Meta hutcheson Posted August 7, 2003 Meta Posted August 7, 2003 Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here Thanks for the report. It was listed (twice, as it turns out.) It is gone now. Note that during our server upgrades the public pages aren't showing the latest data, and of course search indexes update on their own schedule. The site may have other links to it, and may remain high in Google's index even after the ODP links are gone. So you may not see any difference for awhile yet. But at least our database is updated.

bobrat Posted August 8, 2003 Posted August 8, 2003 Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here Maybe you should work on your editor application - being detective is part of editing
AllyCat Posted August 8, 2003 Posted August 8, 2003 Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here I'm taking my time on my application - my first (and only) application, I didn't take enough time to perfect it and got declined - don't want to do that again!
Guest rankoutsider Posted August 9, 2003 Posted August 9, 2003 Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here ONLY Note the doorway page (recall seeing the same some six months ago and at quick glance just figured it to be a legitimate redirect) at http://directory.google.com/Top/Recreation/Pets/Fish_and_Aquaria/Freshwater/Species/Cichlids/African/?il=1 Specific URL: http://www.geocities.com/vatoelvis/ Needless to say, ODP description hardly fits the site in question.
totalxsive Posted August 9, 2003 Posted August 9, 2003 Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here Thanks. The site it points to was already listed in the parent category, so it has been deleted.

Guest webdoctor Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here I'm not sure if this really qualifies as "Abuse" but anyway... In http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Food/Drink/Wine/Winemaking/ I notice that "The Home Winemaker's Info Page" is listed twice. Once at http://www3.nf.sympatico.ca/phumber and again at http://home.thezone.net/~phumber/index.html (identical content on both sites...) Is this allowed? Webdoctor
Guest webdoctor Posted August 10, 2003 Posted August 10, 2003 Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here <sigh>...and another two from http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Food/Drink/Wine/Winemaking/ http://www.jessepearl.com/ is listed as "Wine maker recepies" but in reality redirects to a nasty-looking page featuring "Lowest price for .us .info .ws or .biz domain names" Similarly, http://handlez.org/ is listed as "Wine makers secrets" but redirects to the same page. old_crone Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here ONLY In this category, numaTek Web Design appears to no longer be a web design company. I only see web hosting and SEO services.
Guest rankoutsider Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here Thanks. The site it points to was already listed in the parent category, so it has been deleted. Otherwise, a doorway page would continue to be listed by the ODP? Did an ODP editor include a "site" that upon review shows no content but an entrance to another site (also included in the ODP)? Highly doubtful. That leaves only one viable alternative: The URL in question once held real content, which was then changed by its owner for the sole purpose of pointing it to (and therefore "link enriching" it in a highly questionable manner) another URL already included in the ODP. One of the preceding propositions must be true (again, assuming that nothing was amiss in the editor's review for inclusion of either), yet only one of the URLs will be deleted from the ODP? Since the ODP represents integrity if nothing else, why would only one site be deleted when clearly both sites have violated the spirit of the ODP? Put simply: What is the ODP's position on such issues? Thanks for your time; I realize you folks are volunteers.
brmehlman Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here I can think offhand of two other more innocent possible explanations. The site may have changed for reasons having nothing to do with our listing, or it may have been included by simple editorial mistake. Yes, we do sometimes make mistakes. If this was one, we appreciate your having called attention to it. If it's the site that changed, we appreciate your pointing out that the second listing was no longer appropriate. Thanks much for the help.

brmehlman Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here The banner says it's "Temporarily Not Available" so we've temporarily unlisted it and will watch for a comeback. Thanks for noticing it, things like this help us improve our directory.
Guest webdoctor Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Re: Hijacks & Other Content Changes - Report Here Thanks for noticing it, things like this help us improve our directory. Well, I'm still looking, so here's another couple: #1 http://www.bevnetwork.com/links.html is listed in http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Food/Drink/ but gives a 404 Page Not Found. Maybe the link is just broken, but from looking around www.bevnetwork.com it seems to me that the most of the content is only available to subscribers. Does a site like that deserve to be listed in http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Food/Drink/ ? #2 http://www.barshots.com/ ("Barshots Bar Guide") is also listed in http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Food/Drink but it's dead - in fact it is so dead there aren't even any DNS records for www.barshots.com ...
