jeanmanco Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 #1597 now dealt with, thanks. There was a replacement URL for Xie, Michael. [Note to editors: We now seem to be up to date, unless anyone wants to give a second opinion on #1594].
glynos63 Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 About #1594 I'm not sure that I agree with you. Mediterranean Traditional Mansions is a voluntary association. You are right, I missed this note . After further review of the site, I think the appropriate category for this domain is http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Regions/Mediterranean/Travel_and_Tourism/ as it provides lodging information about several Mediterranean countries, not only Greece. A quick look at the other two again suggests some ownership/control relationship with the properties. I am sorry but IMO the other 2 sites have definitely no ownership/control relationship with the properties. 1. http://www.moregreece.gr/ - On the left side of the home page it clearly says "You have a property to rent : Propose your house". 2. http://www.vacationresidencesingreece.com/ - This is a one-man site, by a travel professional as you can check at http://www.vacationresidencesingreece.com/knowus.html. Jeanmanco, many thanks for your ongoing valuable work here. It really helps ODP become better and better everyday.
glynos63 Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 dilos.com http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=dilos.com Dilos.com is a travel agent's site that has 18 deep links. Most of them are hotel listings (not official sites) that are redirected to newer pages and one-page "local guides". Title: Iraklion Archaeological Museum URL: http://www.dilos.com/region/crete/ir_mus.html Category: http://dmoz.org/Reference/Museums/Science/Archaeology/Greece/ The official page of the Archaeological Museum of Herakleion is http://www.culture.gr/2/21/211/21123m/e211wm01.html by the Greek Ministry of Culture.
Alucard Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 glynos - re dilos.com - can you find the official sites for the properties? We will always list those in prefence to an agent's site, if one exists. And please excuse me if this sounds ignorant, because I obviously don't live there, but I'm not seeing much evidence that the "Archaeological Museum of Herakleion" and the "Iraklion Archaeological Museum" are the same place. Both URLs are listed in the category, as I'm sure you have seen. I don't see an address on the second site (the dilos site) at all.
jeanmanco Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 #1603 - Since the official URL was already listed in that category, I have simply deleted the Dilos.com deep link. However the deep link was listed in another category, where I have changed the listing to the official site. Thanks. [Edited to add] Alucard - I checked the location. On Dilos.com the museum is listed under Herakleion. [Along top: You are in: Top → Europe → GREECE → Crete → HERAKLION → Heraklion → Iraklion Archaeological Museum] And if you look at the images from the collection, you see the famous Snake Goddess figurine. There can't be two different museums holding the most important collection of Minoan art.
glynos63 Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 About a "scientist" This is a special abuse case that I spent several hours on in the last two months. At #1385 I reported what I considered as travel spammer (nothing hard done on this yet) but IMO this is a "scientist" one. All the sites have unique content per ODP guidelines but this "scientist" is doing exactly what ODP considers ABUSE of the directory. As spectregunner posted on my thread about Multiple domain listings - Cutting your useful content in small pieces at http://resource-zone.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=39908: what you are describing is what we call directory abuse (among other names) and it is an excellent way to get none of the sites listed. Here are his listings, maybe there are more: Title: Athens Survival Guide URL: http://www.athensguide.com/ Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Prefectures/Attica/Athens/Guides_and_Directories/ Title: Greece 4 Kids URL: http://www.greece4kids.com/ Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Travel_and_Tourism/Travel_Guides/ Title: A Short History of Greece URL: http://www.ahistoryofgreece.com/ Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Society_and_Culture/History/ Title: Hotels of Greece URL: http://www.hotelsofgreece.com/ Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Lodging_Guides/ Title: Matt Barrett's Guide URL: http://www.greektravel.com/ Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Travel_and_Tourism/Travel_Guides/ Title: Lesvos: More Than Just Another Greek Island (great title ) URL: http://www.lesvos.com/ Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Prefectures/Lesvos/Travel_and_Tourism/Travel_Guides/ Title: Greek Food: A Complete Guide (great title ) URL: http://www.greecefoods.com/ Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Society_and_Culture/ Title: Barrett, Matt URL: http://www.mattbarrett.net/ Category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Greece/Society_and_Culture/Personal_Pages/ Title: Greece for the Physically Disabled URL: http://www.greecetravel.com/handicapped Category: http://dmoz.org/Society/Disabled/Travel/Specific_Places/Europe/ Title: Dolphin Hellas Cruise Page URL: http://www.greecetravel.com/cruise Category: http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Travel/Specialty_Travel/Cruises/Consolidators/ He is affiliated with Dolphin Hellas http://www.dolphin-hellas.gr/. I hope that ODP editors take some action soon. Thank you Dimitris
Meta hutcheson Posted October 11, 2005 Meta Posted October 11, 2005 I don't live there either, but this time I've read a book or two on the subject, and I believe glynos is right--it's just two transliterations of the same city. And, in the presence of the official site, the dilos entry really doesn't have enough information to merit a listing, IMO -- as noted, there isn't even an address. <added>looks like another archaeology editor agreed with me. The dilos page is gone. Thanks again for all your careful work.</added>
glynos63 Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 And please excuse me if this sounds ignorant, because I obviously don't live there, but I'm not seeing much evidence that the "Archaeological Museum of Herakleion" and the "Iraklion Archaeological Museum" are the same place. Both URLs are listed in the category, as I'm sure you have seen. I don't see an address on the second site (the dilos site) at all. Hi Alucard, I thought you do live in Greece You are very right to have this question. The city is called "Iraklion" in Greek language (it's the largest city of Crete island and the 3rd larger of Greece) but it's used to be written "Heraklion" or "Herakleion" in English ("ion" and "eion" are called the same in Greek). The reason is that Greek names have many ways that can be written in English. jeanmanco is right. There is only one archaeological museum there owned by the state of Greece. BTW I invite you to refresh your Greek transliterations thank you hutcheson

Editall/Catmv arubin Posted October 11, 2005 Editall/Catmv Posted October 11, 2005 In regard 1610 and 1611 -- we allow news aggregators, provided that the article selection they provide are helpful -- at the very least, better than a news.google.com search on the keyword.
