jeanmanco Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 Dealt with #1000, thanks. Re Internet Brothers - it might seem a bit odd, I grant you. As you will know there are thousands of photographs of Lake Tahoe on the Net. We can guess that most will be either 1. on a site about Lake Tahoe or some locality around it that doesn't just contain pictures, so if we list it, it will go in another category, not Maps and Images. (Your site is like this.) 2. on a travel/tourism site that covers many places, that could be listed elsewhere. 3. on a personal site with lots of other holiday snaps and family information, that we might list in a Personal Home Page category. 4. on a photographer's site, as part of a wider portfolio, that again might be listed elsewhere. So very few sites are likely to get listed under Maps and Images. A site simply of images of Lake Tahoe would fit there. So would a deep link to L.T. images from a site that is otherwise about something completely different.
Da_OW Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 Thank You Jean Manco. How did you find that Rockin Walt site. I thought I knew them all.
Boris Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Changed and Worse than dead links Forum: Top: Sports: Softball: Fastpitch: Teams: High School Andrean HS Softball link is now: http://www.andreansoftball.com/ The Gavit Softball link was shut down and the domain it resided on was bought. Visiting (please don't click if you are not going to remove from the Directory) the link: http://www.gavitsports.org/softball/ Is obviously NOT a softball site. A link to a form to report broken links on the directory pages would be useful. The most obvious contact link at the bottom of the page is actually an ad for supercrawler. Thank you.
jeanmanco Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 #1007 dealt with, thanks. The Gavit Softball link was removed from the Open Directory on 15/Jul/2004. It may still be visible on some of the directories that use our data and do not update frequently from us.

kimov Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 Cheers for the spammers? I found this web site to be the perfect example for spaming with hundreds of hidden keywords placed at the bottom of its index page in a grey rectangular: http://www.admo-tours.com . I also checked and it ranks No1 on in its category on all major search engines. How is that possible. I tought there are filters for such a brutal spam. It also has 4 multiple submissions in DMOZ. 1.Recreation: Motorcycles: Touring: Motorcycle Rentals and Tours 2.World: Deutsch: Freizeit: Motorrad: Reisen: Veranstalter 3.Regional: North America: United States: California: Travel and Tourism: Travel Services: Tour Operators 4.Recreation: Motorcycles: Touring: Motorcycle Rentals and Tours: Europe Cheers for the spammers. Do they feel at home in DMOZ
jeanmanco Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 #1010 - our rules are not the same as those of search engines. As it is impossible to spam a directory with hidden keywords, we don't usually pay any attention to them. However in certain circumstances we might be concerned. If the visible content was very different from the hidden content, we might conclude that the site was simply a front. For example a page about a children's game that has hidden links to casinos. That would be a clue to look closely at the content. Probably it is not worth listing. On admo-tours.com the hidden keywords are directly related to the business. If search engines are concerned about that kind of practice, then it is up to them to deal with it. Multiple listings are permitted in the Open Directory in certain cases. A site can be listed once in a topical category and once in a regional one, if it fits in both. If the site has versions in more than one language, it can be listed under each of its languages. Listing under Recreation: Motorcycles: Touring: Motorcycle Rentals and Tours AND Recreation: Motorcycles: Touring: Motorcycle Rentals and Tours: Europe would be inappropriate, but I cannot find a listing for this site under the latter.

maryando80 Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 abuse Dear Sirs, On http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Business_and_Economy/Immigration/ you have http://www.valuevisas.org/ that completly changed the site into poor forum and I do not think it should be listed in this category. Also http://www.immigrationassist.co.uk/ is no longer a website. They display hosting information. And http://www.workpermit.com/ is the same website with http://www.ukimmigration.com/ and same company. And also you have http://www.gherson.com/ who managed to introduce http://www.uk-immigration.net/ an inactive site I hope that helps! Regards, maryando80

kctipton Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 You should contact the Computers/ editors about this. This thread is not for suggested reorganizations of categories. http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/ has a list of editors. Contact them.
criticalpath Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 Hi kctipton, Another ODP editor suggested I post my list here in this thread. Please accept my apologies if it is not the correct place for it. There are some dead links/sites and inappropriate content in the list although a lot of it is just mis-categorized IMO. I can not contact any editors directly as I need to remain anonymous. I would appreciate it if any editor could forward the post (or a link to it) on my behalf. It would be a shame to let all that work go to waste.
Ken Posted March 6, 2005 Posted March 6, 2005 Hello All, I have noticed problems in the category months ago but was waiting until an editor stumbled upon them, but it has been months since it has been edited so here I am. http://www.dmoz.com/Games/Video_Games/Recreation/Browser_Based/Free_Gambling_Games/ As I am fully aware of the spam and deception in a category like this one, it would be difficult to find the energy to edit it. Hopefully, an editor will sacrafice a little time and patience to adding some more quality content to this category for your patrons. After I noticed these discrepancies, I applied myself to edit it as it had no editor and was a small category but was denied. My mistake for adding my own site, which offers much better content (over 70 free gambling games), but I digress. So now I am just trying to help out. As this category was last edited in December of 2003, Surely changes have been made to sites listed here. In my oppinion, the whole category needs editing but I will just mention the obvious errors. "Casino Games 42"(casinogames42.com) only lists affiliate casinos and has no use in this category as it doesn't supply any free games. Maybe should be moved to a more appropriate category. "Jacks or Better" (onlinecasino.com/fun/games/vidpoker/) supplies one Lo quality browser based game with an amazing 17 affiliate banners on that 1 page, not to mention impossible to < BACK out of the site without being bombarded by affiliate popups. There you have it, my 2 cents. I, as well as many others appreciate your time and will and do wait patiently for our review. Best...
