mirrors, dead links, wrong catagories, etc...

With all do respect to the editors, this category is grossly out-dated and has several violations of the guidelines. As I was once an editor in the very early days of ODP, I understand the challenges and appreciate the editors for the job they do.

I've been trying to get my web site RentersInc.com in here for close to a year and to see these web sites in here ... well it's just not right in my humble opinion.

The rent.com clones (affiliate sites) seem to be the biggest problem. If you search deep enough in these sites, you will always end up on rent.com.

Thank you for your consideration.

Dead link

Hi, I being trying to post my site in a certain category, I also read that in some categories it would take a few weeks to 3 years before an editor could view a request. That gives me plenty of time to help out a little, I found a dead link in the following category:

Shopping/Recreation/Guns/Accessories/Cabinets and Safes

Drake Safe Company-Sells Gun Safes

When you click on this link it takes you to http://gunsafe.freeservers.com

and it says "This website has moved, its new address is http://gunsafe.topcities.com/ "

ones you click on the new address it says:

Oops..... The page you are looking for cannot be found.

Thank you, Rick

Hi Alucard,

Another coincidence on the same category by the same company with the same mirrored site :)

Title: Car Hire Guide

URL: http://www.carhire-guide.gr/

Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Transportation/Car_Rentals/

Title: Rentacar-guide.gr

URL: http://www.rentacar-guide.gr/

Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Transportation/Car_Rentals/

Did this company try to abuse ODP and the anonymous surfer? yes IMO

Thank you to everyone who is helping! :)

#1364-1368, and #1373 were dealt with by another editor.

#1378 - site listings in regional and topical are mutually exclusive. The regional listing appears okay to me. We have decided that ferries.gr is the mirror (vanity url) and are using the Paleologos url since that is the name of the company from what we can tell. The ferries.gr listings are gone though.

#1386 - Tried to install an activex control on my computer and was blocked - is this what was being referred to? The site seems to load okay.

#1389 - Has been unreviewed by our linkchecker robot since time of posting

#1390 - done :)

STILL OUTSTANDING (From list in 1409 and subsequent additions)

Hi andysands,

I agree that Paleologos is the real owner of the domains. IMO the listing at http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Transportation/Maritime/Sea_Lines/Ferries/ should be removed since Paleologos is not a sea line or ferry company but a travel agency affiliated with http://www.forthcrs.gr. IMO that category is reserved for maritime companies that operate ferry boats.

Paleologos is a local travel agency in Heraklion of Crete island and its category should be http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Prefectures/Heraklion/Travel_and_Tourism/Travel_Services/Travel_Agents/

Hi glynos

re: #1412 - upon reviewing the site I agree with your reasoning - it does appear to be a local travel agency that is using ForthNet's electronic ferry booking service. I've relocated the site as suggested,

Thanks for all your hard work on investigating travel affiliate abuse, we'll get through the backlog in the end - sorry for the delay though, this stuff takes time to review.

Kind Regards,

Andy

More info, please.

Re: #1400 I have dealt with two of them. But I have a question about the third.

Could you please PM me with how you came to the conclusion that corfutoday and hotels-corfu.net are the same company? Apart from cross-linking, I need a little more evidence than that.

This one has taken me a long while to examine - I actually found a whole nest of sites that the hotels-corfu.net company owns and some were listed in the ODP. note the "were".

So please PM me the extra information so I can wrap up that item.

Thanks.

Title: Hellas Ferries

URL: http://www.hellasferries.gr/

Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Transportation/Maritime/Sea_Lines/Ferries/

Like paleologos.gr at #1378, this site is an affiliate of http://www.forthcrs.gr and not a maritime or ferry company. It is operated by the same company that operates the following site:

Title: Hellas Guide

URL: http://www.hellas-guide.com

Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Travel_and_Tourism/Travel_Guides/

Another question is whether both sites should be listed on ODP since information about ferries is related to travel.

The sites you mention from united hellas have been in odp for years and they link back to the index page by default if they are discontinued, others have moved up to having their own domain but have not benn updated in the directory. as for some of the descriptions of the sites listed they were done by odp editors, for example greek-hotels.com offers exactly what it states.I dont think it could be called "spammy" at all. I think you are being a little over zealous in your work. as for the company's area of work they are a web design & internet advertising agency.

Next time do a little more (correct) research when you try to discredit a company's reputation by labeling them spammers.

