Geona Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 Duplicate listings / Double slashes in URLs We have detected about 100.000 URLs that are listed twice or more times in the directory. In most cases the sites are listed in different categories. Should we post a list of these URLs or are these sites listed in multiple categories to make the directory more consistent ? In addition, we have a list of about 70 URLs, that have double slashes in the URLs ( e.g. http://www.netvalveusa.com// ). Should we post a list of these URLs ? OK. And here is an easy one: http://dbappbuilder.sf.net./Rel.html This is a bad URL, because it has an additional dot after the .net.
Meta hutcheson Posted August 9, 2004 Meta Posted August 9, 2004 (1) duplicate listings: no, we have this list provided for us regularly by another kind observer. (2) Bad URLs: yes, please.
Geona Posted August 9, 2004 Posted August 9, 2004 @hutcheson >(2) Bad URLs: yes, please. Do you mean the "Double slashes URLs" ?
oolala Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 Two same sites in one category I thought you might like to know that you have two sites in the same category that are operated by the same company. Please go here: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/India/Business_and_Economy/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/Web_Services/ Magna Infotech and Magna Seo. Both of these sites are connected to the same company, if you see the contact page you will find the same addresses too. I hope this information is helpful.
oolala Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 please check Hi there, i have found one site which is listed in two different categories with two different urls. Yoginet site listed in http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/India/Business_and_Economy/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/Web_Services/ category AND Yoginet site listed in http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/India/Business_and_Economy/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/ category. microcars Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 link changed to empty placeholder http://www.sentex.net/~dewood/ used to be what the description says, the content was changed to a Blank page with only html tags SEVERAL months ago. another link: http://www.sentex.net/~dewood/micro_north/ is a DEAD link, 404 and has been been for some time now. I suspect the person who owns this domain is a DMOZ editor, I reported this long ago and nothing has been done about it, so I applied to be an editor in that catagory and was promptly refused! There is a back-story behind this, but I won't post it here.
Guest wrathchild Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 It would help to have the categories that these URLs are in to find them faster. <added>Nevermind. It looks like both URLs were removed from the directory some time ago. The Public side of the directory takes some time to catch up.</added> I suspect the person who owns this domain is a DMOZ editor, I reported this long ago and nothing has been done about it, so I applied to be an editor in that catagory and was promptly refused! The one probably has nothing to do with another. If you suspect abuse and have some evidence to back it up, please file an abuse report. We take allegations of abuse very seriously and investigate them thoroughly. Otherwise, please keep your baseless accusations to yourself.

tony1284 Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 Invalid Link Category: http://www.dmoz.org/Health/Senses/Vision/ Listing: Optical Middle East - Optical trade show held at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Link: http://www.opticalmiddleeast.com I checked the link at dnsreport.com and it tells me it's down. It might be just a temporary thing, but I thought I would at least let you know that this may be something you want to keep your eye on. Thanks

Guest wrathchild Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 Unfortunately, we only have your word to go on this. While we don't list obviously illegal websites, we're also not lawyers. We're also not the Internet police. What you will need to do is pursue your own legal recourse against the maker of this product and those websites. If/when those sites no longer function or are deemed no longer useful enough to remain listed, then we will remove them from the directory.
Trugroovez Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 3 Listings Hi I recieved an email from this morming from a DMOZ admin after I sent a very polite email apologising for duplicate submissions of my site to more than one music catogory. And the Admin in question said; If you read the submittal policies, it won't say "select one category for every page of your site". It says ONE category for your SITE. Thus, the Chat and Sound Files submittals have been rejected, as they ought to have been and as you could have expected that they would be.. Although a site simler to mine below has 3 listings for the same site and I have been told this is against the rules. http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=anthems.com So how can 2 of my sites submissions be regected for submitting to different listings but there be sites that have had 3 listing for over 2 months or more? Ryan
robtrais Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 Links no longer exist The site http://www.cardplayer.com which is listed in Games/Gambling/Poker is also listed in the following subcats of Poker: a) Games: Gambling: Poker: Omaha Holdem b) Games: Gambling: Poker: Stud c) Games: Gambling: Poker: Online Cardrooms: Guides The problem is that the each listing only takes you to the cardplayer homepage. The site most likely has been updated and for that reason those listed links no longer lead to anything.

Actually, we contacted them about the issue directly long before. Their previous website does no longer exist. Until rencently, we ran across their new website http://www.deflash.net, still selling the ripper version of our software. We tried to find their contact info on the website but failed. If we manage to contact them, they may not give any response. So, currently, to stop the action, we have to resort to the help of the website who is listing DeFlash. We've contacted those websites listing DeFlash, most of them looked into the issue and was convinced that DeFlash is a ripper version of Sothink SWF Decompiler, and removed the listing from their websites. We know that you are busy working. But we really need your help to resovle the issue, as the majority of sites who linked Deflash are mirrors of Dmoz.org, seen from the search result of Yahoo or Google. If I reported the issue to the wrong place of the forum, would you please advise me who is responsible for it, or where is the right place to post it? Thanks! We really need your help. Best regards from China!!
Editall/Catmv arubin Posted August 12, 2004 Editall/Catmv Posted August 12, 2004 I am not really even a senior editor, but.... If DeFlash is a "ripper" version of your software, you might try filing a DMCA claim against the host of their website. It's not our policy to consider whether a site is a copyright violator. (I should add that I've published a site which I'm almost certain is a copyright violator, as it contains unattributed material which I know the actual author.)

We are not familiar with DMCA actually. If we decide to try filling a DMCA claim, where shall we start from? We know nothing about it. If you can advise us how to proceed, it is really appreciated. Thanks!
spectregunner Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 A Google search on DMCA yielded 961,000 results. Given that this forum is about ODP, rather than trademark enforcement, that might be a good place to start your search. The advice you received early on is still valid. This is a matter between you and the other website owner. It is not our place to get involved, and trying to enforce trademarks and copyrights is not something we can be doing.
