. But wait, there is more:

A DMOZ search shows that there are in fact 569 different DMOZ listings for http://www.therecipebox.com.

Couldn't (and shouldn't) there be just one entry for this collection of recipes, perhaps in the following category:

http://www.dmoz.org/Home/Cooking/Recipe_Collections/ This certainly seems the most appropriate consolidated topic. (For example, http://www.anywherebutinthekitchen.com has "over 1,000" recipes, but just 3 total DMOZ listings, including the one in this consolidated category that references its very many recipes).

Anyway, in just this single lobster category, here are the 11:

Barbecued Lobster Tails

http://www.therecipebox.com/members/box/seafood/sea0124.htm

Boiled and/or Broiled Lobster

http://www.therecipebox.com/members/box/seafood/sea0135.htm

Boiled Lobsters

http://www.therecipebox.com/members/box/seafood/sea0102.htm

Braised White Wine Lobster

http://www.therecipebox.com/members/box/seafood/sea0134.htm

Buttery Lobster Tails

http://www.therecipebox.com/members/box/seafood/sea0104.htm

Lobster American-Style

http://www.therecipebox.com/members/box/seafood/sea0100.htm

Lobster Gaspesian-Style

http://www.therecipebox.com/members/box/seafood/sea0010.htm

Lobster Lincoln

http://www.therecipebox.com/members/box/seafood/sea0051.htm

Lobster Shells

http://www.therecipebox.com/members/box/seafood/sea0048.htm

Lobster Tails and Clarified Butter

http://www.therecipebox.com/members/box/seafood/sea0103.htm

Newburg-Style Lobster

http://www.therecipebox.com/members/box/seafood/sea0101.htm

In addition to the above multiple listing issue, the following are dead links in this category:

Lobster Newburg

http://www.linkline.com/personal/gingen/fish/newburg.htm

Lobster Recipes

http://www.mainelobsterdirect.com/recipe/

New England Lobster Quiche

http://www.linkline.com/personal/gingen/fish/newen.htm

P.S. If 569 listings is in fact not appropriate, please advise and I'll volunteer to go through them all to point them out for removal.

You've noticed that we sometimes take these out of order. Going in order has the advantage of making things easier to track but sometimes special skills are needed, like an ability to read French (you just saw that happen) or ...

The recipe categories have guidelines that I'm not at all familiar with. If nobody deals with this one before it scrolls too far down, I'll cry for help.

569 Recipe Listings

Dear brmehlman -

Thanks for looking at this! I don't see any recipe-specific editorial guidelines either, but this has been an opportunity to pour over the editorial guidelines (which I much enjoyed).

I noticed that these guidelines would seem to highly disfavor the practice of deep- and multi-links. In the general category for recipes, this seems to be the rule as well (but with a couple of exceptions that do seem out of place and in fact highlight the general rule . . . see my p.s. below).

http://dmoz.org/guidelines/site-specific.html#deeplinks

Deeplinking URLs: Deeplinking is the process of adding links to sub-pages and sub-domains within a site. General Rule: In the vast majority of categories and branches, deeplinking is the exception rather than the rule

http://dmoz.org/guidelines/site-specific.html#multiple

Multiple Listings of an URL: Most sites will fit perfectly into one category. ODP categories are specialized enough so that in most cases you should not list a site more than once. If a site offers many different things, it should be listed in a more general category as opposed to listing it many specialized subcategories. A site must be directly relevant to the scope of the category in which you are listing a site. Consult category charters to determine a category's topical scope. For example, if you have a site on US History covering the American Revolution, the Civil War, and the Presidents, you should not list it in each one of those subcategories, but rather list it in a general category such as Society/History/By_Region/North_America/United_States/ . . . multiple listings should be the exception, not the rule

gckorn

P.S. Here are the number of DMOZ listings for some others in the general recipe category:

AbsoluteRecipes - 10 listings for this collection of recipes.

AllChefsRecipes - 1 listing for this database of recipes.

AllRecipes - 238 listings for this collection of recipes.

AmericanSchoolFoodServiceOrg - 3 listings for this school recipe org.

AmyGale'sRecipeIndex - 1 listing (I think) for this collection of recipes.

AnneMaree'sRecipeCollection - 1 listing

AnywhereButInTheKitchen - 3 listings for the extensive collection of recipes.

ArconiatsKitchen - 1 listing (I think) for the collection of recipes.

ArielsRecipeArchives - 1 listing for this "very large" archive of recipes.

TheArtisan - 1 listing for this collection of recipes.

AssociationforDressing&Sauces - A dead link.

AViewofAmericaRecipes - 1 listing for this american recipe collection.

AwesomeChefRecipes - 1 listing.

BareIngredients - 1 listing (in a general search, but I know I've seen others).

BarlowsRecipes - 1 listing.

etc.

Perhaps what might be happening is that a few site owners are submitting deep-links to different editors in vastly different categories. Not knowing of the general category link, the editors add the deep links. This is just a guess, but seems plausible.

Yes, you are right about deeplinks being the exception.