dvh Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 #1484 and #1493 are done. Thanks Regarding #1493, I see that "islam-101" has disappeared, but http://www.judaism-101.org/ still appears in category http://www.dmoz.org/Society/Religio...Judaism/Family/ which still shows a last-edited date in December 2004. Is this a function of a delay in updating public pages, or is that site really going to stay in that category?
dvh Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 1542 is done In category http://dmoz.org/Health/Addictions/S...n_and_Training/ I am confused. I can see that there was a recent edit and the site in German was removed. And maybe the software site belongs there. But the site that includes another site's content without attribution is still there, which seems to fly in the face of the ODP's interest in original content. I am not trying to be argumentative, and I don't have any personal stake in Intoximeters. I am actually trying to understand this.
Meta hutcheson Posted October 12, 2005 Meta Posted October 12, 2005 "Other content appears to be original." I'm guessing the editor saw it the same way. Notes: (1) The rule isn't "must not have any non-original content" but "must have significant unique content." (2) Unique is not original, and original is not unique, but there is a relationship. (3) The definition of "significant" is an editorial judgment, and we tend to lean over backwards in favor of sites, at least until we figure out we're being abused. (4) "Cheesy" isn't an issue, and "commercial" may or may not be, depending on the category. (This category is perhaps "semi-commercial".) I haven't reviewed the site again: in a collaborative community, though, you tend to accept each other's judgment unless there's a really good reason not to. But you're welcome to make your case for "really good reason why this content isn't significant" or "really good reason why this site should be considered as 'primarily intended as an ad banner farm driving traffic to other commercial companies or sites.'" What do you think?
Meta Artisands Posted October 12, 2005 Meta Posted October 12, 2005 dvh, Regarding "islam-101": your post here led to a number of related sites (thank you) and I did inadvertently overlook the islam-101 listing. That has now been corrected. Regarding “mcphersontrainingconcepts.com”: the Drink Wheel is clearly “credited” to Intoximeters, Inc. The lack of specific attribution requirements should probably be reported directly to Intoximeters, Inc. Thank again for your help Curlie Meta editor artisands CurlieCrew
dvh Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 Thanks for your helpful replies! I'm looking forward to joining the editing community and being on the receiving end of all this second-guessing.
jeanmanco Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 #1609 dealt with, thanks. #1610 - Removed. Agree that this was just a Moreover feed. #1611 - Removed. As stated above, we do list news aggregators, but I see a problem with this particular one. It may be just a temporary problem, but several of the stories did not relate to Greece (or only in a tangential way.)
jeanmanco Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 #1606 looks like a complex picture. I have just looked at the three deeplinks that you mentioned. The first two I have changed. In the third case the content is on bird-watching, whereas the site you suggested as an alternative is the Lesbian Wildlife Hospital, which is listed in http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Outdoors/Wildlife/Rehabilitation . That made me realise that the Aegean Wildlife Hospital also belongs in the Rehabilitation category, though both could have Regional listings as well, which I have now given them.
riz Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Wisconsin/Localities/L/La_Crosse/Weather/ Why does this category exist? All the websites are national. If these site can be listed in this local subcategory, shouldn’t all of these be listed in each and every local subcategory?

riz Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 Empty subcategories Category: /www.dmoz.com/Regional/North_America/United_States/Wisconsin/Localities/T/Tomah/Society_and_Culture/ Was this subcategory created for the sake of creating a new subcategory? It was last edited in January of this year. I am speculating that there were resources listed here that no longer exist. What happens in this case? Does the subcategory lives on forever, without any need or want for it?
