sugieb Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 How Do Sites Like This get Listed? http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Pets/Cats_and_Dogs/Clothing_and_Accessories/Dogs/ Daisy Dog Designs [EDIT] 404 / There is nothing offered on this site, I wonder how it got listed???
genius Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Real Estate France In http://www.resource-zone.com/forum/showthread.php?p=253054#post253054 it was suggested I should post a few examples over here so, 5 mins, later, in http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/France/Business_and_Economy/Real_Estate/ http://www.CasaLand.com portal no original content http://www.selecthomesinfrance.com/ portal no original content http://www.jbfrenchhouses.co.uk portal reworded descriptions but copies of real real estate agent's listings http://www.nokioo.com/fr/ no real estate in france for sale or if they have is very well hidden also link is to french language page best, Rob
genius Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 P.s. Add in http://www.adobesabroad.com to that list - portal eg "google search on ""This magnificent 650 sqm renovated stone "mas" is surrounded by 9 hectars of land located " comes up with real real estate agent Mercier while site page is http://www.abodesabroad.net/main.php?modul=detail&agent=1075&refno=108&l_action= picked at random from their "selection" surely it should be the Mercier agent who is listed and all the other little agents who make up their pages.
chaos127 Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 @sugieb: I would presume that at the time it was listed it had rather more content than it does at the moment. Looking at archive.org it was listed prior to October 2006, and had content as recently as July 2007.
genius Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 PPS. Add in http://www.real-estate-in-france.com/ Mistral in the same cat, no address, no business details, no card.
cnxtrans Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Listing in multiple categories If you do a search in dmoz, you would see http://www.linguaforce.com is listed in 8 categories. I thought a website could only be listed in one category.
gimmster Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 I thought a website could only be listed in one category. You thought wrong, although it's a common misconception. With few exceptions we ask that sites not be suggested to more than 1 category. However editors are free to list a site as many times as appropriate (within the guidelines) determined by the site content. Exceptions generally are Topical and Regional listings, as well as in each non-machine translated language equivalent category. This one seems to fit in the multiple language exception. Guidelines are at http://www.dmoz.org/guidelines/site-specific.html#multiple and http://www.dmoz.org/guidelines/site-specific.html#multi-lingual
stuartindigo Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 From this I take it that machine-translated sites (eg google translate tool used on site) would only be listed in the original language? [the guidelines do not specifically mention machine and manual translation] Stuart
gimmster Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 I take it that machine-translated sites (eg google translate tool used on site) would only be listed in the original language? Yes. Also any sites where the content is obviously machine translated - ie the content is done in such a poor manner as to make the site unreadable. If the reviewing editor can't even decipher what it is supposed to mean it has no chance. This doesn't mean that sites that are poorly translated by humans will always be declined either, but the majority of the content should be in a comprehensible form in the language in which it is being reviewed. Even native English speakers make idiomatic and grammatical mistakes which won't cause the site to be rejected out of hand. If it looks like it was translated from Spanish to English using a Spanish --> French and then a French --> English dictionary it is probably going to fail any review.

SullyIRL Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 The "Tramore" website listed here: http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Ireland/Waterford/Localities/Tramore/ Is now closed. Its remaining online for some odd reason, but there are no plans to update the site and the majority of information on the site is wrong or inaccurate. It causes a lot of confusion!