It appears that Recipes is one of those exceptions.

From what I can see (and I don't edit in Home either) it was decided that listing individual recipes is preferred as that allows us to link to different categorisations on external sites. It appears that where complete collections of a specific food type exist, the index page should be listed, but I'm not absolutely positive.

It's an area I don't normally watch the internal forums for. Editor discussion is what sets the individual categories listing criteria.

Affiliate schemes

Dear Editors,

I think I may have posted in the wrong area of this forum. Recently, I complained about suspected abuse in the category, http://dmoz.org/Games/Gambling/Slots, but was unsure if it was due to editor abuse or simply neglect. I think it is because of neglect. Some of the sites have become packed with affiliate marketing, and it is a fairly small category. http://www.slots-info.com and http://www.slot-machine-games.net, both have a 'golden palace casino' moving banner that pops up every two seconds wherever your curser moves over the content. Some of the sites do have quality and original content, but other sites are strictly for the purpose of affiliate marketing and are bordering on what I would consider as not having enough useful and UNIQUE content to justify the affiliate marketing. Since I am not an expert on ODP policy, I was really hoping someone could go in and take a look since the decision regarding what's appropriate is not mine. I took a look at some other sub categories under gambling, such as poker, and found that it was very clean and had sites with little to no affiliate marketing and really quality content. I hope this will bring the issue to your awareness. Thanks for your time.

Dead Links?

Hi,

I've found the following in this catagory...

http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/Jewellery/

Some of the links just displayed a 'page not displayed message' so I'm not sure if the sites were just down when I was looking or are no longer available.

http://www.jewelleryadventure.co.uk/ (says not live yet)

http://www.jewellerywebshop.co.uk/ (says page cannot be displayed)

http://www.jsculley.com/ (says page cannot be displayed)

http://www.ams-creations.co.uk/ (ceased trading?)

http://www.bluetopaz-jewellery.co.uk/ message ‘website no longer available’

http://www.thejewellerystore.com/ can't get into this site, it just takes you to the thank you page.

Still looking so let me know if the format I've written these isn't correct and I'll do any future ones properly. This category was edited on March 19th so perhaps they've already been identified and it just hasn't updated yet in which case apologies for making you go look.

More links

In the same category, I've found the following...

http://www.kubos.co.uk/ (page cannot be displayed)

http://www.lola-b-accessories.co.uk/ (just get a page full of ‘tempw’s’)

http://jewellery.hanfordonline.co.uk/ (just get a blank page)

http://www.silverose.co.uk/ (page not displayed )

http://www.percy-french.com/ (nothing to do with jewellery, seem to be a mobile phone distributor.)

http://www.vandenberg.co.uk/ (page not displayed)

http://www.world-crystals.com/ (page not displayed)

Goldcast Jewellery Auctions goes to http://www.gold-cast.co.uk/ (which doesn’t seem to have anything to do with jewellery, but, first time for everything, I could be wrong ;) )

http://www.gemsnthings.co.uk/ (get message ‘you don’t have authorisation on this server’)

http://www.gemline.co.uk/ (page cannot be displayed)

GillS Thanks for that, I think they have all been taken care of. A couple of sites worked when I checked, so they are still listed.

As for format, If at all possible, rather than just the URL, can you please provide the site Title as well: http://jewellery.hanfordonline.co.uk/ took forever to find

Rachel Lee Jewellery - http://jewellery.hanfordonline.co.uk/ would have made it much quicker, thanks (this is now on a different URL rachel-lee-jewellery.wahmweb.com )

Thanks again

Dead Links

The following general category contains the 16 counties of Maine:

http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Counties/

For each county there is a subcategory. In each subcategory there is a listing for NACO, the National Association of Counties. So far, so good.

However, within each county subcategory, the NACO listing for the specific county is dead. Because it is dead, the user is directed to a NACO page that is a map of the entire United States.

If the original intention for including these deeplinks is to be preserved, then the deeplinks in each of the 16 categories need to be redone.

1. The Androscoggin subcategory is:

http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Counties/Androscoggin/

Within this category, the NACO listing is:

NACo: Androscoggin County

http://www.naco.org/counties/counties/county.cfm?id=23001 - This does not properly resolve. The new link should be: http://www.naco.org/Template.cfm?Section=Find_a_County&Template=/cffiles/counties/county.cfm&id=23001

2. The Aroostook subcategory is:

http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Maine/Counties/Aroostook/

Within this category, the NACO listing is:

Within this category, the NACO listing is:

That is half of them, and this is tiring. Before I do the rest, could someone please comment as to whether it is worthwhile for me to do so? Thanks!

Thanks again, I have dealt with the Regional ones, but cannot edit the Shopping tree, so will leave them for someone else.

Yes, please let us know if sites are not resolving, we can take them out from the live directory without deleting them, and check to see if they return.

As for format,

yes the site format is fine, but can you please stay with the way you provide the category in your first post

ie not Top: Shopping: Jewelry: Bead and Gemstone

but http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Jewelry/Bead_and_Gemstone

so we can click to the category :)

Thanks