Hi htdawg, firstly some quick notes:

The sites you mention from united hellas have been in odp for years and they link back to the index page by default if they are discontinued, others have moved up to having their own domain but have not benn updated in the directory.

I thought so as well but this is NOT what I considered spam and you should already know that.

as for some of the descriptions of the sites listed they were done by odp editors, for example greek-hotels.com offers exactly what it states. I dont think it could be called "spammy" at all.

Site: Greek-Hotels.com

Description: Greek hotels, hotels apartments studios in greece, hotels in greek islands

You are an ODP editor and you din't find this description spammy? I have no further comment.

I think you are being a little over zealous in your work.

Maybe I am. The reason is that I cannot compete fairly with companies like United Hellas that abuse ODP. So I will keep being zealous in my effort to inform ODP of spammers like United Hellas. :)

as for the company's area of work they are a web design & internet advertising agency.

Do you know any web design company that does not offer internet advertising services as well?

If United Hellas' listing on the Advertising category is correct then all the web design agencies should be listed there as well.

Next time do a little more (correct) research when you try to discredit a company's reputation by labeling them spammers.

Next time explain why you didn't comment on all my other arguements that made me label United Hellas as spammer. They were the most important spammy actions, not the ones you described!

It's very disappointing that an ODP editor does not consider spammy and doesn't even comment on the following listings:

The same company has developed Greek-Hotels.com at http://www.greek-hotels.com/

A simple search on ODP at http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/sear...reek-hotels.com will give you easy-to-read results.

6 out of 8 listings are redirecting... and

Site: Greek-Hotels.com

Description: Greek hotels, hotels apartments studios in greece, hotels in greek islands

URL: http://www.greek-hotels.com/

Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Gre...Lodging_Guides/

&

Site: Hellenic Nationwide Hotel Directory

Description: Information about hotels, studios, villas, bungalows, suites, apartments, pensions and lodging in Greece.

URL: http://www.greek-hotels.com/welcome.html

Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Gre...Lodging_Guides/

and the above 2 listings - are on the SAME category as you can read above! Please note the descriptions of both listings and wonder if they look spammy as well.

------------------------

The same company has developed All Hotels in Greece at http://www.all-hotels-in-greece.com/

This site has "only" 2 listings on ODP at http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/sear...s-in-greece.com

The one is on the same category that the same company has 2 more listings (!) and the other is a deep link with no unique content, just simple hotel listings.

------------------------

The same company has developed 1hellas.com at http://www.1hellas.com/

This site has "only" one listing on ODP at http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/sear...rch=1hellas.com

Site: 1Hellas.com

URL: http://www.1hellas.com/

Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Gre.../Travel_Guides/

This is on the same category that the same company has one more listing!

Do you think that United Hellas didn't know ODP rules when submitted those listings?

FYI the following text is copied from their home page at http://www.united-online.net:

From this website you may find out about our services and how you can benefit from marketing your products through http://www.united-hellas.com, http://www.greek-hotels.com and http://www.all-hotels-in-greece.com.

These vortals (market specific web sites) are unique in their respective fields in that they offer ultra high visibility and placement in all major international search engines and indexing portals.

Next time I suggest that you don't try to prove that the earth is not moving. Sometimes doing some self-criticism is really useful.

Sincerely

Dimitris

PS1- I noticed that you are an existing ODP editor so I conclude you have some kind of relationship with United Hellas. It's not bad as long as you believe in a fair ODP without spammers and act accordingly.

PS2- What did you do as an ODP editor to inform other editors that most of the 93 listings of United Hellas were redirecting to other pages and didn't contain any valid content?

If I may interject! With do respect to you both, this doesn't seem to be the place to have a back and forth debate over the validity of a request rather the reporting of abuse and actions taken. Although I agree with much of what glynos63 is saying and agree that it is difficult to compete with companies with multiple OPD listings when you have one or none, I don't enjoy having to scan through all the conjecture to see if my request (#1401) has been delt with. IMHO, I think this debate would be better served if it is discussed elswhere or by PM.

...then again, I could be wrong ... I'll shut up now. :o

Thanks. :D

apartmentguy is correct. This is a forum for members to communicate to senior editors concerningthe possibility of abuse. We do not take action based upon reports; we investigate reports and take actions (or don't take actions) based upon the result of our investigations.

This is clearly not the pace for two members to engage in back-and-forth discussions as to the validity of reports. I ask that both of you cease from that type of behavior.
